We booked a late deal and we were pleasantly surprised. The apartments are a bit dated but very clean. Located close to both Los Gigantes centre and also close to what seems to be the more upmarket Puerto de Santiago.

The pool area is clean and peaceful.

The staff are very helpful and any issues we had were resolved immediately.

If you are looking for a cheap break that is somewhere clean I can recommend this place.

Please be aware the whole area is hilly.

Resort - decent enough, typical Canaries really. Pretty quiet, not much character. A few bars and restaurants, but quality not great. Would recommend El Pescador, only decent place to eat. The beach is tiny and volcanic ash for sand, so not the best. It was always deserted.

Accomodation- very clean. The rooms were suprisingly spacious with a decent kitchen and bathroom. No air conditioning, which was fine in April but probably a real problem in the summer. Pool is small but functional, gardens immaculate, staff very friendly. Pool bar didn't open tilll mid day, which may be a seasonal thing, but didn't bother us either way.

The only real down side was the beds. Very, very old divans with splaying legs on castors and as hard as rock. They really need to change them.

All in all, for a couple looking to kick back, no frills, have a few beers and enjoy the sun, a good choice. Too quiet for families. Less mobile of us might struggle with the steep (ish) inclines. We would go back ( particularly if they changed the beds!!!)

Just back from a week staying in El Sombrero. I chose the accommodation after reading mainly positive reviews on Trip Advisor but I have to say I finished my holiday with mixed feelings about my choice.

Firstly the positives: The rooms are generously proportioned. I booked a studio and it had a separate kitchen, dining and living area with more than enough room for 2-4 people. Our room also had a large balcony over-looking the village and the sea. The apartment was really clean and was tidied and our towels changed daily. The location of El Sombrero is also really convenient as it is not up a large hill (as a lot of accommodation in Los Gigantes is) and it is directly alongside the bus stop with regular buses to other resorts in the area. The staff were also particularly friendly and helpful.

However, as mentioned by another reviewer, there was a lack of hot water for the entire week. I was only staying with one other person (my daughter) but there was not even enough to last two showers every day. We also had ants regularly running over the sink in the bathroom which was a bit off-putting. There was also only one power socket in the kitchen which meant that you could only boil the kettle or put on the toaster but not both at once (which may sound a bit petty but was actually really aggravating by the end of the week!). The beach is NOT within walking distance - although their are regular buses which run to the nearest one (at Playa del Arena), very cheaply.

But my main issues are with the pool area. Firstly the pool is small and for the week we were there, two families with children were also staying. This meant that when they were in the pool playing and splashing (as they are allowed to do - they are also on holiday!) there was no room for anyone who just wanted to swim quietly or read a book at the side. Also, as the loungers are really near the pool, those people nearest ended up getting regularly splashed.
There are not enough loungers (and this is only April!). I found myself having to get up at 8 every morning to run down to put towels on loungers before they were all taken. Also, the staff do not monitor the pool area, so despite the fact that there were signs saying loungers were not to be empty for more than two hours, some lay with towels on for 5 or 6 hours before their owners appeared - incredibly annoying (and rude!)
Finally, although the loungers do have cushions on them, the head-rests do not move, so they are very difficult to read on unless you are lucky enough to be one of the people on the loungers by the back fence who is able to use that to lean against.

As I said, a mixed experience. I think that El Sombrero could be a lot better with a bit of an investment, but it isn't terrible. At the moment you really do get what you pay for.

Room Tip: Get the loungers nearest the fence early!!

Booked last minute after hearing good reports of resort from friends, and it didn't disappoint. Apartment very spacious, clean and well equipped and well serviced. Brilliant view from balcony of sunset and Gomera, and mountains. Gardens very well kept - everything looked freshly painted and clean.
Much quieter than the main resorts like Playa las americas etc.
Found steps down from pool to back gate entrance opposite main bus stop, and near to Chinese restaurant where we had a lovely meal with excellent service.
Only snag was the short steep climb to walk back up to the apartments - we managed, but it puffed us out and would be difficult for some people.
Best meal at Pescador, and also brilliant view from the Tamara near to marina, and most other places were good. Miranda pricey and very slow to serve, but it was nice. Spent most time at the Oasis public swimming pool area - where there were nice pools and amusements for children - there were plenty of seats to sit and soak up the wonderful views or watch the activity down at the marina or waves on the rocks (or sunbeds to hire) - lovely gardens and nice restaurant good value.

Room Tip: Upper floor apartments probably have best views.

We stayed for two weeks in the El sombrero Apartments (studio room 23) in Los Gigantes on the last two weeks of February with Sunset (Thomas Cook) Holidays.

See our full trip report on the Tenerife Forum here on TA.

Welcomed and escorted to apartment by friendly and efficient man.
Very pleased with the apartment with sea view, separate kitchen (and bathroom) which we didn’t use as we eat out all the time just doing simple breakfast.
Every thing you could want if you did want to cook including a full size modern touch operated electric cooker and hob. A toaster and kettle were also in the kitchen.
We had a safety deposit box which was in fact a floor standing safe almost big enough to hold a bankers bonus! The TV was on top but we didn’t hire this.
The apartments are in a good location without any significant hill to climb. Any rooms that open on to the swimming pool or surround has its own gate so safe for kids.
The water is heated by electricity so no shortage. It is though very, very hot so care is needed especially with children. Plenty of storage space but coat hangers a bit limited.
All the staff are very helpful and friendly. We had a problem with the safe (it needed a new stand-by battery) but it was fixed within minutes. Particular mention has to go to Suzanne who runs the pool side snack bar. She is a great source of information and will even help you with your Spanish. She also keeps a few trays of books for swapping. There is a table tennis table, pool table and kid’s pool in the swimming pool area. The rooms are cleaned by excellent maids 5 days a week and bed linen changed once a week. Two tea towels are provided and are changed with the bed linen.
You have two keys one for the apartment and one for the side gate reached by going down the steps from the corner of the swimming pool. This gate is supposed to be locked between 1pm and 7am the next day but it seemed a bit hit and miss so always have your key with you. Just outside this gate is the bus stops and left up the hill (steep till you get fit) where you will find the best supermarket the Transito. Don’t bother to get water from here as for about 2cents more you can get large bottles from reception so saves the carrying.
You can get English newspapers in lots of shops but we used the Country Garden that was mainly a fruit and veg. shop (with English owners) because it is close to the apartments and the papers arrived before 8.30 in the morning so able to read about the bad weather back in the UK whilst having breakfast in shorts on the balcony. In the evening sit with a drink, watch the spectacular sun sets and try and decide where and what you are going to eat.
We would definitely return to these apartments.

Just returned from a week in the Sombrero and wanted to leave a review because I found them helpfull prior to booking.
The apartments are very clean, spacious and most have a nice view. The location is perfect for Los Gigantes and its only a short walk to the bars and restaurants. The pool area and sunloungers are perfect, with a nice size pool and cushions on the loungers. The snack bar not only serves cold beers in frozen glasses (beautifull), but lovely food as well, the lady that runs it is very considerate and provides a very friendly service with a smile.
The resort is just perfect for a quiet family holiday, as there are about 20 or so bars and resturants that cater for people who don't want "Big Daves fun pub 1 euro a pint" type places!!
I was slightly hesitant before going as some of the reviews criticsised the rooms decor etc, I can honestly say they are lovely, I can only think the people who wrote anything negative must have thought they had booked into a 5 star hotel - these are exactly as sold - nice, spacious, clean apartments in a good location.
I could'nt reccomend them enough - spot on.

El Sombrero apartments are very good value. Spotlessly clean, roomy, excellent location. A microwave and a coffee maker would be good additions to the kitchen but all the basics are there. They are in a good location with shops and restaurants very close by. Recomended are Simple Simon's 2 minutes into the centre for breakfast croissants and good sandwiches. Eating out is reasonable and we loved La Mariposa restaurant. Los Gigantes has a stunning setting and is peaceful and friendly. Also enjoyed a trek with Han's who organises daily easy walks in the area.
