“Worthy Of No1 Hotel In Es Castell”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2012

Just returned from a 7 night Half-Board stay at the Rey Carlos III and this Hotel is worthy in it's position of No1 Hotel in Es Castell. Our first impression of the Hotel was it looked out of place with it's brightly painted frontage in a small backstreet but that all changed once you entered your room. Recently refurbished in a minimalistic monochrome style with a good size bathroom, plenty of toiletries, hairdryer and large shower suitable for 2 (yes we did try). And...the fantastic view overlooking the sea not just from your room but also the restaurant. We took the easy option of HB but it's easy to see that people who chose B&B could go out and about for a lot of choice of various restaurants, which we did manage to eat lunch at. The staff were friendly with a special mention for Miguel and Estelle at reception and the waiters and waitresses. Breakfast was buffet style, fruit, cereals, fry ups and pastries. Evening meal again buffet style was somedays a little repetitive but it was the last week of season. However I managed to eat differently each night. I would recommend eating out for lunch. There are some good restaurants in Cales Fonts, most built into the wallsof the small harbour. Would recommend anywhereto eat here but we really liked the Nautica, on top of the harbour, a great set menu for 18 euros which includes a bottle of wine. Public Transport is reasonably priced. Plenty of places to visit from Mahon and from the Hotel a 2 minute walk to the boat to the "Isla Del Rey" or Hospital Island a great 2 hour visit of this historical building being rebuilt by volunteers. A drink and snack included for any contribution. All in all a great holiday and already a planned visit back.

I have just come back from the lovely island of Menorca where i stayed at the Hotel Rey CarlosIII on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast was a buffet style service, extensive in choice and would easily feed all tastes and appetites.
The hotel was charming, stylish with a modern theme running throughout.
Most of the rooms open to balconies with sea or pool views.
There are flat-panel televisions with satellite channels and complimentary wireless Internet access, not that we spent much time in the room or surfing the web.
I feel that one of the greatest pleasures of travel is taking in gorgeous scenery not normally encountered in daily life and you can experience this by just gazeing at the flotilla of different sailing ships that pass the hotel waterside view. You will see anything from the humble fishing boat to the large millionaires yachts.
If chatting with friends over a drink is a favourite pastime then the hotel has a magnificant large terrace to do just this.
The hotel is also situated in a fantastic location approximately 1 mile from the island capital Mahon for those walkers amongst us, where you can rub shoulders with all those millionaires on their super yachts and experience all things nautical.
If you want to find something more traditional just 5 minutes along the charming menorcan streets you will be able to eat amazing tapas.
There is a tapas bar called "La Zurra" a short walk from the hotel which serves the most stupendously fantastic array of tapas i have ever had. The place was a hive of activity at all times of the day and night inhabited by both, local menorcans and many of the hotel guests. A very welcoming place to eat and drink.
If you feel you want to explore a little further, then 10 minutes walk will place you in a charming tiny port of cala fonts.
This little port has the most charming bars and restaurants and is a really lovely place to just sit and watch the world go by. You can have a simple dish of the day or a more fine dining experience if required, the choice is excellent. You can also catch a water taxi from here to Mahon.
Over all, the island of Menorca is an ideal retreat for people yearning to relax and as always live the dream.
I

We stayed from 9 - 16 September in this hotel , situated in a quiet location in the small pleasant town of Es Castell about a mile from the capital Mahon. The whole hotel has apparently been totally re-furbished this year. The food: enormous choices - almost obscene! Although they do have to cater for all tastes, I suppose. Small criticism - why, in all this luxury, and in a country growing oranges, was there no fresh orange juice for breakfast?

Our room faced west with a good sized balcony and overlooked the harbour and was very comfortable and quiet. The staff were pleasant and helpful. We found this a good base for walking, although with temperatures between 27 and 30 degrees, still a little warm. Having come from a week in Majorca, Minorca was fairly flat by comparison, and thus not such grandeur in the laandscape, but still very pleasant.

We stayed here early september. Room 115. it was lovely. We had a good view of both the pool area and the harbour looking across to La Mola....the sun coming up in the morning was a beautiful sight.
Our room wasn't ready when we arrived but this was not a problem, we had books in our hand luggage and the bar served us a complimentary, deliciously cold Spanish beer to sip while we waited....in the end, we barely looked at our books as the view from the area outside the bar was so gorgous.....Rey carlos is practically in the harbour.
We chose the bed and breakfast option so we weren't tied to the hotel fo meals, this meant we were able to eat out every night. The very substantial breakfast buffet kept us going until the early afternoon and then locally purchased bread, cheese and tomatoes filled the gap until dinner when we ate along Cales Fonts, choosing somewhere different most nights.
The cleaners kept the room nicely and the recipe card daily was a lovely touch as was the towel provided especially for use around the pool
We both used the little gym and I ran in the mornings before breakfast (more on breakfast later) up the main road towards Sant Esteve and back along the seafront as the sun came up and then swam in the pool afterwards which, contrary to other reviewers I didn't find at all cold.
Breakfast was fantastic:- cheeses, meats, breads, fruits, fish, hot options of eggs and sausages, mushrooms and tomatoed cooked in different ways, omelettes cooked in front of you and the usual cereals etc....and the most sublime offering of pastries of every kind....Menorcan specialities of ensaimadas and courgette cocas and...well if you are reading this you have either been there and tried it or are going there and will try it, so bon appetite!
The main aim for my husband and myself for this holiday was relaxation so we didn't plan trips out like we usually do, just took each day as it came. We went over to La Mola via the Water taxi from Cales Fonts, this was a fascinating place that needs about two and a half to three hours to see it properly.
On a sunday there is a free boat trip to Isla Del Rey (Hospital Island) run by a team of conservationists who are renovating the place and they run guided trips round the old hospital there followed by a traditional Menorcan breakfast, this was a fascinating trip although there wasn't enough time to walk around the island itself as we would have liked to. They just ask for a donation towards the upkeep of the place.
We walked to Mahon and back along the clifftop footpaths, visited the local military museum and walked to Trepuco to view the ancient monuments.
All in all this was a lovely holiday in a beautifully situated hotel.
However, there were a couple of things that I feel needed some attention. On the one day our room didn't get cleaned the coffee sachets didn't get replenished so my husband went down to reception to ask if we could have a couple more....possibly due to a slight language barrier reception directed him to the bar and they charged him 1€ each per sachet, I feel that more than the daily allowance of two sachets per room would have been more useful.
The huge table in the hotel entrance was stuffed with leaflets of local tourist attractions, it was only on the very last day we noticed a folder on the reception desk (the side nearest the bar) with some useful local information which, had we had access to it earlier might have proved useful as, on the first day, we walked out to go and see Fort Marlborough which we found was closed for refurbishment...in actual fact it was such a lovely walk and Sant Esteve is so lovely it hardly mattered. We also walked out to Castille san Felippe during the opening hours shown on their leaflet and found it closed.
It was fiesta time in Mahon while we were there but you wouldn't have known it from the hotel as there was nothing on the information table to say what was on or what time it was happening (perhaps it was in the useful folder that nobody told about)!
All the time we were there, especially on sunday, I was envious of the local family who swam in the sea from the bathing platform just down some steps from the back of the hotel...until I saw a previous review on this site, I had no idea that it wasn't, as I had thought, a private "beach" for this family but available for all...to have had this explained in the welcome would have been nice as there were times I just wanted to jump in!!
I have to say though, these niggles did not, in any way spoil the stay in this hotel at all. I would definately return.

Visited this hotel in late August early Sept booked a Suite and a sea view. The Suites have a Jacuzzi on the balcony (Jawdropping) spacious, clean and the sea view of Mahon Harbour is breathtaking. Service is really good they cant do enough for you, the drinks and food are very reasonably priced and the staff are friendly. The Hotels location (10m from Mahon) 8Euros in a taxi is another plus. There is a small harbour with many restaurants just 10m walk away where you can enjoy the boats bobbing on the water while enjoying your meal, several of them cook freshly caught fish, fantastic! Well worth a visit but would recommend a Suite!

Room Tip: A Suite with a sea view or just a room with a sea view a must!

Have been to Menorca many times and in particular Es castell but this was the first time with my boyfriend so I wanted him to love the Island as much as I do which he certainly did. We were so pleased with the hotel, our room had a sea/pool view which in my opinion enhanced the holiday. Reception staff were friendly and helpful particularly the senior lady receptionist (sorry can't remember her name!). The hotel guests are mainly couples of 40 + so the hotel has a calm relaxed atmosphere and no annoying kids running around. In fact the resort is probably more suited to adults as there is no beach for children to play on. We were half board but there is a small supermarket near hotel for drinks etc, shame about the miserable woman on the till who made you feel like she was doing you a favour serving you! It is so easy to get around, you can walk to Mahon for the more active but the bus stops on the main road and goes every half hour. If you do go to Mahon go early or in the evening as most of the shops close for siesta. We wanted a car for a couple of days and were delighted to find a small car hire place called 'es castell autos' who were really cheap and efficient. Lastly I must mention the food and will agree with other reviewers it was excellent for most people but being Coeliac I found my selection repetitive. The staff were able to tell me what was'nt suitable but offerred no alternatives so at breakfast no cereal, no toast and at dinner no cakes or desserts and I got accidentally glutenised on a couple of occassions, when will hotels realise Coeliacs holiday too!!!!

Room Tip: "Ask for sea/pool view"
