Duquesa Village

This is a lovely complex which hugs Duquesa Golf Course and looks down towards Estepona Bay. The apartments are spacious and well equipped with ac, heating, dishwashers, washing machines, spa jacuzzi baths and big terraces. The pools are great and have changing rooms, toilets and sun loungers and the large bottom pool has a life guard during the summer season. There is also a paddle tennis court. Use of a car is needed while staying here because whilst it's an easy ten /fifteen minute walk down to the port / beach or a five minute drive it's quite steep and would be hard to walk up in the heat of the day or to bring groceries! There are loads of nice places to eat and visit nearby and beautiful countryside views. We come several times a year and have done for eight years now.

We have been back to Duquesa on many occasions over the last 10 years and absolutely fell in love with this magical place.

If you are looking for a non stop 24/7 resort then this may not be for you, but if you want wonderful beaches, peaceful surroundings and enough bars and restaurants to eat somewhere different each night of your stay then this is a great choice.

The marina is a 10 minute walk downhill where you will find fantastic blue flag beaches and a great choice of waterside restaurants, bars and shops. In the summer months there is a craft market around the marina, lovely for a stroll round after a nice meal.

The complex itself is very relaxing with fantastic golf and sea views.

The apartments are very spacious and well appointed with jacuzzi baths and dishwasher etc.

We especially enjoy sitting out at night looking across the bay towards Marbella and Puerto Banus.

Children will love the 5 pools and they are varying in size so suitable for all age groups. The changing and toilet facilities at each pool are also very good.

We always rent a car as there are so many places locally to explore and it is great to be able to park under the complex and take the lift up to the front door of the apartment.

We would recommend this location to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday in a fantastic location.

Room Tip: 2nd floor apartments have great views and a lovely large terrace.....

On first visiting Duquesa Village we were struck by the welcoming feel of the place, and the sweeping views down to the sea. If you are looking for a busy seaside resort, this might not be your first choice, but if you prefer a quieter location, beautiful gardens, a choice of 5 sparkling swimming pools offering free sunbeds, gorgeous well appointed apartments, air conditioning and pleasing architecture then look no further. There is also a paddle tennis court for the energetic, and numerous golf courses, within a short distance. The apartments on this large complex are all cleverly constructed to gain maximum benefit from sunshine and views, and all possess generous balconies so that you can take in huge gulps of the wonderfully fresh air and relax. Dining Alfresco is a must here. We were amazed by the wild birds that flew past us on our balcony including owls and we think, an eagle, certainly a variety of hawks, so bring binoculars if you are a keen observer of wildlife. We were even rewarded on a drive out in the countryside by the spectacle of many of nesting storks! A rare sight indeed, and one that had us reaching for our cameras.

To give that feeling of being completely safe, there is 24 hour security at this gated complex, and secure underground parking. The complex is positioned a way back from the main marina area, and it takes about 15 minutes to walk down the hill to the beach where you will find wonderful beach bar restaurants serving the freshest local cuisine. Shops banks, bars and Restaurants can also be found in the main Marina Area. Unless you are fit, you might want to take a short taxi ride back especially in the heat of the day, or in the evening after a meal out. Many of the visitors we have spoken with had come back every year to Duquesa Village, and its easy to see why. We will be joining them as often as we can, that is a promise.

Room Tip: The apartments on higher floors have better seaviews.

We visit Duquesa Village about four times a year. It's beautiful, peaceful, spacious and with lovely pools and gardens. It is a hike up the hill from the port and beach (5 minute car ride but hard going walking back up in the heat). We love it though and enjoy looking out over the golf course and down to the sea. We also walk through the vineyards and past the farms into Manilva and find the locals lovely. They often give us grapes, oranges, avocados etc en route and one lady let my daughter have a ride in their cute and very fussed over donkey. This is not a destination for someone who wants an easy package and walking distance to a busy resort but it is a good option for those wanting to experience a bit more of Spain from a Spanish perspective. The apartments are spacious and well equipped and its really a home from home.

Recently stayed at a friend's apartment in Duquesa Village overlooking the golf course. Lovely views right down to the med along the course which were ever changing depending on the time of day or night, and so peaceful. The golf course itself is a wonderful natural haven for birds, including owls. The apartment is a really high spec - beautiful marble floors throughout and marble walls in the bathrooms and the kitchen has everything you need, including dishwasher, washing machine and drier. It was also very convenient having the underground car park and the lift. The grounds of the Village are well maintained with many and varied colourful flowers and shrubs. There are many quality places to eat and drink nearby which are easily accessible but you do need a car. Loved Duquesa port for drinks, Castillo de Duquesa, Sabinillas and Estepona where there are some lovely fish restaurants. Would recommend Taberna de Lucia 3 in Estepona port, la Sal on Casares beach and a bit further afield on the Casares road Venta Garcia for the menu del dia at 12.50. The beaches all along the coast are great, whether or not you go towards Gibraltar or Estepona and the pool at the apartment was immense, great for a morning work out. Looking forward to our next holiday there as it has everything we could want.

I will start this review by stating that when we booked this accommodation, it was in error, we confused where we booked with where we really wanted to go. Having said that we asked several questions of the property owner that indicated we were confused, but these “elements” were missed. As an example we asked if the apartment was ‘near the games room’, no response to that question, probably as there isn’t a games room in the location we booked in error.

We booked an apartment with Gaynor Slater/Winfield (not quite sure which name she uses, mails are in one name and UK bank account in another and her agent tells us that she lives in France) and the transaction itself was painless.

On arrival and having established our error we requested directions to the apartment, we were met at the bottom of the hill – what a hill! The journey up the steep, rutted, pot-holed road was not encouraging, but we eventually arrived, tyres intact, at the furthest corner of the development. The apartment itself was well appointed, a good size, well equipped and furnished; in another location we would have been delighted. The views from the balcony had been described as having”beautiful views over the mountains and sea”. As can be seen from the photos, the mountain is perhaps more of a scrubland hill and the sea views also encompass a non-functioning building site and 4 cranes. After establishing that a 20 minute downhill walk (probably 30 minutes or more uphill) to the nearest shop/bar was not for us, together with being in an estate of abandoned/empty apartments, we spoke with Gaynor Slater/Winfield’s agent to find alternative accommodation, as a pool with no children and no activity was completely the opposite of what we were looking for. We later worked out that the apartments with the sun blinds up were totally empty and with blinds down were owned or abandoned, this put the level of occupancy at about 10%. This is where the reference “It is Legend” comes from - it was as if we were on the set of the film “I am Legend”; abandoned buildings, weed filled balconies, electricity that had been “hot-wired” to buildings, low levels of maintenance and roads that were unfinished.

Duquesa Village is north of the main road that separates the lively part of Marina Duquesa from the many apartments that have been built on the hill, as one agent described them to us “a testament to Spanish greed”. Many of the small houses at the bottom of the hill are for sale and judging by the flat tyres and dust on some of the cars, many of the flats had not been visited for some time. Across the road (the sea side of the road) there are many restaurants, a lively community, the roads are flat and it is possible to walk without worrying about steep unmade roads and you certainly feel safe even when it is dark.

We managed to find an apartment in Marina Duquesa at an additional cost of 1000€ (which evidences how unhappy we were at Duquesa Village), and whilst not as well equipped, not as big and not as comfortable as the apartment in Duquesa Village there was no possibility of us returning to Duquesa Village ever!

As a final insult Gaynor Slater/Winfield deducted a ‘relocation fee’ from our security deposit without either prior advice or an invoice. Our error there was asking Gaynor Slater/Winfield’s agent if he knew anywhere vacant, or any rental agents we could talk to, we certainly did not ask him to work on our behalf. We have yet to receive any response to our many mails and calls.
