“Lovely week in the sun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at this hotel. I travelled with my husband, our 19 year old son & his friend, our daughter & her partner.First impressions when we arrived was wow! The reception was stunning. It was huge with loads of plants hanging from the balconys above with comfy sofas. There were stairs leading down to the next floor, and a bridge over some water. this was where the restaurant and entertainment lounge were situated. Everything was marble.
Rooms - These were spacious with comfortable beds. The bathroom was huge with a walk in shower and a bath and a bidet. We asked for a sea view or pool view and got both which was lovely. The hairdryer was rubbish though.
Pool - There are 2 pools separated by a bridge, a snack bar and a self service system for beer and soft drinks. The sunbeds were squashed in and the unbrellas were all mouldy so maybe some new ones next year are on the cards. One pool though was very cold.
Food - Well I have had far better and would rate it at 7/10. Porridge was watery and tasteless, some of the soups were thin and tasteless. Some of the food was luke warm and a little sloppy but anything from the grill including the fish was very nice. There was always enough wine for lunch or dinner. The best themed evening though was the Mexican. But considering what we paid, (£600 pp) it was ok.
Entertainment - There were some good shows especially the acrobats , comedy Michael Jackson and the magician but all typical for a 4* hotel in Tenerife.
Drinks - We drink gin & tonic which was always served perfectly. The red wine was chilled so I drank the white instead. The other members had all sorts of drinks including cocktails and were all served properly
Staff - We found them on the whole very friendly although there were just a couple who were a bit miserable.
beach - This was just accross the road from back of hotel. It was small with black sand but no water sports. There was a lifeguard as well
Resort - Ok for us as it was quiet with a few bars, restaurants, supermarkets and a medical centre but for our son & his friend, they had to go to Las Americas for one night for the party scene.
Weather - We had fantastic weather, up to 30 deg. and sunny so what more could you ask for
All in all a good break.
Would I go back? - Yes, not for a main holiday though but for a weeks Autumn/winter break as this one was for us.

Room Tip: I would go for a pool/sea view on a low floor

After a 30-40 minute transfer we arrived at what is a stunningly presented hotel, the reception is really something, and literally everywhere is mabel! We were checked in very swiftly and were given a room with an absolutely beautiful mountain/sea view. The room was spacious including the bathroom which consisted of bath/shower, shower cubicle, beday and of course toilet. The beds were comfortable and bedding was changed regularly.

The food was a little disappointing, very repetitive and the theme nights were just a slight alteration to one dish and that was it. Restaurant service could of been better too, a smile goes a long way! And just one drink was given upon sitting down with no offer for refill or self serve.

We must say though the complex was spotless thoughout and the adults only pool was very quite and relaxing considering it seems so close to the childrens area, so its an ideal hotel for couples as well as families.

The beach is just to the front of the hotel, its a black beach, really something different, and also spotless. There is also a selection of local restaurants, shops and a supermarket. The area is a rather quite so if your looking for night life with a buzz this is not the place and more suited to people looking for a quieter more relaxing holiday.

For days out theres a local bus service, Los Cristianos is well worth visiting (1Hr 30Mins Away) , it has some stunning beaches and a great shopping centre, we also visited Loro Parque which is solely just worth visiting Tenerife for, it was really something and also Siam Park which was an adrenaline rush! The bus service is very cheap, just 7-8 euros a person return for most journeys!

Overall a nice holiday, fantastic weather and some great days out.

Room Tip: Ask for a Mountain/Sea View. We stayed in approx room number 532?

First impressions of the hotel when approaching from the road was that its huge and looks a bit old. However, upon entering the reception area all bad thoughts disappeared. The whole area is beautifully kept with plants hanging down from the balconies above. It is spotlessly clean and has large comfy sofas and armchairs.

When we checked in there were two people in front of us who were already booked into the hotel. The "gentleman" in front of me (British) proceeded to be very rude to the receptionist, complaining that he had no clean towels in his room and going on and on and on ....... When he'd finally finished his ranting the receptionist, who was very polite and friendly, checked us into our room.

After a couple of days at the hotel, we returned to our room one afternoon to find we had no towels. We saw the maid in the corridor and mentioned it to her - she checked the list she had on her trolley and we saw she had written down that our room needed towels, so she had it in hand. A shame some people don't have any patience !

The room was lovely - on the fifth floor with a full sea and pool view. We had a huge bed with a table and two chairs. The TV picked up English channels. The bathroom had a full bath with shower over, and a separate shower unit. Our room was cleaned daily and fresh towels provided whenever we put the used ones in the bath. Our sheets were changed 3 times in the 9 nights we were there. The room was spotlessly clean.

The restaurant was very large and the food was absolutely fine. It wasn't cold at all (only the salad) and there was a good selection at all meal times. Some were better than others but on the whole it was good. I think i'm quite fussy about my food and I can honestly say there was always something to eat. The themed nights were OK - I don't understand why people have said that all the food was the same, just a different flag on show??? On Oriental night there was chinest style food, on Indian - curries, etc - also there was a carvery and fresh fish cooked every night. I seriously think if people want better than this then they should think about going to a 5* resort. Breakfast was fantastic. So many different breads to choose from, cereal, cold meat, cheese, yoghurt, fresh fruit, bacon, sausages, cooked tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns, freshly cooked fried eggs, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs - omlettes cookes to order. I will say that occasionally the coffee cups and juice glasses ran out but clean ones were soon available. Some of the juice machines were better than others and the toasters were rubbish - but that seems to be the norm in holiday hotels.

At lunch and dinner drinks were served by the waiters.

The tables were cleared and re-laid quickly and efficiently.

Breakfast was served from 7.30 - 10.30; lunch 12 - 3pm and dinner 7 - 10pm. Between times snacks were available at the pool bar - so no need to go hungry.

The pool bar also had soft drinks, slushes, beer and water on tap with other drinks available over the bar.

We had no problem at all with sun beds. We usually took our towels down before breakfast (around 9am) and then went straight out after breakfast. There were usually beds available throughout the day.

The entertainment was, at best, OK. The featured act started at around 10pm. The Beatles tribute act was very good as was the ABBA tribute act. The singer who appeared nearly every night was far better when she stuck with Spanish songs.

The resort itself doesn't have an awful lot to offer just the normal touristy type shops, bars and a few restaurants. I would thoroughly recommend Juan Lanas which is just around the corner from the Hotel and is fantastic.

A few tips:

1. Get a car from the airport unless you enjoy very long coach trips and being the last to be dropped off. Some people we met were on the coach for 3 hours by the time they waited for the Manchester flight to arrive and then dropped everyone else off on the way. Our trip in the car took 35 minutes and the hotel is so easy to find. We hired our car from Plus Car and I cannot recommend them enough. They met us at the airport with the car and we returned it to the airport. They don't ask for a credit card either and offer full insurance and no extra cost for one additional driver. You return the car with the same amount of petrol as it had when you collected it - so no hidden charges.

2. Check out the difference between half board and all inclusive before you book. There was an offer of upgrading from HB to AI for 10 euros pppn.

3. There was also an offer to upgrade from a standard room to a sea/pool view for 6 euros a night (per room)

4. The wine, sangria and cava is much nicer in the restaurant than in the bars

Obviously everyone has their own opinion of a good holiday. For us this was a really good holiday. We had no complaints at all and would recommend to any of our friends and family and will definitely return ourselves.

Room Tip: High floor with sea/pool view

The hotel was clean and tidy. However I would not state that it is a 4 star hotel and won't return. The hotel staff were rude and did not go out of there way to make your stay pleasant. There is only one main restaurant which serves the same food day after day and you have to queue to get in. The waiter offers you one drink when you still down and doesn't bother coming back again as obviously want you out of the restaurant. There are two main pools and both do not allow inflatables, which when you have young children is not good at all. They want to splash about and have fun, however the lifeguards ensure this doesn't happen !! There entertainment was limited and I would state that it is not a family hotel at all. I would not return again.

We stayed at this hotel for the first week of the school October holidays. We are a family of 4 with kids aged 5 & 11 and we all had a smashing holiday. I agree with the comments from other reviewers to ignore the bad reviews - some people must be extremely hard to please! I found all the staff helpful and polite (although I do believe if you treat others pleasantly and with respect you will get the same back). The travel time from aiport to hotel took just over an hour. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to be told that we had two interconnecting rooms. This was a bonus as we had only booked one family room. The rooms were on the road-side but on the 5th floor so we still had a sea-view and views of the mountains. In actual fact, we were hardly in our rooms anyway as we were always busy enjoying the facilities in the hotel.
I had read the reviews from summer time and expected to have trouble getting a sunbed, however I reckon the hotel is less busy in October and this was not a problem.
My husband used the gym every day (except Sunday when it was closed). He did have to pay 5 euros each day for this but said the facilities were good.
My five year old made friends quickly and was happy playing in and around the pool all day. The flume is open 12-2pm and 3-5pm and she spent the whole time going up and down that. The pool attendant asked her name on the first day and referred to her by name after that. The kids are able to help themselves to 4 flavours of slush and a variety of soft drinks, as well as tubs of ice cream. The beer is self serve and go can go to the bar for wine, cava, sangria and spirits. (Try the lime slush with gin - lovely. I also enjoyed a glass of cava with my lunch).
Food is available pretty much all day. Breakfast from 7.30 till 10am (the fresh made omelette station is great). Pool bar is open 10 - 6pm and has chips, hot dogs, burgers constantly available, as well as a buffet with soups, salads, paella, pizza, fruit and cakes from 1-3pm. Evening meal is self-serve and although not 5 star the food is plentiful and if you don't enjoy something, just choose something else!
Kids club has a soft play area and craft activities and my daughter went there every afternoon for a couple of hours, although her highlight was being able to leave us at dinner for the kids disco each night which ran 8.30 till 9.30 whilst we went up for a quiet drink in the piano bar.
OK, so the entertainment is not fantastic but take it with a pinch of salt (and a cocktail) and enjoy. The Beatles tribute band were good.
Overall, we had a lovely break and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor room - avoids ants, noise and gives a better chance of a view.

Just been to Playa La Arena (oct 14-21, 2012), with my 2 kids, (11 and 9). Great hotel, definitely worth its 4 star status, fantastic lobby area, hugely impressive, all inclusive food and drink options were good with plenty of choice for kids and most nights themed (Latin American nights etc). You could also eat during the day in the poolside bar/restaraunt which was relaxed enough that you could pad about in your swimmers and not need to put a shirt on top of suncream (eeeuuuchhh). As well as the pool bar the all inclusive peeps could help themselves to soft drinks, slush's and beer (Mahou) Swimming pools were very clean and safe with a couple of lifegaurds on duty, usual issues with sunbeds being "claimed" before breakfast but I still managed to get decent beds despite not coming down till 9:30 ish. There is a water slide which is open for a couple of hours twice a day and the kids all seamed to like the lifegaurds operating it. (they knew which ones would let them go down in pairs).
Local area has a nice beach (didn't use it as its the usual black ash sand of tenerife) and was less than a minutes walk from the back gate of the pool complex. There are shops and bars just along the beachfront as well (nice irish bar "The Blarney Stone" well worth popping into).
Rooms cleaned every day with fresh towels every 2nd day. There was an option to upgrade room to pool/sea view for a fee. We had a sea view and it was stunning.
Evening entertainment pretty good from 9 till 12, there was a mini disco for kids from 8 ish. Tennis court, bouls, soft play, table tennis and mini golf all available, some free, some with a very small charge.
One or two things worth mentioning, men need to wear trousers for evening meal, not a problem if you pack them (I didn't). The "heated" pool, it was supposedly 40 deg outside yet the water temp would have suited penguins and polar bears rather than humans. Also, on the pool subject, don't be fooled into buying inflatables for the kids, they are not allowed in the 2 main pools despite selling them in the hotel shop. You can, however, use them in the toddlers pool but it's only 1 inch deep. The staff on reception were pretty typical and all appeared to be very efficient and busy and only found one lady to be overly sour.
Would go back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Best to go for a pool view, sounds obvious but some rooms will just look out onto a rather uninspiri...
