We stayed at the playa la Arena in September. On arrival (9pm) we were told by the receptionist to drop our bags into the luggage area and go get some food and drink and book in when we were sorted. We were then shown to our room which overlooked the pool and sea, the room was large and clean. We had fresh towels everyday if we wanted and you could get a towel for the pool (10€ refundable deposit).we found plenty of empty beds after 9 am as the pool didn't open till 8; but that didn't stop you from an early swim if you wanted. Back to the food. Full English if you wanted every morning; plus fresh fruit, yogurt cheese etc. and fresh made omelettes. Lunchtime was varied and hot. The evening meal was very good, every night was a different theme with a wide range to choose from. For the "Brits" abroad there was pizza, burgers and chips in plentiful supply. The pool bar was clean and served hot food and too; as well as cold drinks and beer. We made booze puppys ( white rum and pineapple slush mixed (lush). On our departure we had to be out of the room by 12 but as we wasn't leaving till 6pm we booked a courtesy room for 3pm which was free of charge. To our delight it was an empty cleaned guest room we we had for 30 mins.Overall we had a great holiday.

After being at this hotel in 2010 we were looking forward to going back. However it has since been bought and unfortunatley they do not have the same standard. The holel still looks impressive when you arrive. But a few little things have changed, the pool area is not as clean, and only plastic plates & cutlery. The entertainment is not up to much although there was a tribute band on the Monday nights which were ok. The food in the main restaurant is a disappointment, very repetative and sometimes cold. The staff were ok, but could maybe smile a bit more! On the upside the rooms were cleaned dailly. Spotless!
But I wouldn't go back.

First view of hotel is impressive, when you enter it has a wow factor. Marble floors immaculately clean, foliage hanging from balconies. Rooms quite large, we paid for a sea view and drinks upgrade, dont bother. Most rooms had a sea view of some sort, drinks choice pathetic. Pool area top class, clean, well laid out, plenty of sunbeds, bar for all kinds of drinks and snacks. Restaurant lets everything down, needs makeover badly, food mostly tepid, not a great choice in fact 3 star at best. Evening entertainment pathetic. We booked for 3 nights it was enough. Shame because potential is there.

I have reviewed this hotel on many occassions, as we have been holidaying there for the past twelve years, but I am sorry to say this time I must admit the food has definitely gone down, also the maintenance of the hotel - this I am sure is due to the number of people being there - this being due to it being an all inclusive - and attracting more families.
I still cannot fault the staff, I think they are extremely friendly - if you treat them properly they treat you fairly.
I must say this hotel is in bad need of a revamp tho' we have been going for over 12 years now and as far as I can remember this has not been decorated and it shows in the carpets, and the stains on the walls in the bedrooms, but this doesn't alter the fact that the rooms are kept very clean, and I can't fault the housekeeping.
This would not stop me re visiting the hotel in the future - so come on Belive lets see if you can improve on these things.

Room Tip: go for a high floor lovely views.

Pool- lovely if not to busy. Weekends seems to be super busy! The reserving of sunbeds, annoying but you could always get a sunbed. We have a 3 yr old and had a life jacket floaty for her which was great. The pool was fairly deep (for her) so this meant she could safely play in the pool all day. There are rules about blow up floaties in the pool, so don't bother buying one from their shop!
Pool Bar- the food was really not good. Chips were fine. So for lunch we recommend eating inside the hotel. By far the best meal of the day was at lunch time. The drinks by the pool and ice cream are great.
Hotel Rooms- so clean can not fault.
Hotel- really nice and looks amazing inside.
The bracelet all inclusive system- do not upgrade to premium drinks. A complete rip off. I wasn't allowed anything I wanted. Just Smirnoff and Baccardi. Everyone was complaining about this, they really need to change it.
Entertainment- Kiddies disco was awesome and the shows were ok. Nothing really wonderful but kept us entertained a few nights.
Reception staff- I read how awful they are so was pleasantly surprised. The issue here is they speak Spanish and have many Spanish speaking guests. So possibly can come across rude but I have no doubt Spanish people would feel the same in an English hotel!
Food- ok very samey. Kinda what you expect. Lots of German options but I imagine the Germans weren't impressed either. Ice cream and deserts were nice. I ate soup most nights with Sangria. Can't complain to much. We did eat out a few nights just for a change and a steak!
The resort- really quiet nice little town. Not for young people wanting to party but great for couples and families wanting quiet time. When you come down from the lift to the main road, do a right and the first pub on the right does a great sandwich and very cheap drinks. Also if you like sport, a great place to catch a game!
The beach- well it's black sand so when it's hot the sand is like fire under your flip flops. And after paying 9 euros for two sun beds and an umbrella, we tortured ourselves to stay there as long as possible. You can't swim as the current is to strong, yet I did see crazy people doing it. And the worst bit is the black sand covers your body and stays with you. I probably still have some on me now! All that said, it's very beautiful and when there it's worth going for an evening walk on the beach.
The locals- very friendly. We took a taxi from the airport for 50 euros which was 30 minute drive. Our taxi driver was lovely and told us all about the island. We did speak to people who took a transfer and they were on coaches for over an hour and a half. Get a taxi it's worth the money! There are loads waiting as you come out of the airport. No need to book. Very easy.
All in all really nice holiday and just what we needed. Food could have been a bit better but for the money it was ok. Personally I would only go back if we got another cheap deal.

Room Tip: We did pool and sea view. Was lovely! We spoke to people who looked out over the road so pay the ext...
