We stayed at the hotel between the 5th and 12th of January 2011.
On arrival we were met by 2 girls at the reception who seemed quite nice but one spoke better english than the other, which is relevant later in the review.
They gave us our keys/cards and checked us in and after drawing a route guide on our hotel map left us too it.
We had arrived late 9.30pm and were hungry and needed to get our suitcases and bags into our rooms before the dining hall closed, but did not realise the size of the complex and were soon lost.
We were getting frustrated and annoyed but when we spoke to a member of staff he went and got another female member of staff and she showed us to our rooms.
The hotel is massive and immaculate, we had some food and my wife went to bed as she unfortunatly was coming down with the flu.
I returned to the reception and asked Carolina, about the spa as i was interested in getting my wife pampered the next day like a steam room and massage to try and make her feel better. Carolina didn't seem to understand me very well, and her english wasn't all that great as i was trying to explain my wifes condition.
I had the tamerity to ask if i would be better off speaking to the other girl as she spoke better english. I recieved a barrage of spanish rant which i knew wasn't very nice which ended in the spanish words meaning im the son of a Who*e
Followed in english with, I speak very good english sir and understand every word you say, said in a very sarcastic manner.
I was furious and had to control myself from retaliating in my own broad Scottish accent, which she wouldn't have understood but would have got the message. (i now wish i had).
But as we had just arrived, i didn't, but if it had been on the last day she would have got an earful back. Trust me.
I would have loved to have understood her spanish better but i was told she called me a son of a who*e.
A bit extreme for daring to say her english wasn't as good as her friends. I could have complained but i wasn't going to let a very silly and immature member of staff ruin my holiday.
So Carolina, grow up, and learn to speak better english and i hope your boss reads this and gives you a rant.
Apart from that everything was great, the food we always found something nice.
Poolside help yourself, cold beer on tap, also the same with slushes wines even sangria. we couldnt fault this hotel, huge bed rooms and sitting rooms, 32"tvs in both.
Bathrooms with shower, bath, b-day. It was spottless.
Balcony with a sea view, You can go down to the smaller pool at the other end of the hotel which is more quiet, no music, for a late breakfast. And even get the cooks to toast your ham and cheese sandwich.
We went down the hill to the beach only the 2 times as my wife wasn't very well. There is a nice irish pub where you can watch all the football etc. We wanted a layed back quiet holiday where we could relax, and because of the time of year it was perfect.
So apart from Carolina, and having been to hotels all over the world this all inclusive hotel is the best ive ever been in. And that was agreed by the other couple who go on hols with us everywhere. If you have children it is perfect, being a new hotel, it is only a few years old.
So apart from the very sad, bad Carolina, everything was perfect apart from my poor wife's flu.
It's was tremendous value at £500 per head, we would def go back and will.

Been all inclusive for years, so far this one is ace, could not fault anything. Read what you want but dont judge until you've tried it "everyones different" The only downside was the wife had nothing to moan about which made it A VERY ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY..............STE WIDNES.

stayed here in January with my wife had a very relaxing break. It was good value for the price paid. The sad thing for this hotel is it has all the ingredients to be a top class property if used correctly. The quality of staff and the ammenities are all in place to make this 5 star. So what lets it down well the food could be better during your stay you are allowed to visit the "Ala Carte" up to three times on and each seperate night it is run as a different theme (grill night, seafood night, Italian night) to be brutal the food in this area is poor. Ala Carte it is not. The staff in this area also dont understand what it takes to up their game from the main restaurant. The pools were too cold.
But overall i think the positives out way any negatives and i would stay here again.

Just returned from 1 week at this hotel, and loved it. We (my daughter aged 22 and myself aged 60) just needed a week in the sun. sitting by a pool, reading, and generally "chilling out". This hotel was great for this. The room, as others have said, was great - enormous, 2 tvs! fridge restocked daily, bathroom with bath and shower - all spotless, plus a very large balcony. considering that we only spent half an hour in the room morning and evening getting dressed, etc. I cannot understand why anyone could possibly ever criticise anything to do with the room! First Class
I would, however feel slightly more critical of the dining area.......The selection of food is wide - but it does become a little repetitive after a few days - fine for a week, but more than that would have been monotonous - however, there is always some beautifully cooked pork or turkey or other joint each evening, it is the selection of vegetables which becomes monotonous - and this, because the food is somewhat mass-produced. The hotel is catering for large numbers of people, and it is inevitable that it will become rather "canteen-like"......but what bothered me and my daughter more, was the noise and the lack of ambience in the dining-room......It is a real dilemma....how does a hotel cater for people with young children? They cannot be blamed for making noise really - but when one is eating at 9.0pm it is not to be expected that the dining room will have lots of very tired kiddies making noise......
The dining room is so large that it is lacking in any atmosphere, and we were frequently seated near to where the staff were stacking dishes, emptying plates, etc and this is not conducive to a relaxing eating experience.
The lunches - served in a smaller restaurant were first-class. Enormous choice, fewer people eating at once and better atmosphere.
The pools were too cold for me to swim in!!!! Not a big problem - I was more than happy to sit on the side with my book.....very few people seemed to be brave enough to swim.
The evening entertainment was pretty awful! Except the Beetles tribute and the Eagles tribute band.....and the Jazz singer in the piano bar. We preferred to sit on the Terrace with a cocktail or two and "people-watch" - it is very relaxing!
Overall, we had a thoroughly relaxing week and loved it. The staff were great - we learned that the male staff mixed better cocktails and Irish coffees than the female staff! The Spa (free trip) was really lovely, and we were given a ticket for two-for-one after our initial free visit (ie 2 people for 22 euros) - but the weather was so good that we did not think that we wanted to be indoors, so declined.
As others have said, there is not a great deal to do outside of the hotel, in the immediate vicinity, and it is very hilly. Some people hired cars, or went on the (expensive) trips. I would really recommend this place for a good-value, relaxing break to the sun.
I was interested to meet people doing long weekends - using the Fly-be (or similar) flights, and booking the hotel on-line.....they reckoned that it worked out cheaper than package holidays......I would certainly consider this myself next time.....4 hour flight is quite lengthy for a long weekend, but, it is such an easy flight......and worth it say, to have from Friday to Tuesday in the sun, Champagne for breakfast, wall to wall sunshine........cor, only been home 3 hours and missing it already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We stayed with our 8 year on the 31st Dec til 7th Jan and had a great holiday.
Was quite shocked to read some of the reviews for the same period as our stay.

The hotel is kept very clean, gardens well maintained and the pool and surrounding areas spotless.
The room was one of the best we have ever stayed in,( and we have stayed in a lot!) and again was spotless, cleaned every day, with fresh towels, and mini bar kept stocked.

The staff were very pleasant, polite and helpful, given they were run off their feet during the busy festive period. We found all the reception staff to be the same, no complaints there.

The food was plentiful and varied, something to suit all tastes. The new year eve gala dinner was fantastic with caviar, cava, lobster, loads of great food.

There are some negative points, as with most holidays, such as
on occasion the restuarants were very busy and it was a struggle to get a coffee or tea first thing in the morning, but this is down to timing.
There is a heated pool but only one half of the activity pool, the quiet pool was fairly fresh but did get used.
If you want luxury service you would need to spend a luxury price.
This complex delivers exactly what it says in its adverts.
We would recommend this hotel to others, and have already.

We booked with clear blue seas, and they delivered everything they said they would, down to specific block of rooms, free late departure, welcome bottle of cava. Definately recommend them too!!

Firstly, be careful when reading reviews on here, some are about Hotel Los Gigantes, Not Hotel Luaby Costa Los Gigantes, This is not a Thomson Gold Hotel, the other one is.
Stayed at Luaby from 11th January to 18th January 2011. The wife and I were very impressed with this hotel from start to finish. This was our 7th time visiting Tenerife in January, staying at various hotels, along with holidays recently to Turkey and Mexico, this hotel is in our top 5.

On arrival we were met by a happy helpful receptionist, check in was quick, as they scan your passport, so not a lot of form filling. We were taken to our room by a golf cart, the room was great, a nice big bathroom, big living area with a double sofa bed and large tv with many english chanels, including, BBC 1, ITV 1 and cbbc. and Sky sports 1 The bedroom was big with a queen sized bed and another tv. The view was superb with a view straight out over the main pool to the sea and La Gomera.

The hotel is huge, with a lot of steps and slopes, some of the bars and restaurants weren't open, due to the time of year. However we never had to queue for even toast in the morning, the waiters/waitresses were very attentive, clearing tables and bringing drinks etc.. The food was varied, hot and often cooked in front of you, from fried eggs at breakfast to steak at dinner. Always plenty of vegatbles as well.

The bar staff at the various bars and snack bar were very efficient nd spoke very good english, again, although some bars were closed, there was never much of a wait to be served.

The daytime entertainment was the same as most hotels, waterpolo, shooting etc. but also a mini/crazy golf circuit and a bowling alley where they had competitions. evening entertainment was again similar to most hotels, but here you did have a choice, most evenings, having a singer in the piano bar, or the main act of dancers etc. in the main hall.

Although the hotel is very large, I think there were enough sun beds and parasols to cope with the hotel being full and as already mentioned, other bars and restaurants to be opened in height of season, it should cope.

The only slight downside to this hotel, is it's location, it is only 500 metres from nearest beach and a few shops, but down a very steep hill, which after a day on the beach having to either push a buggy up or carry todllers could be difficult, this might be a problem, when this hotel becomes a First Choice holiday village in the summer. there are 3 areas of shops, none with a huge number, but you have the closest ones in Player La arena, going out the back of hotel, then out the front about 800 metres away is Puerto Santiago and about a mile away is the main shopping area of Los Gigantes.

In summary,Staff very good, rooms very good, comunial areas very good, entertainment good, location could be a problem.

Desperate to get away from the grey weather we booked this hotel for some affordable winter sun. This is the first time we have gone all inclusive but we bagged a fantastic deal with Direct Holidays. The suite certainly rivalled any five star accomodation we have stayed in and was kept spotlessly clean. Food was fine, the a la carte particularly good and the spread on Christmas day was awesome. All of the staff were brilliant, friendly and helpful with the exception of one member of staff on reception. However, we soon figured this out and the other reception staff were great. A great thing about this hotel is the size of the complex and it is possible to avoid all of the activites and have a chill out time without getting hassled. Spent a lot of time at the Spa which was excellent. Only cloud on the horizon was my son getting a severe stomach bug on Christmas day. We are reluctant to blame the hotel as we know that bugs were going around schools prior to Christmas and he made so many friends he could easily have picked it up from another child. Paid 70 euros for a doctor to visit - well worth the money - he prescribed medicine that worked in a few hours. Wish our GP was that on the ball but perhaps this is what you get when you pay. All in all an excellent holiday and would encourage others to go. Having said that we would avoid going in summer, one of the lifefguards said it is chaotic around the pool and would certainly think twice about going when it is a First Choice Holiday Village. For us the great thing was to be able to have a peaceful and relaxing time.
