“Fantastic for a family break”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

Just returned from a fabulous week. This was a first all-inclusive family holiday experience and the hotel and its wonderful staff made this a great one, despite the dodgy weather!
The rooms are fantastic, good size, spotlessly clean, and being a suite, meant that I didn't have to go to bed at the same time as my 18 month daughter. The TVs also showed CBeebies, which was great for some down time for her.
The food for the week was good, there was a large choice. We had 2 nights in the themed restaurant, the Mexican was better than the Grill, but it was nice to sit down and be served. The staff in the restaurants worked really hard, tables were turned around so quickly, we never had to wait long for a drinks order, and they always appeared with a highchair, whilst we were trying to spot one. They were extremely good with our daughter and always had time to say hello and make a fuss of her, or find her a glass of milk.
Even though my daughter was too young for alot of the games etc, she was perfectly happy with the soft play areas both indoors and out, and loved the mini disco.
As a novice to this type of holiday - am not put off!

Room Tip: F322 was great!

The location of the hotel isn't ideal- up a hill, not on the beachfront (although only a short walk to the nearest sandy cove) and on the main road, but the hotel more than makes up for it! More of a holiday village, the complex is ENORMOUS! Rooms are beautifully furnished and really clean- I do worry about cleanliness but no complaints at all on that front! Only downside to the rooms are the baths - they take the best part of an hour to run as water pressure is shocking!! Snack bar and restaurants serve a great variety for both fussy eaters and big eaters alike, and staff go out of their way to make the stay as enjoyable as possible - particularly the main restaurant staff who were really lovely. The pools were a good temperature and great for the kids, although - as usual - poolside flooring was a bit slippery and we saw a couple of little accidents as a result... Entertainment was good quality and the drinks (not what you're used to as they're the unbranded, foreign versions) are served in huge measures! Overall I wouldn't hesitate to go back, incredibly picturesque and definitely a trip to remember!

This was the first trip to Tenerife for my wife and me. It was also our first experience of an all-inclusive hotel. From the moment you arrive at the front door there is a feeling of this being a high-class establishment.

On checking-in we were advised of a problem with our room allocation, despite the fact we had booked 10 months ago. Looking at a number of reviews this seems to have happened to other people during the same period. However, we were given a number of options, which included a pro-rata refund of cash or upgrade of our all-inclusive package with a guaranteed sea view room after 2 nights (D Block).

It could be said that it was difficult to make a decision without seeing the room(s) but having opted to make the change of rooms the transition was handled very smoothly. We were glad that we chose to move having initially being allocated a ground floor room in K Block, near the main pool, that offered little privacy.

The grounds of the hotel are beautifully maintained as are the main buildings, bars and restaurants.

As part of a ten night stay we were allocated three themed meals at a different restaurant on the complex. These meals were served efficiently although if you were to be fussy some things were not as described - eg Warm Chocolate Brownie was cold. The Mexican and Italian nights were particularly good.

The food in the main all-inclusive restaurant was excellent. A very wide and varied choice of hot and cold food with a themed section to the buffet each evening. Even the most difficult person to please would find it difficult to complain at what was on offer. Queuing was kept to a minimum and in the main the staff were very prompt at clearing tables. It was occasionally difficult to get around the buffet. This situation may have been eased if children hadn't been allowed to go to the buffet unsupervised.

Visiting at the end of November we were surprised at the number of children staying at the hotel. You should be aware that this is a very child friendly hotel and whilst it was no real problem to us I am sure that some people would have been put off by this.

This issue was particularly noticeable around the pools. The main pool area was especially noisy, loud music and lots of children. The smaller pool area was somewhat quieter in this respect. Towels for the pools are allocated on a 15 euro deposit basis and can be exchanged every two days, but only between certain times. I felt that this process was a bit restrictive and could be problematic for some people.

A minor complaint would be that guests are expected to pay to use a room safe - only 2.5 euros per day but nevertheless in my opinion a hotel of this standing ought to consider reducing or removing this charge.

One additional extra on offer was the daily coach to Los Christianos. At a return cost of 4 euros per person this was a significant saving on the local bus service and much quicker, The coach leaves at 10.00 and returns at 17.30. You have to pre-book this at the Reception desk.

In summary overall, this hotel offers an excellent all-inclusive experience. As always if you look hard enough you can find fault, but in the main this was a very enjoyable stay for us.

The Management and Staff of the hotel deserve a great deal of credit for the way they run and organise a very busy operation at the Costa Los Gigantes.

I am writing this review to try and inform future holidayers based upon our individual circumstances of our first holiday to this hotel. I will break it down into a list of plus points and points that i feel could be improved. Hope this helps you in deciding whether or not the hotel is for you or not!
First of all let me tell you who went. Me and my wife in our early 40's, our son who is 7 and my wife's father in his early 70's
We went to the hotel during the week of 22nd nov to 29th nov

1 The hotel was spotless throughout from entrance into the reception down to all eating areas and pool side areas and the entertainment areas.
2 The apartment rooms are constructed into blocks and were very clean
3 i can only comment on the block that we stayed in (A block) but it was clean, quiet and the rooms are spacious and modern. We had 2 tvs in the apartment with a decent bathroom. Plenty of clothes storage space too.
4 A block was fantastic with a balcony as all have but the views overlooking the atlantic and the island of la gomera were brilliant and a nice start/end to the day
5 The restaurants were all very clean, well presented food with a very good variety of meat, fish vegetables, breads, pastas potatoes and was a real focus for our stay and something to look forward to each day and night. There was a quieter snack bar with quick food on offer such as pizza, pasta, chips, nuggets, sausages and a bbq cooking chicken kebabs and paellas.
6 All bars had self service areas for drinks such as red/white/rose wine, beer (which was san miguel) and sangria on draught. Plus a range of branded soft drinks ie pepsi and fanta etc on draught. Also coffee machines for self service too. If you wanted something else each bar had a member of staff to serve you from a cocktail (around 5) to any spirit (local)
7 our room had a minibar stocked daily with cans of beer and softdrinks plus a 2 litre bottle of water, ideal for the pool area
8 the restaurants also took your drink order and were with you either straight away or within a couple of minutes. (this was the time to order a bottle of wine for all inclusive and was great tasting)
9 never had a problem with any member of staff. All very friendly and made the holiday flow.
10 there are 4 pools that we found anyway! 1 was smallish but warm, not too deep and had a waterslide that was a nice touch for the lad of 7. The larger pools were all at least 1.3 metres deep and 1 was heated and the other 2 were cool.
11 plenty of sunbeds available and quite new looking
12 very good entertainment for all (our ages of 7, 40,41 and 72) was a bit apprehensive about this from reading reviews before but was pleasantly surprised. Some very professional acts layed on each night and the leisure team who were multiskilled did activities during the day and put on some very good shows at night (i am sure a few of them must be professional dancers!)
My lad enjoyed the snake show as he was asked on stage to hold a variety of snakes and we got a lovely souvineir poster and photo of him with one whuich was a nice touch.
13 we got enough sun imn november which made it too!!

1 my wifes dad does suffer with his hips so walking was a bit of a problem but lifts are available to shorten journeys and avoid steps
2 if your child can't swim you are limited on the safe pools but if you are in with them it isn't a problem and armbands and inflatables were allowed in most pools
3 an hours journey from the airport
4 just found the beds slightly hard and funny shaped pillows

other comments

* queing for the restaurants is governed by what time you eat. this varied from straight in to about a 7 min wait but once in it was self service to get food so to me not an issue at all.

A great place which recharged our batteries. just what we wanted and i highly reccommend it!

Room Tip: on our experience A block was great!

Just back from a week at the Luabay and had a great time. My wife and I went along with our Son, Daughter-In-Law and Grandson. We received a warm welcome when we arrived at the hotel, and were taken to our suites in a buggy within 5 minutes of checking-in. We were given adjoining suites that were spacious and spotlessly clean. We overlooked the main pool and had a sea view. Our sons room had a large balcony, extending the length of the two rooms.

The quality of the food was very good and you had a varied selection at breakfast, lunch and dinner. There were three speciality restaurants (we used two), but they were not as good as the buffet restaurant.

There are a number of pools, and plenty of sun beds, and the kids pool was quite most days. The evening entertainment was better than we had expected, and our Grandson loved the mini disco.

One of the nicest things about the hotel was the staff. Every member of staff we spoke to was friendly and extremely helpful. Not something you always find in Tenerife.

This is an excellent hotel for families, but there are a number of quite restful areas if you just want to sit and read your book or have a drink.

We plan to go back to The Luabay early next year as it's very good value, and all in all a well run hotel.

Room Tip: We were in L 217 and L 219. Room L219 has the bigger balcony and bathroom.

This was our first visit to the hotel and certainly wont be our last. We did upgrade to the Splendt, which I think we got for a good price at the time as it appears much more expensive now, altho it did have advantages I would seriously think about whether I would upgrade to this again. We priced up the holiday via first choice but then found booking our own flights and direct with hotel we saving a couple of grand!! I'll break my review into sections for ease of reading:

Room: we had a suite room with sea view C312 this room was fab! everything we wanted.. Large bedroom on the back with twin beds pushed together (our children aged 8 & 2) had this room, plenty of wardrobe space and a large flat screen TV. Bathroom, good. Lounge on the front with patio doors onto balcony over looking quiet pool, sofa was made into a bed for the whole duration but wasn't a problem. Fridge with mini bar, well stocked with variety of drinks (think we got extras with spendt). Location of the room was perfact, not too far from main reception/bar/restaurant area but still quiet enough not to hear any noise at night.

Was slightly worried as I had read a few bad reviews but to be honest we thought the buffet was great! never got bored in a 2 week trip, as part of splendt we could have eaten in one of the 3 speciality restaurant every night, but we only bothered visiting once and then stuck to the buffet. Lunch was either at the snack bar (limited choice) or in the main restaurant..plenty of choice! The only thing I would say is be careful with the thicker pieces of pork as on 3 occasions ours was raw!! In the evening the main benefit of splendt was that you didn't have to queue for dinner as you are allocated your own designated seating area... altho we usually ate around 6.30, 7pm and there wasn't a queue then.

We could use our free 2 hour allocation at ay point during our stay and you just turn up... the spa is lovely!! I only went in for 45 mins but felt lovely and relaxed after. The only downside is that the hotel don't have a crèche for 2 year olds, therefore my husband and I had to use the spa separately.

Pools... one word... FREEZING! as lovely as they are you can last about 10 mins before you need to get out.. shame that the slide has so many restrictions! only for kids between a certain age and between certain heights, so our 2 year old was hugely disappointed.

Small kids LOVE the disco which is at 8pm each night, so we had to get our little one to have a sleep in the day so he was awake for it...by the end of the fortnight he knew all the dances to all the songs! My older son loved all of the animal shows and managed to hold most of them that came. Loads for kids to do, mine especially loved the high wires and mini golf.

have to say the staff work extremely hard and what seems like very long hours, and the hotel seems very well run, most staff were very friendly with the exception of a couple of restaurant staff.

Outside the Resort:
We planned to do all sorts of trip but only managed 2! a whale and dolphin watch trip on Flipper Uno boat, thoroughly recommend! will leave a review on their site. Also went to Aqualand as we thought it would be more appropriate with 2 younger children, will leave a review on there also. Please make an effort to leave the resort!! just a 5 minute walk down the hill is Playa de la Arena shops/bars/beach a nice walk and we went to the beach 3 times, you do have to becareful as the sea was very rough twice but then once it was lovely and calm, yes there is a hill to get back up but its not as bad as people make out! Also worth a walk is the town of Los Gigantes, lovely shops/bars etc, marina to get the boats for trips spectacular cliff scenery, about 10/15min walk but we only walked it back once when it was cloudy and late in the day, the other times we got a taxi, just over 3 euros - bargain when its hot!

Pros: allocated seating so no queues, daily newspaper free, any wine/cocktails at no extra cost, seaview, daily pool towels delivered to room in evening, free wifi,

Cons, annoying when staff don't move people out of allocated seating area we had to complain on several occasions! Unless you are really bothered about what type of alcohol you drink then its not worth it.... there are several other things but overall the pros for us was what it was all about so you have to way up whether you want to pay extra for these privilidges.

A couple of things that could be improved:
Reception, there is only an area for check in and check out... slightly confused where to go with general questions/help as there is always someone checking in so it takes ages to be seen.

Creche... apparently first choice run one but it stops mid October which surprises me as there were so many small kids. It would be an advantage for the hotel to run one for kids smaller than kids club age, even if you have to pay a fee for it... would make parents lives so much easier if they want to do something together for a couple of hours.

Overall, excellent resort!!!! would defo recommend and would defo go again

Room Tip: C block overlooks quiet pool and I would defo pay for the upgrade of sea view, altho we didn't g...

We have just returned from a weeks stay (19th - 26th Nov). We flew with Thomsons and although the flight was fine the reps at the airport were very disorganised. They put us on the wrong coach and then did not have enough seats on the correct one and tried to blame us for the error. There was no rep on the coach and driver did not speak English so newbies were unaware of where to get off.
We visited this hotel at the same time last year but standards have dropped.
Reception staff were unfriendly and unhelpful but as we had visited previously we didn't need to use them much. We did have a couple of problems with the room and these were sorted promptly. You have to pay for the safety deposits which we did not have to last year. You can't check in until 3 pm but we were ready this time and went off to the buffet lunch.
Wi-Fi was available in the main building and was free but you had to get a ticket from the miserable reception staff and they were not helpful.
Breakfast was ok but very busy and noisy.
We had lunch at the pool bar and the BBQ is a nice addition.
Evening meals were a nightmare - long queues every night to get into the canteen (can't really call it a restaurant!). The food was varied but well below the standard of last year.
There was a very strong sewerage smell outside the bar in the evening.
Another new addition was having to queue for your drinks and wait to be called to the bar which caused no end of confusion for everyone!
The pools and surrounding area were very clean and looked after.
Our room was fine and the kettle was a nice addition - we were in block M and overlooked the very noisy slide pool. I must agree with other reviewers there did appear to be hoards of children everywhere but they do appear to be well catered for.
Don't think we will return as we have been to better 4 star all inclusive hotels and this is now at best a 3 star.
