“Nice quiet break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013

Very nicely kept contemporary styled hotel out on its own near a quiet little town that has a few café/restaurants and a church but not many people. Our room on the 5th floor was comfortable enough with good sea views from the balcony. Breakfast buffet food was good with Cava available and the evening meal fair enough in the lovely restaurant. Also could have breakfast and daytime snacks on the really nice terrace overlooking the well attended pool area. Lounge and bar areas were fine and well served but every one goes to bed soon after 10pm which indicates the age (50+) of most of the guests this time of year. Nice relaxing break in the sun.

Room Tip: Higher the room the better for the views

We stayed at Eurotel Altura from Tuesday 22 nd October for 5 days.We were allocated a standard room on a high floor (9th floor ) as requested.Room was fine ,only complaint was tiny bathroom.Beautiful views from balcony. Many miles of beautiful almost deserted sandy beaches.Food at breakfast was plentiful and varied, something for all, icing on cake was the opportunity to eat al fresco on the sheltered terrace at the end of October.Dinner was disappointing.Limited choice and food was almost lukewarm even when just fresh from kitchen.Shame because dining area is very nice.Pool area well kept and lots of sun beds. All public areas very well looked after. There were rarely any residents in bar /lounge areas probably due to extortionate prices. As previous post stated prices were too high and it was a pity as there were little alternatives off season. Also, the tv showed football constantly,a music channel would have been a welcome change.Choice of wines in bar was disappointing and hotel choice was ,in my opinion ,not nice.Visited spa ,pool area and it was very welcoming and a peaceful oasis on a wet day, again at a cost! Altura is very quiet off season and hotel has an almost captive audience. There is a facility to visit Monte Gordo, Vila Real and Tavira in the hotel minibus on 3 evenings per week.If a well kept , peaceful, quiet, alcohol free retreat is what you are after then Eurotel may fit the bill.

We stayed here from the 22nd October to 27th October having stayed here a couple of times before. I don't think this hotel has a fully qualified chef due to the plain cold tasteless food on offer. The breakfasts are not catering for British visitors who would prefer a hot cooked breakfast. How they manage to get everything cold is amazing because if they can serve hot food on the patio for lunch then it's obvious they don't care at all about the guests . The prices are exorbitant for a 4star ? Hotel. Watch for a couple of the barmen who pour coke in to your drink without being prompted ,is this a ploy to make you drink more? I was only half finished my Vodka and coke when I was asked if I wanted another one? At 6.50 euros plus 2.80 euros for the coke to say they're fleecing people would be an understatement. On the positive side the rooms have a wonderful sea view and the wi-fi is free as is the daily paper . There was free entertainment when we were there a couple of young guys who were very good but ,we were the only two people there to appreciate them. Maybe if they lowered there prices guests would maybe stay in the hotel. Finally if the flat screen tv in the bar is for the guests why is it permanently tuned to the football which the barmen are constantly watching!

The hotel, as a building, is excellent. Very clean, friendly staff, and very comfortable. The outdoor pool is supposed to be heated, but it isnt. Its freezing cold!!

THIS HOTEL IS BADLY LET DOWN by their prices, A Coca Cola in the bar is €3.25 whereas in a little supermarket across the road is €0.89 ! I know they have to make a profit but these prices are a rip off !!!
The breakfast Buffet is excellent, with a good choice of fruit, cereals, breads and full english ingredients, as well as cold meats and cheeses..
Dinner is very bad for a four star hotel, The buffet has very limited choice. The food is always lukewarm, and the vegetables are either frozen or tinned. The chefs have obviously never heard of seasoning, and the desserts are completely tasteless.
The local restaurants, if they are actually open at this time of year, have bland and boring menus - mostly very limited choice and no atmosphere.
The hotel facilities are great, apart from no ladies hair salon and no shop for souvenirs or bits and pieces. Not sure we would ever come back, which is a shame because the hotel itself is very good.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the pool and the sea. Best views from higher floors.

We stayed here for a week in Oct 2013 and had a very enjoyable stay. The rooms are excellent and all face the beach and have fantastic views along the coast. Food was better than average for a buffet without being special in any sense. The buffet could also be a little cramped at peak times for breakfast and dinner.

The pool and gardens are very nice, and have direct access to boardwalks in to town or on the beach where you'll find miles of wide, and very largely undeveloped, open beaches to walk (yes really.........on the Algarve!).

The small town has a good mix of bars and restaurants for evenings. Food in the hotel is ok but, again, not special.

The hotel is perfectly located for a golfing trip being no more than 20 minutes from any of the eastern Algarve course. Perfect!

Overall........very nice indeed and the high-floor upgraded rooms are excellent.

Again, as with a similar trip to a Spanish hotel, smoking is permitted in the semi-enclosed restaurant. Very annoying and unpleasant but, seemingly, considered acceptable, although almost certainly illegal.

Room Tip: All rooms have sea view. Upgraded superior rooms are larger, have better balconies and are high-floo...

We rate the Eurotel Altura as the finest hotel we have stayed at on the Algarve, and our last two weeks 1st to 15th October 2013 have not diminished our opinion in the slightest, we upgraded to a junior suite and the extra room + tea and coffee making facilities + dvd player+ scales in the bathroom (which we were too frightened to use!) were nice touches.

The staff remain excellent the service and concern for your enjoyment and general contact far surpasses some 5 * properties we have stayed at previously.

Housekeeping first rate, bar and restaurant likewise, Reception outstanding.

Room Tip: anything above the 4th floor is majestc

Just returned from 1 week holiday. Super hotel, wonderful pool, lovely rooms and, of course, a magnificent beach. Sadly, the holiday wasn't perfect because:-
- The breakfast buffet obviously aimed at continental European customers. Wide choice
of cheeses, cold meats, salads, breads etc. Us British however, looking forward to a hot breakfast, were more or less ignored. The toasting machines always set at very lowest heat so only gave you warm bread - not toast. The bacon was greasy and tepid - almost cold. The beans were cold and, on the 2 days they were available, the fried eggs were cold and hard. As for getting a hot/warm plate - forget it !
- Dinner was not cheap - 22euros for buffet meal or a lot more for a la carte. Previous reviewers have mentioned the very limited choice at dinner. Once again, a wide range of cold starters but just like breakfast, we were faced with only slightly warm (almost cold) food. Soup was tasty but tepid
and main courses were no better.

One other point - on checking into hotel, we were told that when taking first evening meal, there would be a free bottle of wine per couple. As we were a party of 3 adults in 1 room, all having paid full price, I expected an extra half bottle or, at least, a bottle of water - both were refused - this is just sheer meanness - exactly like no proper heating for keeping food hot.

Because of lack of hot food, we only ate once at the dinner buffet (as did many other guests) and went out to eat. Not the best idea in the world as Altura centre is a tip with only 2 restaurants worth visiting =- A Chamin and the Pizza restaurant. Both do excellent food but not cheap.

Thankfully, the hotel does offer a free return shuttle service into Montegordo on 3 evenings a week so we were able to get enjoyable (and hot) freshly cooked food from a wide choice of reasonably priced restaurants 3 times in the week.
