“Peaceful Delta Getaway”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

It’s a shame the older reviews on Trip Advisor still stand although this place has been under new management for two years. The prior owners lived offsite and only came once a week to deliver supplies while guests were left to the local staff. The new owners, Pierre and Veronique, live onsite and work hard to ensure guests are looked after, going so far as to personally take a pirogue (motorized canoe) 30 minutes to the jetty to meet each guest and bring them through the delta back to the inn.

The cottages look onto the water and are simple. We had a double bed (with moquito nettings) and two twin beds in our room, two bedside tables and a small ensuite bathroom with a cold water shower. There is no electricity, but you do get solar powered light and there is a common charging station near the dining room. (Note that the light is not really good enough to read at night, so plan on lots of early nights! It would be good if a bit more thought went into where lighting bulbs were placed to illuminate the room more evenly.)

There is a next day laundry service charged per piece and washed by hand in cold water. There is also a weak WIFI signal in front of the owners’ house.Good enough for e-mails, but note that the signal cuts in and out which we found to be par for the course even in more upscale accommodation in Senegal.

Food is very good except breakfast which is very scant—just a baguette per person, butter and jam. However, we asked for eggs and this was cheerfully provided for a supplement. They also kindly accommodated our vegetarian and no fish requests.

They run a number of interesting excursions at reasonable prices. They arranged for a pick up at Dakar which was clean, prompt and courteous. David drove very carefully too. On the way back the car was very dirty but the Mahmoud was kindly and took us on a pre-booked tour of a market and town with a shell cemetery and did a good job. To reserve here you need to send a deposit of 50% of the accommodation costs by wire. The balance must be paid in cash only.

The hosts are very kind, unobtrusive and helpful and we enjoyed our relaxing stay here immensely. Highly recommended.

I was sadly only at Bazouk du Saloum for one night, but it was fantastic. The owners are very involved with the running of the bungalows.

It was quite a trip from Dakar with public transport - an experience in itself. If you are two or more, I would recommend asking them to organise you transport. The Bazouk is comfortable and clean and is ideally situated right on the banks of the Delta. Veronique and Pierre will help organise any trips you'd like to do, and the cooking is excellent.

If you can afford to, I would highly recommend staying here for a few days. I really couldn't find anything to complain about. It is simple, and great value for money.

Veronique and Pierre, the new owners of Bazouk du Saloum (since last September) have developed this little haven of peace and tranquility into something really special. The jetty off the beach is the perfect spot for sundowners over the mangroves along with a twinkle of a solar-lit lantern. Justin, the restaurant waiter is always ready for an off-the-cuff conversation and can tell you stories about the history of Mar Lodj and its villages. The food is excellent and innovative - ask whether the ginger sweet potatoes will be on the menu! A group of women make and sell a variety of extraordinary jams (baobab, cashew apple, hibiscus, sweet potato). There are two bikes you can use (no extra charge) to visit the island and a variety of tours that include everything from shell islands to beach barbeques. They organised transport for us from Dakar - prompt, clean car.

If you've heard bad things about this place, it likely comes from the previous owners. Go on, give it another try!

Room Tip: Ask for a bungalow on the bolong.

Highly recommended! We booked two cottages for 3 nights in the Sine Saloum delta not knowing what to expect. We extended our stay for another two nights. It is that good. The bungalows we had were right on the banks of the river with beautiful sunset views. Each day you can sit and watch the river traffic pass by. Very calm and tranquil. The staff are very friendly and the managers, Veronique and Pierre, are extremely responsive. The restaurant has fixed menus and the food is very good. It's basic, barefoot luxury. However, if you must you can charge your! phones and IPads, or get wi-fi in the restaurant/reception area. Solar lights and lanterns are used at night. The stars above provide the rest. There are a variety of river and village excursions to eco and community sites. Don't miss it!

Room Tip: The two corner cottages facing the river that seem the most private.
