“Great place to releax”

We stayed here for three days in july. The swimming is great, the breakfast buffet is ok (don't expect too much), food is good (however it can take ages before served) and the view is marvellous! We took a boot to one of the islands (5000 rwf/hour), highly recommendable. ask someone of the staf to phone the boatmen! ps: Take enough books so you don't get bored :-)

Stayed at Centre Bethanie 26-28 June, 2013. Arrived in the dark with a group (for conference) travelling down their precarious driveway on a bus. Had bags taken down to the rooms next to the lake (room 25). Bed was in good condition and shower was hot 2 of 3 mornings (no curtain but as good as any I've had in retreat homes). I think rooms 17-23 would be a bit better. I was closer to the restaurant and so heard more noises from there but not really any problem. Buffet meals typical of Rwanda--chicken/fish/beef with several forms of starch :). Can't beat the view of lake and islands, the view of the fishermen (and the sounds of their singing). Swam in the lake. Water was clear. Only negative was that our first night had some excitement when they experienced a power surge which causes lights to explode (shower of sparks onto bed) and my charger flaming and melting. But, by the next day they had fixed the power problem.

I would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Closest to lake: 17-25. Other rooms are higher up in elevation and so can see more of the lake. Each...

I stayed at this place couple of times. It has marvelous lake view. they have 2 types of rooms. you could stay for as little as 30 $ for single and $25 in a shares rooms (2 people). The staff is really nice and quick to the spot. We had water leaking from under the door due to wrong slopes but it was quickly removed. Breakfast was OK and food was also OK.

The food is delicious! I will say I came with Peace Corps for a week-long conference during which we were served enormous buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks during our daily sessions, and it is possible that the hotel upped the ante for our benefit, but we observed meals cooked to order brought to other individuals staying at the hotel that looked just as good as what we were eating. We all glanced at the menu on the first day, and it looked good to me. Things are definitely expensive in francs, but if you've come to Rwanda for a short time with a few thousand dollars or euros, you can eat as much as we did, and we ate an incredible amount.

The rooms are extremely accommodating, and for the first time in Rwanda I had my room cleaned and my bed made every day. They even put fresh sheets on the beds each day. They also offer a laundry service.

The staff are very friendly, sweet really, and most of them know English, which if you didn't spend three grueling months studying kinyarwanda is probably helpful. The manager's a good guy, too.

Most importantly, the place is absolutely gorgeous. The beauty and size of Lake Kivu, combined with the islands dotting it creates a setting that looks like the South Pacific.

Room Tip: Get a room with Lake view!

I made my room comfortable as I was staying for a while. The view is fantastic.
Tips:
-If the ceiling leaks when it rains, ask to be moved to a dry room immediately.
-Let the reception staff know if something needs to be fixed right away. My shower hose leaked, and after explaining the problem (and drawing a diagram for the repair guy), I got a new hose.
-Check to see if your hot water tank is plugged in when you return to the room for the day.
-Order dinner ahead of time and don't be on a time schedule. It will take longer than you expect.
-Breakfast is a nice buffet, included in the room price.
-Expect a lot of hiking up and down steep steps on your way to/from the restaurant or reception (or anywhere in Kibuye!).
I will most likely stay at Centre Bethanie again.

Room Tip: rooms by the water are also near the restaurant. there is a short-cut if you don't need to pass...

The hotel is right on Lake Kivu with a really spectacular view of the lake. The rooms are on the spartan side, but they are clean and even have hot water. At around $50 a night, it is a good value. The only downside is the restaurant. The food is not bad but not great, and the service is really slow, even by Africa standards. The breakfast was quite disappointing.

We stayed here in August 2012 on our tour of the country. Kibuye is a bit of a sleepy town, but that's not a bad thing if it's relaxation you're looking for. This is a church property, but being run as an investment - - so if you're expecting a large religious presence, it's not really evident. We stayed in the "new wing" right on Lake Kivu, close to the restaurant. It was very nice and the rooms were large, with GREAT showers with lots of hot water and good pressure. The rooms were also very clean, with amazing views out over the lake, although they were a bit "characterless." Not like the amazing rooms at the Palm Garden Resort in Gisenyi, for example. But then again after hours on the (dusty and yet-to-be-paved) road from Cyangugu, just having clean, spacious rooms with oodles of hot water was itself a luxury! The food in the restaurant was also fine. Nothing fancy, but good and with reasonably quick service.

We did have a bit of a misunderstanding about the room rate on checkout (room had 2 double-sized beds in it [not at our request], and they tried to charge us extra vs. a standard double bed room, even though only 2 guests stayed in the room), but our guide was able to sort it out to our satisfaction after about a 15 minute, involved discussion with the hotel reception. Left a tad of a bad taste at the end of what was otherwise a pleasant stay in beautiful, lush surroundings.

Given that this is not a true church-run property, but more of a church-owned investment facility, the rates were not amazing like a true church guest house (e.g., Peace Guesthouse in Cyangugu or Our Lady of Fatima in Musanze), so next time we may try a different commercial lodging option.

Room Tip: The wing by the lake is newer and thus more expensive, but the older rooms up near reception seemed...
