Cormoran Lodge

I didn't spend the night here, but I wish I had and I definitely will the next time I visit Lake Kivu. I toured the rooms, went on a boat ride on the lake and ate lunch at the restaurant. The view is amazing, the rooms are amazing, and the food and service in the restaurant were excellent..

Just stayed two nights at this wonderful little lodge in Kibuye - the pictures tell more than my words could ever. The room was delightful - the restaurant is decent (not awesome) but better than average for Rwandan fare but really the location is awesome. Make sure you go in a decent 4 wheel drive vehicle because the road getting there is pretty rough. The views and sunset are stunning.

Spent just one night but wished we'd had a few more in this picture postcard location in western Rwanda.

It's a small hotel with about a dozen chalet style rooms, scattered across the hillside on the edge of lake Kivu. The views are spectacular, and swimming in the warm waters of the lake is a fantastic experience.

Access is via a pretty rough road above Kibuye, so a decent 4x4 is a good idea, but the effort is more than worth it.

Free wifi throughout the site plus a very good selection of local seafood and other Rwandan specialties in the cosy bar/restaurant.

Only slight gripe was the service in the restaurant - a few mistakes were made for our dinner group of 8 people, which was only partly excusable due to the presence of an even larger (20+) party who arrived to eat just after we started our meal. It felt a bit too like hard work trying to get a second round of drinks, for example, because all the staff were preoccupied by the larger group who were demanding almost all their attention.

Still, i would highly recommend this spot; would be a great place for a romantic few days while in the Western Province.

When you arrive on the rough dirt road, you will be blown away by the look of the Cormorant Lodge. Wood cottages on tree trunk stilts built into the steep hillside. The view from every balcony looks out on a stunning cove of Lake Kivu and the surrounding mountains. As you enter your room, a massive bed of logs, covered by a mosquito net, wood is every where, a TV, fridge, coffee maker, comfortable chairs. Our room had shelving for our cloThe bathrooms are spectacular with pebble stone walls and fine fixtures. The shower water is hot hot (be careful) and plentiful.
At the base of the hillside is a small beach (actually a sandbox) with childrens toys, loungers with cushions and towels. It is 12 feet further down to the water which is accessible from a floating dock. There are many water sports available but we did not use them.
Then why only an average rating?
The steep hillside that makes the lodge so spectacular soon becomes a challenge and then a burden returning to your room. The slope is far steeper than any but a black diamond ski trail and is paved with irregular stones. This is also true of the path to the bar and dining room. A waiter came to the beach area once during our afternoon. We ordered drinks but there was a long lag between ordering and being served. The waiter probably found the hill just as challenging.
On our first evening, we sat on the deck of the restaurant for drinks, then ordered our dinners. It was an hour before we were called in to the dining room to be served. Dinner was adequate but not really "cuisine" Two had filets with sauce, one beef, one pork. Both were a bit tough. My wife's fish was tasty but buried under spinach and a hard poached egg. My pizza had chicken and olives and the crust was quite dry. Fortunately I took a good look at the olives before biting in. They were unpitted and probably might have broken a tooth if I hadn't been vigilant.
The next evenings dinner was even slower and my pork and potato croquettes were quite salty. Most of the party did not finish their plates either. Then we ordered dessert. That made for a very late evening.
To close. This is Africa. Rural Africa. Things move at a different pace and the cooks have not been exposed to much of a diverse cuisine. If you would lie to stay at a beautiful lodge where the photos will impress your friends, the Cormorant will fit your needs. But be prepared to wait

This small lodge is really worth going! the tranquil setting on the Kivu lake is small but lovely! The rooms are like chalets and with a stair one is connected with another (also on the outside). As we are travelling with a wheelchair this resort is really not adapted to wheelchairs, it is steep and many steps. but the managment was very friendly, sent some pictures via e mail of how the paths were goiing. on arriving carriers were waiting and only some steps had to be taken to arrive in our lovely (very accessible room) The food is really very good! in fact the best we had on our trip through Rwanda! One can have a swim in the lovely lake, cormorans are flying and birds are singing, really had a good time here!

Room Tip: There a lot of steps and it is very steep, so if you have fitness problems: ask managment to sleep c...

The setting and rooms in this resort are lovely. Food is iffy, and service from one waiter was atrocious. Like some others, we also seemed to take an inordinately long time to check in. This was especially unforgivable since the room had been booked by a tour company in Kigali. Disorganization seemed rife. Another African resort that is still learning how to serve guests.
