We've just got back from Ibiza and stayed for four days at the Jardin de Palerme, only because every other hotel on the island was full, we spent our second day, driving around the island desperately trying to find somewhere(anywhere) with a vacancy- it was absolutely dreadful, I have rarely come across a place, especially in this price range, where the owners just don't seem to care about the guests at all, they are treated as a necessary evil to put up with.
Where do I start? We arrived at about 9:00 pm and had to drag our suitcases down seven sets of steep, dark steps,no help was offered and were shown to our "mini suite"which looked like a garage conversion, all the bed linen was the cheapest possible, the pillows were like cheap seat cushions. You can't even use the bedside lamps separately, so you can't read, without waking your partner, if you happen to wake up during the night because the bed is so damn uncomfortable
The whole hotel is a triumph of style over substance. It is very photogenic,I'm going to put some pictures up and I garauntee, people are going to say "what are you making such a fuss about?"it looks very pretty, but absolutely no thought has gone into thinking about how guests use a hotel - all the loungers are covered in white, wipe down plastic, who wants to sit in the sun on plastic? There is no indoor space that you can comfortably sit if it's raining(which it did)unless you are lying on the bed in your room.We did have a plastic lounger outside our room but it always seemed to be covered in fine black ash from the incredibly smelly bonfires burning nearby.
There is absolutely no service at all, you can't get breakfast served in your room, even a cup of coffee,it's served in the garden, pretty enough, but the meanest breakfast ever,a small bowl of cheap muesli,a small bowl of cornflakes and a small bowl of fruit-between two and a pot of yoghurt, then bread if you want it,anything else is simply not offered and anything as exotic as an egg, will cost you more- Did I mention we were being charged €270 a night for this? This will be the last you see of the staff for the day, there is no option to have lunch, let alone dinner and no service around the pool at all, there is an honesty bar where you can help yourself, which is locked at 11:00 pm.You are definitely encouraged to go elsewhere for as much time as possible, although you might decide staying around the pool is rather unpleasant anyway.
In the last two years, St. Josep has expanded from the sleepy little village it was, there are two big,new developments going up in town which creates a lot of construction noise and the road has been expanded, so you are effectively on the motorway, with the noise of cars and the large tourist coaches lumbering by all day.
The attitude of the owners is just so depressing, they just do not seem to care at all - they are completely apathetic and disinterested and to be honest I've had better service and amenities at backpacking hostels that I've stayed at.There is just no excuse for such shoddy lack of service-everybody working in the hotel seemed surly and unhappy, just gettting soap and toilet paper replaced was a battle.
The prices for what you get here are absolutely scandalous- €270 a night is just outrageous, especially when compared to hotels on the rest of the island - skip this shoddy rip off and head striaght for Can Atzaro(the best hotel on the island imho),Es Cucons,Can Lluc,Las Terrasses or if you want to stay in the area, Las Brisas (my other favourite hotel) and see some of the creativity, passion and welcome that Ibicencan hotels are capable of.Book early! as early as you can,the demand for hotel rooms is really high, especially in the summer wedding season,I started trying to book three months before we wanted to come and everywhere we wanted to stay was full, frankly I was surprised(and suspicious)that this hotel had any space-not anymore! It might survive a little longer, simply on the overflow from more popular hotels, but it can't survive long at these prices. It smacks of people who have gone into the boutique hotel business and then found out that it is harder work than they thought and that they actually have to deal with customers, they should either halve the prices(honestly, still too expensive) or start providing some service.
When we left, after dragging our suitcases back up seven flights of stairs ,no help offered and paying the enormous bill, the owner said off -handedly,"Oh well!, see you around,I suppose",if she'd bothered to ask how our stay went,I would have told her,but I doubt she would have cared.
