“Fantastic Family holiday location - nice and quiet but near to great beaches and things to see and do”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2013

We had an amazing trip to Cala Pi and Trip advisor was really helpful as it offers a number of views. For what it's worth this is mine:

Firstly, you have to decide what sort of holiday you want - busy / quiet / family etc. We were going for some peace and quiet and to keep away from the 'lively' club scene given we have 3 girls under 11 - so it was perfect for us. It's mainly full of families and a really good mix of people from lots of countries.

Getting there: Cala Pi is about 40 minutes from Palma by transfer and you can do this privately for about 80 euros but we had the transfer included in our holiday so this was good. You can also get the hire car from the minute you get there and it will save you the transfer cost.

It's an easy drive although if you haven't done it before and it's late at night you have to watch for the right turnings.

Accommodation : the apartments are lovely and if you like self catering are well kitted out. Most of them are 2 bedroom but they also have 3 x  3 bedrooms although they don't advertise these so you have to book direct before you go. Check the onagrup website.

Food: we went half board as it was the first time we'd been here. Breakfasts are filling and in the evening There is a really great selection with grilled meat or fish every night as well as pasta, vegetables, bread and salads. Lots of deserts too so you'll get your money's worth.

Staff: are all friendly and helpful. Special mention of the great kids club which was a real bonus. Angel does a great job with a brilliant team in Cesar, Natalie and Magde. They really made it lots of fun for the kids. Keep it up!

Sights and where to go / what to do : we rented a car from the hotel for about 150 euros for 3 days and went to the monastery and also the Sineu market then over to the caves of Drach. I'd recommend the caves as key were quite special - not that cheap but quite amazing.

We also had a day in Aqualand which was brilliant and a must if you like water slides.

Beaches : the cove beach at Cala Pi is gorgeous and we were lucky enough to see a Ray swimming there which was awesome. Es Trenc is also relatively close and whilst it can be quite busy it's a gorgeous beach and absolutely worth going to see. Take an umbrella if you don't want to hire one there (it's about €16) and parking is about €6.

Overall - brilliant holiday for us - would highly recommend it to others looking for somewhere to get away from it all and spend time as a family. you can do it all cheaper if you book the segments direct with flights / accommodation / transfers / food etc but we wanted to do it easily so booked it all through lastminute

Room Tip: Ask for a high one if they gave one available.

Just arrived home after 1 weeks stay and cannot recommend highly enough for those wanting a relaxing family holiday. Travelled with 3 boys aged 7-9yrs and they were kept busy all week by the great entertainment team. The apartment we stayed in was 2 bed, 1st floor and was great for us with the added bonus of a laundry room for drying all the wet swimming clothes/towels and storing all the inflatables! We stayed on bed/breakfast board and made good use of the varied breakfast, then had a light snack for lunch and enjoyed one of the great restaurants in the evening. 250 yards from the hotel is a lovely Greek restaurant, but reserving is recommended.

A great resort if you have a family and want an relaxing time with everything laid on.
The apartments are all high quality with aircon (critical in july/august). We had a standard 2 bed the first week and moved to a 2 bed with roof terrace for the second week. As others have said, these 3rd floor apartments are a bit special and worth asking for,
I have 3 boys of 16,13 and 10 and the animation team kept them occupied and I hardly saw my kids for the whole 2 weeks. perfect! We took 7 dinners in the buffet as a discount package when checking in and this proved great value at about £12 a head for all you can eat. Perfect for teenagers. There are some nice places to eat withing walking distance but apart from those few restaurants there's nothing. We didn't care as my objective was to consume books, lie, swim, read, swim etc, If you do want to see the island you really will need a car,
This location is consistently the hottest on the island and was 38-42 while we were there in July/aug.
if you want a quiet sophisticated holiday, this isn't it. Though I'm sure you could have one here if you tried.
If you want to kick back, have your kids taken off your hands, drink too much in the evening after an all you can eat buffet while watching cheesy tribute acts or dancing salsa at a pool party, this place is for you.

note that fishing opportunities are almost zero without a car (for those interested).

Room Tip: not telling room numbers, I'm going back!

You must have a car here as it takes some time to get anywhere, but beware certain 'all inclusive' pre-booked airport rentals as some(ours) insist on you taking out extra insurance before releasing the vehicle, and after queueing for over an hour you will sign anything, and the internet booking agent seems to collude with the practice, so no refund!.
The room was OK, we were actually given a choice of two . The AC was not working which was not a problem as we slept with the windows open. The shower head kept shooting off and once hit my toe drawing blood! The buffet was average but very useful for families. The seafood night disappointed however as the buffet contained no shellfish and just offered three types of fish.We often cooked for ourselves or got a takeaway. The best place to eat was Miguel's just down the road - very good in an attractive setting. Also Bussa a little further up on the main road( jolly owner, grumpy young waiter) ; lovely suckling pig.
Angelani was OK but very, very slow service, even when only four tables occupied. Also a lovely little known and secluded beachside restaurant with bars and pool at Puig de Ros named ' MHARES', so look for the signs in the town.
Lots of interesting sights; Joan Miro Fondacione in Palma, and Bellver castle, Modern Art museum and the city itself. Many others too including picturesque coastal villages and harbours and a huge market in Satanyi. The Spanish highways authority does need to do a lot of work on the signage to all their places of interest, as we usually only found a sign when we were about 300 metres away, and after many wrong turns!
We noticed that Eurotel reps in the hotel were busy trying to sign new arrivals up as members, using familiar high pressure techniques. I had not heard of Eurotel Group, so upon return, I read on the'Timeshare Talk' website (and I do not know if it's true or not), that the happy and contented members who casually encourage others to sign up, are in fact employees of Eurotel; so be cautious!
The actual hotel staff were very helpful and polite, and the animation team were constantly on the job, great for the kids. The entertainment at night was well produced and generally family friendly, (give or take a few bare botties).
We had a good holiday there despite the usual holiday dangers; jellyfish, sunstroke, car rentals and sales reps.

Just like a previous reviewer commented, it is key to arrive at the Cala Pi (pronounced "Pee") on Saturday, and ask for a top floor unit with a private roof deck. Amazing!! We attempted to check in early, but they could not accommodate an early check in. Then they mentioned that if we could wait even longer, rather than taking the first available unit, then they could give us a top floor unit, which it turns out has an amazing roof deck furnished with a table & chairs, an outdoor grill, and sunbathing recliners. Plus the apartment had its own small balcony on the bedroom/living room/kitchen level (we were in unit 328). The resort itself was great. The restaurant was half buffet-style and half regular restaurant. There was also a pool bar where you could also order food along with your drinks while poolside, and there was a small beach bar at the beach with a limited menu- perfect for a beach day. Please note that the beach is a little bit of a hike. With us being on the top floor, I counted 209 stairs between the beach and our room. Totally doable, but not super close or incredibly convenient. There were lots of activities for the "bambinos," or little ones, although we didn't bring our child. It looked like they were having a great time, and I would seriously consider coming back with our kid. Because there are two pools, we were always able to find pool chairs even though we emerged from our apartment in the early afternoon. There was a small but great grocery store on the premises with fresh baked bread and pastries, meats and cheeses, fruit, beer, wine, liquor, drinks and basic non-perishable food items, plus a large selection of water toys for the kiddos.

Our apartment is the reason this place got 4 stars instead of 5. The bed was SO hard. My back hurt every morning. The couch in the living room was very uncomfortable. The living room furniture was very old and dirty-looking. The kitchen was stocked pretty well as far as dishes and basic kitchen tools. It did have a clothes washer in the kitchen but did not have a dishwasher. We had a small ant problem if we left any food out at all so we had to make sure that we hand washed all dirty dishes immediately. The hot water heater was very small and did not last very long at all.

Overall we had a great stay. Like the others stated, it is probably the equivalent of a three-star spot. There were a lot of redeeming qualities that made up for the aspects that were lacking in our minds.

Room Tip: Top floor!!!!

We got back from our second Cala Pi holiday last night and it was as good this time around if not better.

I've covered the bases on supermarkets / things to see previously, so won't repeat that, but overall the staff were great, the standards were as good as last year and the weather was better, so we all had a good time.

Just a note on the room allocation - we 'rebooked' last October (so 8 months ahead), but it seems that you can't pre-order a rooftop terrace room, which was a little disappointing. We did get one in the end, but apparently it's difficult because of the mysterious 'members' who get first choice on the rooms when they come.... Probably the only downside; I kind of expected that if you'd paid up front you'd be guaranteed a certain type of room, but that's not how it works.

This time we paid 200 euros for the 4 of us for 3 days half board. The food was very good indeed and excellent value I think. It lets you take in the 'big' nights such as poolside BBQ as well, so you can build variety in pretty easily.

Locally Miguels now has a snack bar and they do really good pizzas. It's less formal and cheaper than their original restaurant.

Final note - if you are thinking of going to Palma and are nervous about driving, there's a great underground carpark which has it's own sliproad 'under' the catherdral, so you just come off the motorway and park without having to negotiate the city centre roads. It's worth the trip as the city is lovely.

Hoping to go back once again next year!!

We believe the room or apartment that you get on holiday materially influences your overall opinion of a hotel or apartment complex. So if you read our review, bear that in mind.

We did a one week timeshare exchange through Interval International. Our exchange certificate gave the number of a top floor, west facing unit overlooking the restaurant, pools and beach that must have been banked by its owner. We therefore assumed this would be regular timeshare swap, that our accommodation would have been allocated at the time of booking, and we might even get the apartment on our certificate. How wrong we were. It suited us to travel out to Majorca a “day late” on Sunday, although our apartment was obviously booked from 4pm Saturday. When we arrived at midday Sunday, the first thing that happened is that we were made to feel grateful that an apartment happened to be available, instead of us having to wait until 4pm. If you are members of Eurotel Onagrup, we suspect you might get some preferential treatment but we discovered that for exchange punters like us, this resort simply allocates apartments on arrival – so it’s first come, first served. This means the chances of actually getting the apartment number on the exchange paperwork is just about nil, and as the only official change day for the whole resort is on Saturday, if like us you arrive on Sunday, you’ll probably end up with the least appealing apartment on the resort. Street parking outside the resort is not a problem, apart from the weekend when local day trippers arrive in their droves for the beach. So when you arrive Saturday and can’t find anywhere close by to park, don’t worry, they do go home.

A high proportion of the apartments overlook the pools or face towards Cala Pi beach, but there are some that face the road. We were consigned to a very musty smelling ground floor apartment #23 with a bathroom that smelt bad for most of the time and like an open sewer for the rest of the time. Reception did send round a cleaner who left a very strong smelling industrial spray for us, which helped mask the smell somewhat, but the spray itself got to the back of your throat as well. Most road facing apartments are shielded by yew hedging, but not 23. 23 looks out directly over Cala Pi’s central roundabout and bus stop and is fronted by an access road that is used to take out the wheelie bins every morning (well at least there weren’t night time collections in Cala Pi). The apartment was superficially clean, but when you looked at things like ridges of doors, the patio table etc, you came to realise the cleaning wasn’t very thorough. We thought that #23 is probably one of a few Cala Pi apartments that don’t get used as much as others, and which are only allocated when the resort is just about full, as it was the week we stayed.

Based on ours, we’d describe the apartments themselves as being typical 2 to 3 star quality, with the added bonus of a nice 32 inch LCD TV that had a good picture and a number of English language stations, including BBC1 & BBC2, plus air-conditioning units in the lounge and a bedroom. There’s an electricity and water surcharge of €20 a week and the safe fee is €12. We had to go an ask for a kettle (twice) as there wasn’t one in the apartment and the first one they brought us didn’t work. There’s a toaster and microwave, and to be fair a proper fridge-freezer, with a small but useful freezer part. They seem to have changed an oven for a washing machine but we think a dishwasher would be more useful for the majority of holiday makers. Given the type of simple foods many people have in their apartments, we were extremely surprised to find you don’t get a bread knife, milk jug, sugar bowl, egg cups, egg whisk, or a mixing bowl to scramble your eggs. The beds have really cheap nasty mattresses. The double in the front bedroom gave no support so you get a really bad back, while the mattresses on the single beds in the back bedroom were just plain hard, instead of being firm and supportive. The double and one of the singles were also extremely noisy when you turned over. So even though the resort is so very quiet at night, possibly expect disturbed sleep. The lighting in the bathroom was quite good and the shower pressure was much better than we’d expected. The apartments have individual small hot water tanks – so assume just enough water for two quick showers, then you’ll have to wait for it to reheat. You only get the smallest possible bath towels, but to be fair they are changed Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, which is when you have maid service. The sheets are changed mid-week. Bring your own pool towels as they’re not supplied here.

We have a rule of thumb – if we’re given what we consider to be a bad room, we don’t spend money in the hotel or apartment complex. So we can’t comment on the food in El Mirador Restaurant or the Snack Bar, or the prices in the bars. We thought the a la carte menu wasn’t as inviting as some of the menus in other restaurants in Cala Pi. We ate in 3 of the 7 outside restaurants that are within a 5 minute walk of the apartments. Based on our experiences, we’re happy to recommend all 3: Miguel’s, Sa Terrassa and Angelani’s – see our separate restaurant reviews. It doesn’t appeal to us, but if you’re happy with hotel style buffet food you can buy discounted buffet half board for 3, 5 or 7 days. Given they’re competing with supermarket drinks prices, we were quite surprised to see no mention of a happy hour in the bars. The small onsite supermarket is not cheap so do most of your shopping in one of the 3 supermarkets up in Llucmajor, or in the Mercadona in Puigderos on the PMV6014 road from S’Arenal.

The resort has a very young and very active animacion team – which is probably good if you like that sort of thing. The downside is that it can get quite raucous around the pool and half the time the loud music is, in our view, god awful stuff that would fit nicely in an 18 to 30 club rave party. While we stayed, even though the resort was just about full, only a small proportion of guests couldn’t get by without having to bag the best beds around the pools. So we think you should nearly always be able to find free beds, no matter what time you decide to lie out, and the ratio of beds to parasols is very good. If you like beaches but are less mobile, be aware there are 137 steps up from the beach to the El Mirador restaurant terrace.

If we’d had a nice, non-musty, non-sewer-smelling apartment with a good outlook, we would definitely have given 3, maybe even 4. As it is, Cala Pi Club just gets 2 from us and we won’t be risking an exchange here again.

Room Tip: Probably have to be a Eurotel Onagrup member

Dear guest,

On behalf of the whole team, I would like to thank you for the time you spent in sharing your experience in regard to your stay in Ona Cala Pi, which I have noted with regret has not been to your complete liking.
I would like to inform you that the scheduled times are: check-in at 16h and check-out at 10h. The difference in these schedules regarding a hotel room is due to the established cleaning protocols. The time required to ensure the readying of an apartment for the next customer is greater compared to that for a hotel room. As you have been able previously to verify, in the case that there should be free apartments, it would be our pleasure to do the check-in for you in advance.
I must say that I am surprised by the comment about our cleaning protocols because they are actually one of the points most valued by our customers.
Making our customers satisfied is our main objective; therefore, day after day the whole team strives to offer our customers a better service than that perhaps expected.
We look forward to welcoming you to Ona Cala Pi in the near future in order to show you our daily progress.
