VERY large archeological Roman port city excavation. You will need several hours and flat sturdy shoes. The museum has many marble sculptures and is included in the 4 Euro admission price. It's 2 euro for a map which I found necessary to get around. More informational signs would have been helpful, looks like many are missing from empty poles. I didn't get an audio headset but probably should have. Very interesting place to visit.

“Great Half-day trip”
Reviewed June 5, 2004

We did a half-day tour with VasTours- very enjoyable. Very well preserved ruins with much more intact street/building relationships compared to most of Rome as there was less building on top of the old structures. Definitely worth a trip.

“Big archeological site”
Reviewed March 16, 2004

This is the port from the age of Imperial Rome (then the river shifted). It's been excavated. It's quite large - I was there for 7.5 hours with only a brief stop for lunch. At times I thought it would never end. Some areas have very good new explanatory signs in english. Other areas have older ones that say less. Much of it further from the main portion just has some name signs, and empty poles. Maybe new signs are being installed. (I hope so, they really help make sense of what was there.)When I was there they were sold out of english guidebooks and the acoustiguides were not in service yet.But the scale of the place is very impressive. It's a pretty easy day trip: Metro to the train, then a 10 minute walk. Total one way fare is only one euro!
