“Relax in paradise!!”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Just got back from a brilliant 7 days at this wonderful place. We are residents in Singapore and it was a great holiday away from the hustle and bustle of city life. This family run business is like a "home from home" and we were made to feel like we were part of the family the moment that we arrived - in the back of a truck. If you want a holiday away from the crowds then Riverview is perfect. You can enjoy sunning yourself on the perfect beach, kicking a football around with the locals, kayaking up the river (or surfing on some of the bigger waves out at sea), snorkeling, visiting the turtle project and hiking through prime tropical forest. The local restaurants serve up some great food and at a very reasonable price. The chalets have all the basic amenities and they are very clean!! We had a chalet with a view of the beach in front and the river at the back - awesome!!
There are some insects knocking around and you will get the odd bite - but surely this is to be expected on a island which is covered in a tropical rainforest!! {it's not rocket science!} Take some insect spray and you will be fine.
My wife and I cannot recommend this place enough. Great place, great family and friendly local people. I can't wait to go back next year!!

I stayed here over Christmas with my partner and we were disappointed with the value we received for what we paid. First of all the weather was not ideal as it rained for 2 days straight, which I can't complain about and didn't mind but the A frame chalet that we stayed in felt like we were in the storm itself. It was very basic with only matresses on the floor as beds. The bed linen could have been better and the toilet cleaner.
As it was wet we would hang out in the open communal area where the owner John would also sit and watch tv. It felt like we were intruding in his home as he sat and watched tv and had dinner.
The positives though are that John would provide a 4x4 for us to cross to Tekek and offered to bring us back after we trekked through the jungle to the other side. He was friendly but at the same time a bit not interested on our comfort or needs. We did not pay backpacker prices but received a less than receptive backpacker service.
The location cannot be faulted and the Island itself but be aware of these points. Plus try go to Tioman when it's not monsoon season, just as it may rain all the time.

I went to River View for 4 days and it was pure paradise! I've spent alot of time on Tioman, mostly on the west coast where its a bit crowded and tourist dollar driven. This time i stayed on the east coast of Tioman in Juara. I stayed at River View and it was great. The rooms are nice, with one end facing the beach and the back balcony facing the jungle river. There is shade for most of the rooms and it is nice and cool with no hot afternoon sun as it dips below the mountain, unlike the west side of Tioman. I rarely saw a mosquito, and didnt find any bed bugs or other critters in my quarters for that matter. At night all you need is the ceiling fan on low. John and his wife, whom also run the famous turtle conservation project on the island, were very friendly and eco-minded. They have great coffee, free of charge in the morning, and a big sitting area on the beach with pool table and drinks, where guests gather to chat. On the west side of the island where i have stayed before, places like Salang and ABC, i didnt dare go on the beach for fear of being eaten by sand flies, but in Juara i walked along the beach quite a bit and had only 1 bite. There is also a concrete path thats runs behind all the development to walk on. The back balcony of the River rooms overlook a nice jungle river which you can explore by hopping in one of the kayaks and paddling back quite a ways into the jungle. You can see lots of monkeys and monitor lizards here. Overall, Juara was much nicer than anywhere in Tioman i have been and River View was the perfect spot to stay in Juara. There is some Chinese place that seemed to have nice looking rooms with aircon, but very exposed to each other and the sun, and right next to the chinese restaurant which was very noisy everytime i walked by. I also managed to do a few dives on the east side which is not as popular as the west side for diving, and a couple spots i dived where amazing! Just as good as anything i have seen on the other side. Next time i return i will definately stay at River View! Make sure you also go visit the turtle project at the other end of the beach and support the great work they are doing there. You will also learn alot of interesting facts about the turtles. Thanks for your generosity John!

We stayed for 2 nights, following leaving juara beach due to the noise. Riverview was tranquil and lovely. It is very basic but clean and the breeze means its cool. We did not encounter, bed bugs, sand flies or Mosquitos...however we're warned about the sand flies. It's was like a small enclave of peace, so if you are just looking to relax and enjoy it definitely does the job...

We had a wonderful 3 nights at Riverview. We found the chalets clean and basic. Beautiful views right from the balcony onto the river or beach. We loved the simplistic atmosphere away from the shiny lights of Singapore. We found no bedbugs and sandflies are only out on the beach for 1 hour in the afternoon. Insect spray works a treat. For all those who complain, I have to remind you of the fact that it is an idyllic location at bargain price. We have been to Tioman three times and just booked our second visit to Riverview.
We found John a great host, friendly, and lots of information on the wildlife and a real respect for the locals and their way of life.

Location was perfect for what we wanted: to relax. Therefore we stayed at Riverview for 3 nights, in a nice quiet bay, whereas there was still the possibility for some activities (canoing, snorkling, hiking).
However, it turned out that our beds were full of bedbugs. When we told that to the owner, his reaction was basically as follows: you must have brought them, I have never had bedbugs (neither did we, so we are positive we didn't bring them); for you it's just a couple of itchy days, for me it means that i have to clean up after you; if something is wrong, tourists always blame me, etc.
So much for hospitality; he never said anything like 'that sucks for you guys'.

Just some info on bedbugs: in two nights my friend had about 50-60 bites, some quite big and painful. The bugs may lay their eggs in clothes, sheets, towels, bags, etc. So we ended up having to wash all our clothes at 60 degrees Celsius, so some of our clothes got ruined.

What was intended as a relaxing stay, had become a frustrating experience.

I'm sorry that you had problems. We do our very best to keep our resort spotlessly clean and this includes regular vacuuming of the beds and daily cleaning of the beach. The response that you received was not representative of how we run things here, our guests are our first priority.

The River view inn is very basic but ok. It´s like a hostel where everybody has it´s own hut. It was clean, with a very small bathroom and a small basic bed. The small balcony with amazing view over the river to the jungle is great. They don´t serve meals, but you can always ask the "manager" for a recommendation or a snorkeling trip. The reef in front of the beach is good. The Beach itself is perfect! White sand, blue water and the jungle in he background. But there are bloody sandflies! The bite you all over day and night. Unfortunately I would not go back because if the sandflies.

We do our best to keep the sandfly population down by cleaning our beach every day. This is the best way to reduce them without the use of pesticides which we cannot condone. We are the only resort in Juara to clean daily and therefore have the cleanest beach in the area of which we are very proud. I'm sorry that you still had a problem.
