“Good if you like cats and want to be away from the action.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2012

Stayed for two nights recently in a garden-view air-con chalet. Not quite sure why the place gets such favourable reviews - it's certainly quiet, nice if you like lots of cats around you, and the chalet interiors are one step up in terms of quality - not necessarily cleanliness or facilities - from some of the other Tioman resorts. But so too are the prices - MYR 130 (£26 / $40) per night seemed quite steep (relatively) especially as the breakfast was very modest (big spoon of grey porridge with a plate of tasty fresh fruit salad one morning, plus coffee from an urn). The staff are friendly enough and it's definitely a quiet place, as it's right at the end of the main Tekek strip, just before the road heads uphill. I walked to the resort with my wheeley-bag luggage from the airport and that took 10-15 minutes. Tekek is a good part of the island to stay at if you want to feel you are close to the locals, rather than being at a tourist resort (such as Salang). But the other side of that is that there's not much around - just one bar along the beach, and a few eating places and mom-n-pop shops The island's only ATM is just across the track from the airport. I can see the appeal of Swiss Cottage for those who are in Tioman solely or primarily for diving (the dive shop is part of the grounds) and for those who want somewhere quiet and off the beaten track, but overall it didn't really do it for me. Next time I'll be back to Salang again I think.

We were here in April 2012 for a couple of days and it is a real paradise. We stayed in one of the beachfront chalets and truly enjoyed the great views and relaxing ocean sounds. This is just such a great place to escape the busy cities for a couple of days. The chalets are very clean and the staff are always helpful and smiling.
If you arrive by plane, you can easily walk there from the airport.

Don't hesitate to go there if you need some rest!

Stayed at Samudra Swiss Cottage seaview beach chalet and we just simply love it. The chalet is on the beach and just a few metres away from the sea. The view from the chalet is just stunning and very relaxing. The sea breeze is enough to make you cool. And the best is sleeping while you were lulled away with the calm waves sound. Breakfast is good. And Stella (the owner) was just lovely to let us check in early. :) The price is very affordable too. Will definitely stayed again here if we were to be back to Tioman :)

Room Tip: Seaview beach chalet is a must :)

We stayed at Swiss Cottage for two weeks in May this year and absolutely loved it. So much actually, that we extended our stay and made it our 'home' to contemplate the end of our 6 month trip through Asia.

It was exactly what we were looking for: a quiet, personal, simple place right by the beach. The grounds are beautiful and it's clear a lot of love and care continues to be put into the place by the lovely owners Stella and Richard.

We stayed in the simplest room type - the Longhouse fan room. We were very comfortable; with the fan on and a breeze from the ocean we didn't miss the aircon. While the room and bathroom are basic, they have all you need and are, most importantly, very clean. Room is cleaned on request during longer stays, which worked fine for us.

Despite its location by the beach and jungle, we never found any creepy crawlies in our room (bar the ever present mozzies). What you do have is a nice veranda overlooking the garden and patio doors opening up onto it. If you want a bit more privacy or room space, you may want to opt for the beachfront properties which are beautiful and come with a few more mod cons.

Mind you- if you are used to uber-organised resorts, this place might not be for you: not every tiny detail is perfect, but it's a place with personality and heart. We spent many days chatting away with other guests, staff or petting some of the resident cats. Swiss Cottage fosters a very open and welcoming atmosphere. At the same time, if you prefer keeping to yourself you can easily do that- neither staff nor cats will bother you.

Breakfast was tasty, filling and I enjoyed that we got a different dish every day.

The beach is beautiful (albeit not white) and very quiet; you can also cheaply rent snorkels or go on boat tours with the friendly Wasabi exploring the area. Diving with the on-site Tioman Dive Center was also fantastic (think turtles, reefs sharks and professional staff).

While the Island is pretty quiet (don't expect a big choice of nightlife), you can find some good local restaurants in walking distance to Swiss Cottage. Alternatively try ABC for some pizza; Swiss Cottage can easily call a taxi if the 40 min walk doesn't appeal. Tioman is a gorgeous place that has retained its friendly, laid-back feel. Unless you're on the ferry you probably won't see hordes of other tourists, at least not when you stay in Swiss Cottage.

Overall Swiss Cottage was the perfect place for us- if you're looking for similar things it's a great choice. We'd love to come back!

Stayed in the longhouse chalet. With wooden floors and walls, it's not the best place for "couples" and late night activities with friends in the room or at the balcony (complained by my neighbour for talking to loud). However the place is nice and friendly. Very close to Tioman Dive Centre which is very convinient for divers.

Stayed for seven nights and loved the setting. Our beach chalet with fan was about 20 metres from the sea, where we enjoyed some great snorkelling.

The room had a comfortable double bed and a fan. We didn't feel the air con room was required as we expected there to be enough breeze from the sea to keep things cool, which was the case.

The chalet had a large verandah with a table and two chairs - like a previous poster mentioned - cushions on the chairs would be welcome - however no big deal. The view across the excellent beach to the turquoise sea was really beautiful and when we weren't snorkelling or swimming we spent most of our time just sitting here.

Breakfast was included and whilst quite light was always tasty and changed each day. Roti canai, banana pancakes, toast and eggs - just some of the daily dishes. Coffee, tea and fruit also included. This was all served from a breakfast/reception area -which could also be used at other times of day just to chill at. There was a fridge here too where you could purchase cold drinks (water, 100 plus, beer etc) and then note down what you had taken on a board, with the bill added up on check out. This overlooked the central area of the guesthouse, full of plants, flowers and trees - very lush and with the ocean in view just beyond, it created a very peaceful and atmospheric environment.

Free wifi provided too, this tended to work best early morning and evening - probably high usage slowing it down during the day. When it did work the speed was good. The owners Stella and Rich are friendly, helpful people - we appreciated their assistance on a few matters!

Having walked along the beach (which is generally very quiet - just what we were looking for) and passed all the other accommodations on tekek beach - Swiss Cottage definitely looked the best, and if we return to Tioman one day, we'd stay here again.

We stayed in one of the bungalows, right on the beach. The room was clean, basic and just about big enough for two adults and bed for a child. It is fronted by a nice big balcony yards from the sea with a couple of chairs and a good size table (a couple of cushions would have made those chairs a tad more comfortable). But overall lovely setting. The other bungalow is attached and we were fortunate not being used, otherwise it would be a bit intrusive, ideally you would take both.

The grounds are lovely, very quirky, and a small central reception/dining area has a fridge with beer, water and soft drinks on an honesty system, and allowed guests to store fruit, wine etc somewhere cold. We found the breakfasts just fine - eggs, french toast nicely presented (could add fruit - we bought our own) but very relaxed. Music is played here constantly, which we could semi-hear from the bungalow, after a couple of days this did begin to grate a little.

There is a dive shop right on site although we did not use it other than to rent snorkels.

The location is great; it is the last place south of town, so very quiet. Beach is lovely and a short walk on the road behind brings you to a number of restaurants offering fresh fish, BBQ and Chinese and Malay dishes. Food was good and of course (for UK tourists anyway ) very good value. A couple of places had a system where you picked out you fish, squid etc and it was BBQed for you right there.

There are also shops to buy beer and decent wine at tax free prices.

Just along the beach towards town is a very funky little beach bar, seemingly built out of bits of driftwood they found, a great place to hang out for a few cold ones and reasonable food.

You can snorkel right off the beach, not fantastic snorkeling, but nice enough.

A great asset is the staff; they were attentive and helpful and fixed the couple of things we needed
quickly. They create a very laid back and friendly atmosphere.

Overall a lovely place, not luxurious, but great value for us and if we came back to Tioman we would return.
