Stayed for two nights recently in a garden-view air-con chalet. Not quite sure why the place gets such favourable reviews - it's certainly quiet, nice if you like lots of cats around you, and the chalet interiors are one step up in terms of quality - not necessarily cleanliness or facilities - from some of the other Tioman resorts. But so too are the prices - MYR 130 (£26 / $40) per night seemed quite steep (relatively) especially as the breakfast was very modest (big spoon of grey porridge with a plate of tasty fresh fruit salad one morning, plus coffee from an urn). The staff are friendly enough and it's definitely a quiet place, as it's right at the end of the main Tekek strip, just before the road heads uphill. I walked to the resort with my wheeley-bag luggage from the airport and that took 10-15 minutes. Tekek is a good part of the island to stay at if you want to feel you are close to the locals, rather than being at a tourist resort (such as Salang). But the other side of that is that there's not much around - just one bar along the beach, and a few eating places and mom-n-pop shops The island's only ATM is just across the track from the airport. I can see the appeal of Swiss Cottage for those who are in Tioman solely or primarily for diving (the dive shop is part of the grounds) and for those who want somewhere quiet and off the beaten track, but overall it didn't really do it for me. Next time I'll be back to Salang again I think.
