Lorraine and I have walked past this restaurant several times on one of our beach walks and recently we decided to treat our two daughters to a fine dining experience. The restaurant has a beautiful setting. We sat at a table that overlooked the garden and the sparkling Mare Nostrum as the Romans liked to call it. On a baking hot day we watched the shallow surf run up the golden sandy beaches and blessed the air conditioning in this delightfully spacious dining room. The staff were courteou and very efficient allowing their service to match the pace of our dining.

The quality of the cuisine matched the setting and for lovers of fish and shellfood this restaurant really is a must. My wife and one daughter had squid rings as a starter. This is a favourite of Lorraine's and it registered highly on her Richter taste scale. I had the local Xato salad which is one of the best I have eaten to date. For mains I had grilled fish which was superb, one daughter had Tuna as Lorraine devoured Gambas wrapped into small parcels with tender delicious Sole, the only disappointing dish was the monkfish which was quite tough, it is a meaty fish and none of us are that experienced in eating it. A fascinating part of the dining experience was watching the Catalans at the other tables; one couple were celebrating a wedding anniversary and a larger group someone's birthday. I am always impressed at just how much food the locals can put away at Lunchtime even if it's a special occasion. Both parties were highly complimentary about the numerous dishes they were served "Molt bé " being a popular refrain. I have fallen deeply in love with Catalonia, the delightful Catalans their restaurants and their cooking.

The postres trolley was very large and we turned it away as our two courses were substantial, the Catalans didn't and it was much lighter when it was wheeled past us. To complete the afternoon Lorraine and the girls walked through the surf into town a delightful way to compliment the excellent cuisine.

The restaurant is in stunning settings, surrounded by beautiful flowers and a wonderful sea view.
The restaurant itself is classicly set out and has a very calm ambience.
The majority of our food was delicious, the hake for main was superb. However, my monk fish was very overcooked to the point it felt like I was chewing cotton wall.
The food is expensive and if it wasn't for the beautiful setting I would say it's very over priced!

La Cucanya location on a rocky outcrop and the appointment of the restaurant gives it a great potential marred by poor quality control in both food and etiquettte. the latter was most dissapointing for a restaruant that would like to be upscale. After a visit to Biarritz, France we were shocked by some of the clientele here who were seated next to us wearing beach attire even carrying the beach umbrella. Her bikini covered wtih dening short with a bib contrasted with the well dressed ladies and families around. The male even covered his shoulder with a beach towell. A most appropiate move for a beachside tapas bar Not a formal restaurant Then there is their pricing related to the quality. They are high considerint their items are not original and unevently presented, Very good for the hake, practically sloppy for the sole with shrimps.
The desserts are too sweet and lack fresh fruit, even for summer, and their tiramissu was some sort of sponge cake soaked with liqueur.
The service was very good and friendly but claimed to be powerless about displays of sloppyness in the dress of some customers resocnizing it is no good for their imagine that they have been trying to improve.
We have visited the restaurant several times due to its location and even take visitors when we are in Spain. Yet, it is getting worse as their food offering fail to improve and the prices are out of order.
Their wine list is good annd contrast to the lack of offering in beer limited to one brand that would be sent to the gutter in Belgium or Germany We got better food and environment in Biarritz at similar prices and location.

We returned to La Cucanya after a year and are impressed by the consistency in quality and service. The traditional, local dishes still on the menu but also in tune with time with some new dishes and fresh menus.
Very flexible service. Very concerned as we thought one of the dishes overly salted. They immediately insisted on offering us a new or alternative dish.
We also appreciated the easiness in finding gluten free dishes. Well marked in the menu they also offered other dishes being prepared without gluten. Anyone suffering from a food intolerance can appreciate what this means in terms of enjoyment.
I can warmly recommend a visit that won't be a flavour of the month, but an earnest commitment to offering quality in all aspects.
