“Good holiday”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

We had a great week here in July 2013. Our family of 2 adults and 2 kids (10,8) enjoyed the pool and facilities. We booked with EuroParks and chose to pay extra for cleaning at the end, which meant we weren't hassled to clean or get a deposit back. Reps were ok but seemed a bit tired of it all.
The live shows were amazing and we enjoyed heading up to the communal area after dinner for the mini disco with friends.
The restaurant was uninspiring with tapas, we're not fussy eaters but didn't enjoy the food,
The takeaway was like Fawlty Towers, with two inept servers. It took 45 minutes for 2 pizzas and 4 fries.

We hired a car through Europarks and the service was fantastic. We were collected from the airport, dropped off at the van and the car arrived as arranged, then we were taken back to the airport. It took all the stress out of the transfer.

The vans are pretty good- the double bed was awful but the rest of the facilities were fine. Friends who took the upgraded caravan explained their mattress was better (they had previously stayed in the same van and agreed about the bed).

We went to Sitges on a day trip to the beach, which we found nicer than Vilanova, where eating out can be expensive,

All in all a great, stress free holiday where the kids can go off and find an activity in the safety of the park.

Really wonderful site, ideal base to either stay and relax or for getting about sightseeing. A bus trip or half hour walk away from Vilanova I la Geltru but the buses run half hourly and once you get the hang of where to disembark, a short walk away from the town centre or you can be dropped off right on the beach. The site itself is so clean with lovely pool areas. The shop is reasonably priced as is the restaurant/bar. I struggle to find fault really. We travelled as couples but we're visited by family who live nearby who have three young children. They were so impressed they have been back for the day again since!

Room Tip: We chose a small caravan just as a base to stay in. Ideal for us but would choose bigger accommodati...

Lovely week here, 27 degrees plus each day in October half term, really convenient for barca or reus airports, lovely site with good facilities, use the on camp supermarket, it makes little difference to go looking elsewhere! We are looking forward to coming back again.

We have recently returned from a fabulous late season holiday in vilanova parc near Barcelona . The welcome from Keith and Helen the europarcs reps is great and there knowledge of the area is invaluable .
We travelled with friends and had 7 children between the ages of 17 and 7 . The site is very well maintained and in a lovely wooded are .
We hired cars as we wanted to see the area however the bus and train service is good .
I would highly recommend the restaurant at the site.
Even though it was late season we had fantastic weather and would definitely go back again ,

We have been on holiday with Alfresco before (Altomincio in Lark Garda) so had high hopes for this park. As it was, it turned out to be a monumental disappointment. We have four small children, and there was next to nothing to entertain them on site. The site has 1400 pitches, but only two very small, and poorly equipped play parks. Neither had anything for our two youngest kids aged 3 and 1 (not even a baby swing), and even the two eldest (5 and 7) were bored after five minutes. The fact that the 'main' playpark had a gravel surface was also a worry, and my five year old daughter's knees bear testimony to that. We were picking gravel out of them for at least a day after a fall.

The caravan itself was ok (a Vivaldi Luxe) - spacious enough and clean, but it backed directly onto a sawmill with work that started at 7am every day with a noisy siren and continued on until late in the evening. Not ideal. The kids pool was poor - no slides, no water games, no nothing. It was also within very close proximity to the deep main pool, and it was on more than one occasion that I had to chase after my three year old who was careering towards the big pool with abandon. I wish I could say that there were lifeguards keeping an eye on everything, but alas no. Yes, they were there, but they always seemed preoccupied in chatting to their friends and on one notable occasion he was too busy holding up a dead rat/mouse for all to see before ceremoniously dumping it in a nearby rubbish bin to rounds of applause. Nice.

Which brings me on to the feral cats. Yes, I'm sure they do a reasonable job of keeping said rats/mice at bay, but good lord the place is overrun with them (cats). As someone who is allergic to cats this is not ideal. They have no fear - right up onto your decking every night, creeping round your legs looking for food. Yuck.

Caravan/child security was the worst issue for us. The caravan locks from the inside with only a turn of a snib, which is half way up the door. Two nights into the stay, we were woken up at 3am by our five year old, who told us that she had woken up to discover that her sister was not in the bedroom any more. Cue hysterics on our part. Running about outside on the site screaming her name, I then found our three year old daughter, in her pj's, wandering around in the dark two roads up on site. She had managed, very easily, to open the door and let herself out. I dread to think what could have happened to her. At the very best she could have been lost (which in fact she was) but at worst, dear God, it doesn't bear thinking about. I am going to contact Alfresco customer services direct about this as it is so serious, but I think its important that the lack of security is known to all. As it was, for the remainder of the holiday we had to drag the table and chairs over the door at night so that we would hear her if she tried to perform another escape routine again.

The site is really more suited to those over a certain age, and indeed it was full of retired people, most of whom you got the impression were practically living there. As my husband said, if you are a retired Bond villain (think of the cat situation) then its probably fine. The supermarket was a joke- hardly ever open (it closed before the earliest time of check in with Alfresco) and very badly stocked, I think a previous reviewer who said it was well stocked must have been at a different store to me. No nappies, no female sanitary products (both of which we found ourselves with an urgent need for), which again lends credence to my view that it is a park which is primarily designed for those over a certain age. The restaurant was ok, but overpriced. The laundry, or' Bugaderia' as it is known, was staffed by possibly the rudest senora in the Costa Dorada. It closes at 8pm of an evening, and my two loads had finished at 7.45. As I am emptying them, she starts shouting in Spanish and pointing to her watch. I gesture that I am hurrying and that it is only 7.50pm, and she grabs my arm and hauls me to the sign on the door, then starts making gestures about needing to go to sleep, which if you ask me, is half the problem with Spain. If they spent half as much time working and being productive as they do sleeping, we wouldn't be having to constantly bail their economy out. But that's another story.

Vilanova itself has very little to commend it. It is an industrial town and it shows. We had to go to Salou almost every day just to be able to find something half decent to do.

Suffice it to say we won't be back to Vilanova. It was not a happy holiday - my eldest was crying half way through, saying he was bored and wanted to go home, a sentiment which I was close to sharing. We will probably holiday with Alfresco again (subject to being satisfied about the caravan security issue) because when all is said and done their holidays represent reasonable value for money. We will just need to be very careful in terms of the location we pick.

Hi

I'm sorry to see you did not fully enjoy Vilanova Park, it is quite different to Altomincio Family Park and is a little bit more relaxed especially in low season.

I am also sorry to see the situation that you have reported, it must have obviously been a very distressing situation for you during your holiday. I have spoken with our overseas department regarding your concerns, the doors in our mobile homes have a turn lock which enables the door handle to be pushed down, it is classed as an emergency exit so has to be opened in 3 movements. We do also provide a safety gate that can be placed at the entrance to the wooden decking.

It is a shame but in low season many campsites run a lower amount of facilities and on reduced opening times. We are sorry you did not fully enjoy your time there and we do hope to see you again - we have a very helpful call centre who will be more than happy to provide advice on different campsites that you may enjoy.
Kind Regards,
the Al Fresco team

We stayed here for two weeks in September/October with Thomson Al Fresco. The caravan was well situated and close to all the amenities. It was well laid out and equipped. We especially liked the fact that it had a BBQ. We had no problem with the wi fi (apart from during a thunderstorm!) but only used it for email and web browsing.
This is a great site, but it is huge and the pitches are very close together. However everyone seemed to respect each other's privacy and it was actually one of the quietest sites we have ever stayed on.
We had our car to get out and about, however the availability and frequency of the bus service from the camp entrance means a car is not essential.
The supermarket on site was obviously more expensive than in town but not ridiculously so. It was well stocked and had a great range of products (even gluten free) and the in store bakery is great. It is open typical Spanish trading hours. If you want to shop in town the nicest supermarket is a brand new Lidl, much nicer than the nearby Hiper Simply.
Villanova is an ordinary working Spanish town , but it has a lovely beach and a long flat promenade and you actually feel as though you are in Spain which is not always the case in some resorts.
We would certainly go there again and would definitely recommend Al Fresco accommodation on the site.

We currently hire a cabin from Europarks , long term, on the Vilanova Park. the site is of exceptional quality with everything needed for a holiday on site. it is very clean, quiet and secure. Europarks staff are of the highest quality and nothing is too much trouble 24/7, the cabins well appointed and of good quality, complementing the superb standards expected. cars are well accommodated, buses available at the main gate for the local town for Barcelona and the Airport. We have toured Europe for many years, this is the best site ever, highly recommended.
