We stayed for 4 days in July, we enjoyed our stay last year (september) so we decided to return for a few days of relaxation and quality time together (after 3 days of walking in sweating in Rome :-)).
We enjoyed this stay very much as well and we love the hotel as it has a lot of good things going for it, even though it also has a few weak points. It might not be a 'true 5*' but if you consider the prices they charge, I consider it good for the price.
We stayed all inclusive and we found it to be very good value for money again.
I e-mailed the hotel a few days before arriving to request a room close to the room we had last year (because we found the location very convenient) and they allocated us the room next to that one, very nice. We were also given a bottle of cava and some chocolates in the room for being loyal to the hotel. These little things always make a difference!
The room was as expected (room 501). Not overly luxurious but very spacious, all rooms have two doubles of 1,20m wide. We both love the beds and we slept very well. The air conditioning actually works very well (this is not the case in all hotels!) and the room was always nice and cool. Everything was clean, the bathrooms could do with an update but they are large and everything you need is there, including a double sink. A huge tv (among the largest we have seen in a hotel) with many tv channels in HD (unfortunately no BVN like last year) for the ones that like to watch tv while being on holiday ;-)
Most of the staff members were very friendly (an improvement compared to last year), even though some (a young woman at the pool bar) could do with some training. This is what happened: Our flight home was only leaving in the night so we decided to extend our all inclusive untill 4pm for an aditional 15€ each (so we could have lunch and a few more drinks in the afternoon). When I ordered drinks at the pool bar about 3pm, the young woman at the bar insinuated that we were abusing the all inclusive system as we were no longer registered in the room that I gave her (obviously other people had been checked in already after we checked out) so she didn't want to give us the drinks. She kept on saying 'NO' and she insisted that we go to the reception to clear this out (she could have phoned the reception herself because she had a phone right there). This left a bit of a bad taste, especially because she didn't apologise after we proved her that we extended our all inclusive untill 4pm. Not a big thing and it didn't really affect our stay but still...
Reception staff was very friendly and professional, the check in went smooth and a glass of cava was offered. Restaurant staff was all friendly and professional as well. Drinks were brought to the table during all meals (the house wine and cava are very decent quality and all soft drinks are bottled btw.) and tables are allocated after entering the restaurant. During all meals the atmposhere is very relaxed and that is one the reasons we decided to return to this hotel (no chaos, no kids running around and there is a lovely outside terrace to enjoy all meals and even inside it feels like a 'real restaurant' opposed to the 'canteens 'that many hotels have). We found that the food had improved a bit, compared to last year. A decent selection of warm food and salads (not the best we have seen but very acceptable) and with a lovely selection of desserts (one of their stronger points). The 'fruit fly' problem from last year at the salad bar was also solved. The themed nights were better than last year and there is now a choice of eating in 3 different restaurants if you are on all inclusive, without any supplement (even though we didn't do this, because we like to sit outside and the a la carte restaurant didn't have a terrace).
The all inclusive is good value, with many branded drinks included. We love the lower pool and bar with the amazing sea view terrace, they play some lovely chill out music there too (not the tacky beach disco that you hear in most hotels). All pools were clean and one is heated to 30°C, they are working on the 'worn out sun bed' problem as we saw new sunbeds being brought every day during our stay. Cleanliness around the pools is still a bit of a problem as the area doesn't get swept often enough (this should be done everyday, not every 2 weeks..). We didn't see this happen once and the same dirt (leaves and palm fruits on the ground everywhere) was there during our whole stay.
Unfortunately the Lanz beach club (the lower beach bar) wasn't open anymore and this was one of the places that we loved so much during our last stay. A dissapointment.
We love the location of the hotel and we love Puerto Calero but you should be aware of the fact that this is NOT a party destination! There is no real beach to speak of but we love the hotel jetty in the sea.
From all the all inclusive hotels in Lanzarote that we have stayed at (H10 Rubicon Palace, Costa Calero hotel, Dream Gran Castillo and the Hesperia) I think that the Hesperia is now our favourite if I look at the' full package' so we would definitely consider returning a 3rd time.
