“Found a good one at last”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

We have been looking for a resort and hotel in the Canaries that we like and can go back to when desperate to escape UK weather. We have found it. Puerto Calero is small with several restaurants and bars facing the Marina and a nice 15 minute walk along a nice wide path. The Hotel is 5 star with a good buffet although we booked Bed and Breakfast but next time we may go All Inclusive.
We had booked a Mountain view room but upgraded to sea view for €10 per room per night as the sea and pool views are well worth it.
The only negative is the wifi. The free option is slow and only powerful enough to do the very basics and kept cutting out. There is a faster and more reliable option at €5 a day but feel at 5 star this should be free.

Room Tip: Go for a 4th or 5th floor facing the pool/sea at the far end i.e. Room 573

This hotel is just another example of why hotels need an independent rating system that isn't decided by the travel company you book with or another biased source.
Myself & my partner (30 & 33) booked a sea view room here for 3 nights. It was alright - we really can't rate it more than 'average' as there were just too many factors making it more a 3 star hotel than a 5.
The lifts on our side of the hotel were out of order during our whole stay.
Only one pool was slightly heated - the others were near freezing
Staff members in the bars around the pool were often abrupt & service sloppy
The hallways were tired looking and more 'Butlins' than luxury 5 star
The hotel is a taxi ride away from any atmosphere - the hotel ambience was more 'The Shining' than anything else

With all this in mind the outdoor pool areas were quite tropical looking and the buffet breakfast was varied and interesting. And they gave good spirit measures - although they needed to - to take your mind off the let-down this place sadly turned out to be.

If you're a young couple wanting at least some energy and atmosphere (not talking 18-30's, though!) and wanting a really impressive and actual 5 star experience - then don't come here!

We stayed for 6 nights in the Hesperia Lanzarote, at the end of March/ beginning of April 2014

We did not find in our research , neither on-line nor in any guidebooks, any ( Boutique style ) suitable hotels on Lanzarote but from the websearch the Hesperia Puerto Calero looked the best. We booked it as part of a package deal with Monarch.

In fact it was better than what the website promised. It is set up very spaciously with lots of different levels. After a week we know now all the short cuts…..

We decided to go for half board, instead of breakfast only, which was the right decision.

Breakfast was very well organsied with lots a choice. In the evening there was always something which was worth trying so it did the thing and allowing us to stay in. Food in general on Lanzarote still '' hearthy '' but the Hesperia tries to be, succesfully, a bit more refined.

We also tasted various Spanish wines ( best to avoid the Lanzarote ones ). The waiting staff turned out to be very helpfull in advising here, clearly proud of this part of their Spanish heritage and culture. The wines were very reasonably priced.

The service is a bit off and on but never in an unpleasant way. The younger members of staff clearly have to learn the tricks of the trade.

The Spa, not visited by the writer of this review, is supposedly very nice and large as well.

The bed in our bedroom ( Standard room ) was huge and had a fantastic matras. Also there was enough storage but the bath room a bit old fashioned. This is clearly not facelifted yet while other parts of the hotel have been refurbished already.

Do not forget to go to the bar downstairs which has sun till late. A great way to conclude your active day time activities.

Food quality and variety and cleanliness of room. Evening entertainment was also very good and varied from evening to evening. All the staff - reception , room ,restaurant , pool etc were so polite and helpful. Excellent custumer service. If we go to Lanzarote again we would definitely choose this hotel again.

Just spent two weeks on the island of Lanzarote, Two very windy weeks that is. We stayed at the Hesperia Hotel just outside Puerto Calero. It is in a beautiful location in the south of the island and is one of only two hotels in the area. The rooms were excellent and we only had problems getting them cleaned twice in a fortnight. We had to phone the reception to get the beds made. The food was all buffet style, and a bit hectic at peak times. But the quality was outstanding. the choice mind blowing. as very little of the food was labelled, you did not know what you were eating. Which is good sometimes. It is an adventure. The management decided to allow the inclusive guests access to the al carte restaurant for a limited time, but this was a shambles because they did not provide the staff to run it. 45 minutes for a first course, and running out of mains on many occasions was not good enough. very bad planning. In the evening the hotel provided entertainment, Magicians, acrobats, and piano players which were good but due to the location of the hotel, going out in the evening was not a viable option. Unless you had a car, which we did not !
Plenty of sun beds but at this time of year the pools are freezing, Only one was heated.
Excursions were very expensive as everything was so far away. And once you have been to one open air market you have been to them all.

Room Tip: Go for a SeaView room what ever it costs.

Just about to finish our stay at this wonderful hotel and I only wish we could stay for longer! The setting, the food and the rooms really are superb. The STAFF is helpfull and very polite.Special thanks to Amadeo for the great suggestions. Playa Quemada
The breakfasts, the Spa, the gardens and the service exceed that we experience elsewhere. We were looked after from the moment we arrive at the entrance to when we left in the taxi to return to the airport. I would recomend this hotel to everyone and great value for money.

Room Tip: The suite is with jacuzzi..
