Mkoani is a lovely, friendly town at the south west corner of Pemba. It is also (for the time being) the main passenger ferry port to Unguja (Zanzibar).
The Panorama Hotel is a clean convenient place to stay for visitors to Pemba. It has great views over Mkoani bay and of the jetty - so literally you can sit in comfort until you see the ferry arriving or preparing to leave.
In the past I remember enjoying cold beers on that terrace, but on my most recent visit there were only a few sodas in the fridge. Rahma - the housekeeper - explained it was because there were "no guests these days".
On the positives: convenient location for ferry port, great views, mature garden, freshly prepared meals (but no menu). Rooms clean, comfortable antique-style Zanzibar beds, mains power, air conditioning, private patio space, towels, toilet paper
On the negatives:
Wooden steps to the rooms were all broken and difficult to use especially when wet or in darkness or when carrying luggage. Patio doors not lockable (ie room is left unlocked), no toilet shoes, no soap, no beer!
