“Charming Inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

This was one of the highlights of our 2 week trip. Great room, excellent food, wonderful staff. They really wanted you to feel like you were staying in a small charming Inn and we were. We felt right at home. The dining room was excellent! Be sure to have breakfast there, it is a real treat!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Garden. You can see the hillside and watch the Alpine cows, great vie...

Having read numerous poor reviews of L’Auberge du Choucas, none of which were recent I might add, I admit to having had doubts about booking this hotel. I am always dubious of the number of stars appointed to European hotels as I do not think they necessarily meet the same criteria as those in the UK. However, as most of the accommodation in Le Monetier-des-Bains is of a lower star rating my husband and I decided to stay here.

I had requested a superior twin room on a high floor with bath, balcony and good view and this is exactly what I was shown to by extremely helpful staff who willingly helped with the luggage up the two flights of stairs. Being an old French building, I did not expect the rooms to be spacious but this was of adequate size and well appointed, with ample storage, t.v., mini bar, lamps, mirrors and a small sitting area, (Room 6). Having read about the tiny bathrooms, this came as no surprise but, again I found it to be well appointed with good toiletries, a small deep bath with shower over and storage space in the vanity unit cupboard. There was a very small separate w.c. I would have preferred a shower screen to a curtain and a higher powered hairdryer and also felt the towels and robes had seen better days.

The quality of the food was superb. We had half-board for 6 nights and every single meal was excellent, both in content, flavour and presentation. Breakfasts were of the same high standard, with a variety of fruit juices including freshly squeezed orange, fresh bread selection, good quality hams and cheeses. The dining room itself is beautiful room with a stone, vaulted ceiling and open fire and the service was both friendly and very efficient.

There is a very small bar area downstairs, and the reception area also has a tiny seating area. Apparently, there is also a lounge with sofas and large television but we did not see this room.
This auberge is a very old building and is furnished accordingly, which some might find rather dated, but it is this old ambiance which the owner is determined to preserve.

To summarise, we found the food excellent, the room perfectly adequate and the owner and her staff both helpful and friendly. I hope this review balances some of the previous negative and dated ones.

Room Tip: Room 6 had glimpses of the mountains from the balcony and morning sunshine.

We had dinner there a few weeks ago and it was excellent. The desert souffle was the best ever. Unfortunately, I left my jacket there and the staff was very helpful in getting it back. They mailed it to my home in the States. I would recommend that anyone in the area stop by and check it out.

Food nothing special not "gourmet" at all, very uncomfortable atmosphere, way to expensive for what you get.

We highly recommend this charming place to everybody. We, myself,my wife and two kids, age 7and 9 stayed there during a week in sept. 07. The service, extraordinary meals, including a sumptuous breakfast, the charming rooms, gracious decor, old ambiance, the quiet hotel itself, nestled in the heart of the ancient village, and then the extrardinary scenery and country surrounding the town, all and everything together provided an unforgetable experience; I insist in our opinion, and deplore the obnoxious comments of other tourists that I have read in tripadvisor. Some people just dont like dogs; some people are sold on modern innovations and fads, some people dislike the old charm, in favor of the modish, youth oriented ambiance
Anyway, this is not our case; We loved the Choucs and will surely return
PS : we noticed that free wifi access is available in every room ...

  • Liked — the excellent cooking, the charming atmosphere
  • Disliked — that we had to leave after one week!

My husband and I found this hotel through Alistair Sawday's "Special Places to Stay". We have often referred to that book and found it reliable and so were incredibly disappointed to find that the picture in the book was of a totally different (and much more beautiful!) hotel. An error, we were told. Unfortunately the description in the book also gave the impression of a classy, rural hideaway that would be an ideal venue from which to explore the Alps. It couldn't have been more wrong.

We like to research our holiday accommodation properly before booking and so also checked the website for this hotel. It was unbelievably disingenuous. It featured rosy pictures that gave the impression that the hotel was in the middle of nowhere with spectacular views of the Alps. It called the area "a paradise of pristine valleys" - this is shockingly inaccurate. The locality is dirty, unwelcoming, depressing and ugly.

As for the accomodation itself, the pictures of the rooms on their website must have been taken with a very wide angle lens as they looked generous on screen but were totally claustrophobic when we arrived!! There was barely room to turn around in the tiny bathroom. The view from the balcony overlooked air con ducts for the very close neighbouring properties. Needless to say, there was no view of anything remotely like a mountain, or any open space for that matter. All you could see were equally grotty properties packed in on either side of this dingy hotel.

The hotel took a deposit upfront for half of the cost of our stay. It wasn't a cheap venue and, combined with the descriptions we had read and the pictures that we had seen, we had reasonably high expectations. I asked if they had off-road parking and they said yes - it turned out to be a squalid alleyway to the side of the hotel. They had two revolting dogs that urinated up the side of our car within minutes of arrival. The accommodation fell woefully short of expectations in every way and cost far, far too much for what it had to offer.

Please do not be conned by the pretentious website that the owners of L'Auberge du Choucas have established because the location is a horrible, dingy town and the accommodation is 2/3 star at 4 star prices (no doubt with half paid up front because numerous disgruntled customers have tried to walk out without paying their rip-off prices!).
