I went to absolutely wonderful Mardin a few days ago and as my preference in my solo travels I stayed at a budget pension, this time at Sahmeran . I paid 60 TL for a room, upstairs that had two single beds and a private shower (that does not work properly).

First the advantages. This pension is run by Ali and his nephew Ilker, both wonderfull and helpful fellows. Their friendly attitude is very welcome to all visitors. Ali speaks good English however Ilker needs to learn the language fast. He has very limited interaction with the customers.

The pension is exactly 73 steps high up on the hill (almost standard for Old Mardin) so if someone has any mobility issues or is faint hearted this pension is not for them. A car can not come to the entrance so you will have to climb those stairs with luggage or if you call them in advance they will come and help you with luggage.

My room was nice. They are all named after towns in Izmir area. The room was called Gaziemir but the nicest room was called Balcova. The first night the shower was not working because the management forgot to turn the water heater on and the second night when I wanted to take a shower the water was very lukewarm, almost cold. No hot water showers. The electrical outlet at the wall near the bed is totally unoperational so my phone was not charged at all during the whole night. The room was only supplied with towels if you ask for them. Wifi only works downstairs at the lobby level. There is no A/C but a big fan in the room and an electrical heater for cold days. And to top it all the pension does not offer any breakfast and you have to walk down the stairs, go to the main street and find a bakery (Has Simit on 1st Street was great) for breakfast. There is no view from the pension but a nice small garden with some fruit trees. The management is talking about some renovations this winter.

In spite of these shortcomings, I recommend this pension especially for those single budget travellers who will have no issues climbing up the stairs. The service is very friendly, the prices are good, and the location of the pension is very good at Old Mardin.

Finally Mardin, Midyat and Hasankeyf are absolute must sees. This is the place in Turkey where all religions meet and create a wonderful culture.

Room Tip: For private bathrooms, choose a room upstairs at the hotel section. Balcova is the best room.

What an awesome little pension. I met many lovely people here and the setting of the place is lovely. My room was tidy and everything in working order, there was cay on tap and there is also water you can purchase which is handy as there are many steps to the pension! I felt at home here which as a solo traveller in eastern turkey can be a little difficult to find. The manager, Ali is a lovely guy who will do whatever to accommodate his guests.

we got off the bus in historic mardin and where amazed - what a wonderful town. the way to Sahmeran is easy to find as already on the main street many signs show you the way. sure it is accessible only by walking - read about mardin and you KNOW it is a historic city on a hilltop, nope - this doesn't mean it's on a highway. with a backpack a quite easy task and every step further up made us more and more happy, this is a gem. the Hostel / Pension sits amidst the old town and like the people used to live its rooms are set in the rock with vaulted ceilings. it is cool in the rooms, clean the entire place, friendly and relaxed. this place really made Mardin even more special. thank you to the crew and the new friends from Mardin and all over the world I met here. have a cay for me, please and sure enough -one day I will be back.

1st of all - be advised: not accessible by car! Not all all. You will have to walk a couple of steps anyway. Don't trust your GPS navigator. Worthless in Mardin. Don't repeat our oafishness.
The room itself - put in a nutshell: quite original and a bit vault-like, but not charmless.
Had a room upstairs. Be sure to get one with plenty of air supply - otherwise frowst-alert. Rooms and linens are in general satisfactorily clean.
Hosts speak pretty good English - the young lad even too much of it. WLAN works at least alfresco.
In total: value for money ratio = >1.

Room Tip: take a room with connection to the veranda
