I had a wonderful time at this museum. It is housed in a beautiful historic building and provides the perfect introduction to the history of Mardin. At the time of my visit (April 2014), there was also an exhibit of photographs of Turkey from the 19th century which was a real highlight. Highly recommended!

This museum is only a few years old, and the love that went into creating it is palpable. They have collected daily items from the area, tools and household items, things that could be lost to history if not treasured here. Photographs show the costumes of the various ethnic inhabitants. As you see from the photo of the workman, you could almost believe that you are watching a live person. Downstairs are temporary exhibits. When we visited we saw photographs taken throughout the 20th century from all over Turkey. I highly recommend visiting. The archaeological museum in town has fantastic pieces, but we found the city museum very moving.

this is a Mardin city museum that tells the story of the city and the traditions. 3 religions with different ethnic backgrounds lived in peace for centuries. one of the displays in the museum shows how all religious holidays were celebrated together. During easter muslims baked pastries together with the christian families - it is sad that today when we are supposedly more enlightened than our ancestors that they were the ones who were ahead of their times
