Before we went to hi! Montemar we read the reviews, some scared me and some didn't. Let me be clear, hi montemar is simple, you get what you pay for. Period! We were in block E which was brilliant. Sure the kitchen was outdated, our beds were soft, the fan on the ceiling was okish (but i'm used to warm weather). But its ibiza for goodness sake! The hippy island? It says it all so stop complainig, if you want roomcleaning everyday and "hotel" treatment, go to a hotel! We had a lovely time. Ive seen much worse. If you are a wise person, than you should be smart enough to know bits about the country you're going to.

we have just returned from a weeks 'experience' at the these apartments. we are a family of four, with children aged 10 and 6, and booked via Thomas Cook. Yes, i had read the reviews before we went, and i was expecting basic accomodation with chips with every meal. i was even prepared for the steps and hills (just look at the address above c/kilimanjaro! and the surrounding roads are Everest and Mont Blanc - true!).

But i wasn't prepared for the mould, mildew, grime, dirt, insects, loose wires etc and the general datedness of the apartments. We stayed in room I03, ground floor, with a large terrace but with broken and moudly wicker chairs, and saved from another 100 steps for the top floor apartments. The apartment was basically falling apart; the bathroom had no window or extractor fan, and the ceiling and grouting was covered in patches of black mould. The smallest bedroom had exposed wires out of sockets and a ceiling fan just about hanging on to the ceiling.

The kitchen was basic, but thankfully there was a working toaster and new microwave, and they did bring us a kettle, but again with growing mould on the sealant strips behind the tiles. Everything had to be kept in the fridge or it would be covered in ants. We booked SC with the plan to buy the AI on arrival (we have travelled this way many times before and find it is a much cheaper option than buying the AI with the agent beforehand, especially with hotels often offering very cheap children's prices). The lovely lady at reception let us 'try before we buy' and thank god - it was inedible - and we are not fussy eaters, so ended up SC and eating out every night.

we did ask to transfer rooms and were shown others, but stayed as the alternatives were 1 bedroom and the other 'beds' were a padded cushion on a concrete slab in the lounge, with no fan. we also asked to transfer accomodation, but was told by the rep there was limited availability on the island and we may end up in a 18-30 party hotel and we would have to get ourselves there by taxi and pay the extra accomodation costs. So.... we stayed for the week....

i like to give a balanced review, so here are the positives:
Friendly staff, especially in reception
Maintenance guys did attempt to fix the faults, but these are beyond short term repair.
The pool was quiet and you could always get a lounger no matter what time of day (the manager told another guest the hotel was full but people weren't choosing the stay in the complex)
Hence, there was limited entertainment by the pool. we saw an occasional game of table tennis or volleyball being organised, but the apathy of the guests, lead to little 'atmosphere', and half way through the week the lifeguard banned lilos after an incident in another hotel, and then it rained for the last two days, so we couldn't even sit by the pool (Oops i was meant to be on the positives, but can't blame the hotel for the weather!!)
There was no shallow end to the pool (shallowest was 1.4m, except for the toddler pool), which meant my 6 yr old couldn't stand up anywhere, so was forced to swim!! (this may be a negative for some people!)
The resort of cala llonga is beautiful, quiet, with lovely restaurants and friendly people (just be careful to check your bill and change in some of the spanish bars and shops).
Check out Mister Cairos show bar for a great night out and Flippers restaurant for amazing meals, but stay somewhere else.................

The climb up to these shacks is called Everest/ Kiliminjaro, enough said. The 113 steps up to the top shacks are no joy with heavy suitcases, and no joy for the rest of the sentence. An apartment the size of a broomcupboard complete with thick dust, pigeon poo, ants and no air conditioning puts "Elle's Belles" to shame. Don't be taken in by the photo's it resembles a 1960's council estate. This place made our holiday a nightmare. You have been warned. Wish i'd taken earlier reviews seriously. Thomas Cook - shame on you.

Room Tip: Don't even choose the place!

I hadnt expected much from these apartments after reading the reviews on here, however, my stay wasnt as bad as some.
We had to wait an hour for our room. Wasnt a problem, sat round the pool having a few drinks whilst kids got in the pool.
The apartments are very basic, we had two bedrooms, one quite large with a great ceiling fan. The 2nd room the ceiling fan was a bit naff. The problem with this place was the 'hill' which wasnt bad at all however, this did cause you to get warmer after the walk back from town so when you eventually reached your apartment at night you were boiling!!! Air con would have made all the difference.
Massive balcony - which we spent most our time on when at the apartment.Kettle/toaster/microwave. Yes the apartment is dated but ours was kept very clean. Towels changed every other day and bedding changed a few times during our stay.
We were s/c but did sample the food and im glad we didnt go all inclusive as the thought of eating there every night....
The pool was very deep, and i did see it being cleaned.
You had to be up early to get a sunbed as the guests on all-inclusive would bring their towels down when they went to eat and i didnt see some til midday. However we always managed to find 2.
The entertainment guys were ok, they arranged some pool activities, which was great for the over 10s. They were some dry activities too.... darts, football, shooting. There is a dodgy table tennis table and 2 pool tables.
All in all.... we didnt pay alot for the stay, it got us away from the crap weather here! Glorious weather, we met lovely people not sure whether i would rush back though. Ask for a low block if you do book here :)

Room Tip: Ask for a low block but you will get a naff view

we have just returned from the Montemar, and having read all reviews before we went, everything was as we expected. Yes it is built on a hill, yes it is best suited for families, yes it is getting on a bit but you get exactly what it says on the tin! The Montemar doesnt claim to be 4*, it doesn't claim to have aircon or anything like that, some people go there with higher expectations, the plain fact is, the Montemar is great for families, its staff are polite and helpful, the pool is fantastic and the food suited us all fine, again not 4* but we didn't pay for 4*!! At the end of the day, we enjoyed this holiday, the kids made so many friends and we got to relax and know they were happy and safe, no stomach bugs, no ear infections, no being annoyed by mossies. So put simply, if you don't like hills, if you dont like cheap tacky mini discos, or you dont like the thought of chips with every meal, don't go. But if you want a good family hotel that's not full of loud drunk teenagers, and who's staff are fantastic then go to the Montemar

Room Tip: if you don't like hills ask for rooms in blocks A B C, anything above and you need gas and air!

Hi Montemar was probably a lovely place to stay 30 years ago. Now it is only fit for the bugs and vermin who will share this accommodation with you.

The bathroom and kitchen were decaying and filthy, the sofa bed set on a hard concrete slab was a joke and the bedrooms were just sweat boxes.

It costs to use the safe, hire a much need fan, hire a toaster etc etc. Thank goodness we didn't go all inclusive. I wasn't bothered about there being no sunbeds available as the pool area was dirty with loud piped music.

On a positive note, the towels were changed regularly ( good job as we needed to place them on the floor in the bathroom to mop up the water during showers to avoid the bedrooms being flooded). Oh yeh, positives, the sheets were also changed and we all had a good laugh camping in Montemar

Cala Llonga is a lovely place and we all had a great holiday. Just don't stay in Montemar as it needs bombing !!!!

Room Tip: Don't go

I travel at least twice a year abroad and I can honestly say that this THE WORST apartment I have ever stayed in. I very rarely write reviews either, but have to warn people about this horrendous place. I normally check this site and take a view that some people are fussy, others are not, but I honestly think, the only way that you would find this place satisfactory was if your usual residence was something that resembles a cardboard box. I will list off all the specifics as to why I can justify the hotel as TERRIBLE:

APARTMENT

Bathroom - Mouldy floor tiles, filled with black gunge. Wooden panel in bathroom with rust dripping down into the bath. No extractor fan OR window in the bathroom. The smell that greats you in the morning is RAW SEWAGE! Rusty hole in the bath. Top layer of bath has come away to reveal an orange scum layer. Mould growing around the bath. Shower head not secure so spins around in a circle when turned on! Broken shower curtain. If you have asthma - terrible as had attack due probably due to mould. Location is at the back of apartment, so if someone uses the toilet, you would not want to be in the apartment anywhere, as the smell spreads especially with no window or fan. Half painted pipes with cobwebs as an extra addition. Rusty sink.

Kitchen - No dials on Hob. Microwave grey and black grime inside and on the buttons. Fridge desperately needing to be defrosted. Grime and dust on shelves. Cutlery that looks like it was produced in the bronze age.

Living room - TV that looked like it was made in the 1930s with two Spanish shopping channels and the other two channels as static. A non-working telephone. Smoke stained appliances that have turned cream rather than white. Sticky tape left on door frames where was once upon a time decorated...badly. Wonky light fixtures and mouldy pictures. Bed/sofa is literally on bricks and feels like a brick to lay on! Each one of the four chairs for the table was a different design. Table chipped on every side.

Bedrooms - Boiler in bedroom 1, so made it EXTREMELY HOT! Ceiling fan with a switch that visibly sparks when you change the setting. Missing cupboard door with no access due to a bed being in the way! View to the underside of a flight of stairs. Flaking paint. Mouldy plug sockets. Light fitting stuck on with sticky tape!

Patio - Floor tiles cracked. Actually cut my foot on one of them quite bad. Required medical attention. Staff at reception not bothered.

Other - Safe was about 75 years old with a broken LED display

Utilities in apartment - NONE! If you want anything you would normally get as standard ie a hair dryer, you need to pay. Everything listed below is what you have to pay for, for 1 week only:

- Fan (17 Euros) - absolutely necessary as NO AIR CON IN 36 degree heat! Although the fan is so bad, you have to hug it!
- Hair dryer (12 Euros)
- Iron (12 Euros)
- Toaster (Unsure of price) and the list goes on!

They will virtually charge you for anything that is normally standard in an apartment.

OUTSIDE THE APARTMENT AND AROUND THE POOL

- No access to drinking water, when I asked at reception where can I get drinking water on my first night I was told the vending machine, which was out of order for the whole duration of our trip!
- Pool had mould and mildew around edges. Did not want to touch as made me feel physically sick.
- Pool water so murky you cannot see the bottom of pool. Filled with what looked like dead skin and who knows what else.
- Got an ear problem from the pool.
- They thought it would be a good idea to 'clean' the tiles steps at 11.30 pm when people who had been drinking at night were climbing back to their rooms - yes climbing ,we were talking 100+ steps to the apartment, uneven and broken. Extremely dangerous and slippy with no warning signs.
- Bin room always left open, so you would constantly get the smell of hot bin. Nice.
- Bats for table tennis broken and only half a bat in some cases!
- Table tennis table unsteady and falls down every so often!

FOOD

- Breakfast the SAME EVERY DAY! no choice, no rotation. Greasy bacon, eggs and sausage. I'm sure I could get better food in a soup kitchen.
- Dinner found hair in my dinner and very little choice also. Very very poor food.

RECEPTION

- Every time I walked by reception, people were complaining about ants, sewage, asthma, steps and how they had failed their family by booking this place.
- Reception staff unhelpful and unwilling to assist.

LOCATION

- Quiet town, but hotel on the steepest part!!! Go here if you enjoy trekking up mountains in 36 degree+ heat on your holidays and want to pay a fortune on taxis if you wish to go anywhere with some life.

GOOD POINTS

- Leaving
- A couple of friendly barmen, just a couple.
- Leaving
- Nice people staying there to discuss how poor the place is
- Never ever having to go to Hi! Montemar AGAIN...EVER!
