We stayed at the Ilunion as a couple and found it to be really relaxed, immaculately clean and well equipped. The room was far more spacious than many hotels I looked at; we loved having the kitchen / dining / sitting area separate to the bedroom and our balcony was nice and felt private and not overlooked, unlike many hotels.
My only minor complaints about the room would be the shower, which was very low pressure and had extremely variable temperatures - freezing one moment and scalding the next, which we coped with but would have worried me if our children had been there. Having said that we'd definitely consider returning there with the kids another time as we really enjoyed our stay and it was very family friendly without being over-the-top entertainment and playgrounds etc.Only other grumble was that the twin beds in our room (pushed together to make a large double) had different mattresses. One was a lovely memory foam style one, but the other was very hard and completely different, which didn't make for the most comfortable night's sleep. A/C is very good (almost too good - we had to turn it off in the bedroom overnight as it was arctic! But very welcome after a hot climb up the hill)

The pool area is fantastic - lots of sun loungers, and it never felt particularly full or busy despite it being the summer holidays. There's a nice bar area with outdoor seating and a good range of ice creams. It would be nice to have menus available to see what snacks are available - we ended up not having anything but it would have been a nice addition. The big four poster bed style sun loungers looked brilliant, though we didn't manage to nab one! The pool itself is lovely, with shallow sections at both ends and divided off shallow sections for younger children. Do be aware that the pool is extremely deep in the middle - great for diving, but just take care with young children.

The dining room was clean and there was plenty of seating. The variety of food was good; it will always be a bit samey at a buffet I suppose but there was always a reasonable selection. Breakfast was a nice combination of fruit, cereals, breads, pastries, continental meats and cheeses, and hot options of bacon, eggs, sausages (I'd steer clear of the most English looking ones, they were pretty awful, but the more Spanish style ones were fine) etc. The juices are from a machine and not fresh juice - they taste more like squash, which was a bit disappointing, but teas and coffees were nice. We were half board and we felt that offered really good value as we didn't pay a lot more for it, so we ate at the hotel 2 nights out of 5 without feeling we'd wasted our money. The ambience could be a little better, especially in the evenings, where the lighting is pretty harsh so if you're after a quiet and romantic dinner, you're not going to get it there! But it was fine.

The staff were almost all extremely friendly - Maria and Julia on reception were lovely, and very helpful.

Yes, the hotel is up a steep hill from the main part of the town but it's a quiet road and if you just take your time it's not too bad. There are three supermarkets between the hotel and the town, all selling beach equipment, souvenirs and a decent range of food - the one closest to the top of the hill is probably the best one for food and drink selections and again it was great having a fridge in the room so we could buy our own beers and wines. As many others have done, we recommend buying a beach umbrella and mats at one of these supermarkets (about €8-9 for an umbrella and similar for mats - you'll save a fortune over renting, you'll use them lots, and they're very light to carry around) We'd also recomment a screw-in base (€1,95) for the umbrella or they'll blow away if it's at all windy!

Cala Galdana itself is a nice little area with plenty of shops and restaurants. It doesn't have that nightclub resort feel, so it's pretty relaxed and quiet, which we loved. The beach got very busy. We did a lot of walking over the Cami de Cavalls paths - the walk to Cala Macarella is great fun but it's hard going so a) don't wear flip flops and b) be very careful if you have young children, older people or anyone with limited mobility with you - it's rocky, steep, dusty and quite a long way, with masses of steps down to the beach at the other end (where there's a fabulous bar! Go for the Estrella damm beer, it's the best!)

In the other direction the beach at Cala Mitjana is just stunning, though it gets incredibly busy. Well worth the steps and the walk - again, take care with young children or anyone with limited mobility, as the steps up from Cala Galdana are pretty hard going, and the path down to the beach is steep and stony.

We did a Beach Explorer boat trip (brilliant fun) and hired a kayak (also great fun but don't go too far if you're not experienced or pretty fit!)

We'd definitely go back to the Ilunion and I would recommend it to others - it's not the height of luxury, but it's comfortable, clean and relaxed, and the pool area is really lovely. (Wfi is pretty good too!)

Room tip: If you're on floor 3 or higher, you'll have a lot of stairs to walk up!!

Would recommend this hotel for couples and small families who prefer a relaxed and easy paced atmosphere. The pool and restaurant were never too busy and the evening activites were intimate
The mini club and restaurant staff were very friendly and always in good spirits.
I think late June and early July were the optimal times to stay.

The Ilunion Hotel was really just what we expected, some reviews are a bit harsh. It is at the top of a hill but not that bad and does walk off the holiday calories! It is a little bit 'shabby chic' needs just a little bit of tlc but doesn't really affect your stay. The bathroom, living room and bedroom were all a good size, clean and had everything we needed, beds very comfy and the shower was great loads of hot water and really powerful, and rooms cleaned and tidied for us every day. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The breakfasts were fab.....really not to be missed and also served from 8.00 to 11.00 so a nice long time slot. The pool was really nice with a few large 4 posters sun beds along with the normal loungers and parasols, never a problem getting one. Car parking onsite and managed to get a spot on arrival in the afternoon.A very useful recycling box in the main reception for parasols, mats, buckets, spades, etc so you can leave yours at the end of your holiday or borrow some for the day (what a good idea). All in all a really fabulous stay and we will definitely be back.
