“Excellent value for money”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Returned yesterday from a week in this hotel and we were very impressed with the overall quality, particularly the cleanliness of the rooms and hotel in general. The food was very good (particularly if you keep to the freshly cooked and salads) and a good variety. If you expect 4* luxury at 3* prices you will be disappointed- so be realistic! The area is quiet so perhaps not suitable for teenagers, however if you enjoy walking there is a lovely walk into nearby Los Abrigos and for 1.50 euro catch a bus into La Medano for a nice beach, these two areas have a more Canarian vibe and have nice little tapas bars and are far less touristy than some areas of Tenerife. The staff were friendly and helpful and reception staff happy to give out bus timetables, book taxis and if you want to book golf the lady in the golf office speaks perfect English and is very helpful.

Room Tip: Request a room on 3rd floor or above for excellent views

I will review the hotel and then say a bit about the resort.

The Hotel is advertised as a 4* and this reflects the range of the facilities onsite, not the quality, which is a mistake some people make when judging a hotel.

The facilities include: small shop, hairdresser, Kids’ club, well organised entertainment in house 6 days a week during the day and kids disco, ball room dancing followed by professional shows in the evening (magic, reptiles, parrots, flamenco, owls etc.). well equipped free gym and indoor heated pool open 6 days a week, jacuzzi, main pool, toddler pool, toddler play ground, putting green, crazy golf, pool tables, air hockey, table tennis, boule courts, tennis/football, badminton/volley ball courts, pool bar (closed in winter), lounge bar, buffet restaurant, Canarian restaurant and Argentinean restaurant, free bus to Playa de Las Americas and Los Christianos. You can use the facilities in the apartments next door which includes two more pools, a laundrette (washers and driers) and a Diving school.

Pools
The hotel and apartments each have a main pool and a toddler pool and a Jacuzzi. All the pools are salt water and are not heated. Probably not a problem in summer but in winter they were freezing. Such a shame as the pools looked so inviting but no-one was in them. The free gym also has an indoor pool which is fresh water and is heated. Towels can be obtained for free from reception for a 10e each with free change every 2 days. There is also a fresh water, hot Jacuzzi but both my kids got conjunctivitis after putting the eyes under the water, so we didn’t let them use it again.

Kids Club
For ages 4 – 12 and open when the hotel is busy from 9:30am – 6pm. In winter they used the indoor pool to take the kids swimming to. Our kids 5 and 8 had a great time and made friends. In the evenings they do a mini-disco 6 nights a week and one evening they opened the club from 8pm to 10:30pm as well.

Food
Breakfast was a buffet from 8am – 10am with a range of hot food (proper baked beans!), cereals, bread, toast, cheeses, pastries, you name it. Plentiful and good.
Lunch and dinner are from 1pm to 3:30pm and 6pm – 9pm. At these meals the food is from a buffet, but the drinks are served by a waiter. We are vegetarian and were at time a little disappointed by the enthusiasm with which the chefs added meat leftover from breakfast to many foods that didn’t need meat or are not supposed to have meat in, such as mashed potato, ratatouille, minestrone soup, vegetable soup! Not everything is labelled fully either so meal times were a voyage of discovery, but we were always able to fall back on pizza and pasta if needed. I would have liked to have seen more Spanish/local dishes such as Cananrian potatoes, frittata and gazpacho, but they were only available once or twice in the 10 days. Christmas Day dinner was nice.

There are two other restaurants on site that are open a couple of nights a week and people on AI can use them too at a supplement of 3e per person, one is a Canarian restaurant and one is an Argentinean BBQ.

Bar
The only bar open in the winter is the lounge bar which is open from 9am – 1am. AI can use it from 11am to 11pm, outside of those times you have to pay. Drinks are served in glasses and in cups if you are drinking inside and in plastic cups if you are drinking outside, round the pool. This makes sense, to avoid children cutting themselves on broken glass, but some reviewers see this as a negative. The lounge area is very spacious and there are lots of places to sit and even a conservatory area. There is also a SAGA lounge. This is a room solely for the use of SAGA guests.

All Inclusive
All guests get issued with a credit card sized ID card with their photo on it which is needed at meal times and is also used to open the room. You will also only be served on drink per card at the bar, so if you are getting a round in for your group, you will need as many cards as you want drinks and obviously you can’t get alcoholic drinks with kids cards! I’d have preferred a bracelet system, but we’d still have needed a card for the room, so not a major inconvenience. Ice cream was served from 4pm onwards in the bar, but was available at meal times in the restaurant. AI includes all local brands and included bottles of wine with meals. If you want international branded drinks you can pay a supplement, but we were happy drinking all the local drinks. If you are thinking of going half-board, I’d seriously think about going AI as it includes lunch and all drinks. Drinks for those not in AI were expensive at 2e for ½ pint for instance. If you are not on AI then breakfast is 7e per person .lunch and dinner 12e per person. Under 12s 50% off.

Our room
We had a spacious family room with two wardrobes on the ground floor which consisted of a bathroom and two sofa beds and terrace on the lower level and a double bed accessed via a spiral staircase. The bathroom was equipped with two sinks and a bidet, hair drier and shower gel. The room had a mini-fridge and a TV which could receive BBC World News. The room had a safe which was 2e per day and 10e deposit for the key. The only negative thing was that we found 4 cockroaches in the room in our 10 days. We killed them each time so we know it wasn’t the same one returning! It didn’t bother us particularly as it’s a hot country and they’re inevitable, but I think 4 in 10 days is too many. Shame really because the hotel and grounds are kept spotless.

The guests
The guests at the hotel were predominantly French, then Brits and then a few Spanish and other nationalities. Some reviewers have complained about this, but if you don’t want to hear people speaking foreign languages, probably best to holiday in the UK only. The entertainment was always in English and Spanish and sometimes French as well, as the entertainment team were French. As I have mentioned, there is a SAGA lounge for Saga guests only. Some reviewers don’t like this, but I didn’t see it as a problem, why would it be? The age profile of guests ranged from babes in arms to elderly, it certainly wasn’t an old folks home as some have suggested. And the entertainment reflects the range, from mini disco for under 12s, to ballroom dancing to daytime activities and sports for the over 12s and adults.

The resort
The resort is flanked by two golf clubs and the taxi from the airport cost 12e, plus 1e per bag. The hotel is by the sea and a small beach but this is not a sandy beach, definitely not a bucket and spade beach. If you want a sandy beach, catch the free bus from the hotel to the other beaches. The hotel car park hosts a small market every Friday. The hotel is also next to a Marina, which is where the submarine safari tours go from. There is a small café and souvenir shop at the end of the marina and a small café at the entrance. There is a promenade that runs from the hotel along the coast which is a nice walk. There is a row of cafes, bars, shops and restaurants directly below the hotel on the promenade and more at the front of the apartments. There are two mini-supermarkets there too. There are small parades of shops, restaurants etc. through the resort but the main centre is the San Blas area, a 1 mile walk along the promenade where you will find a bigger supermarket, shops, restaurants, estate agents and a church. If you are self catering the nearest proper big supermarket we found was a 3 mile walk out of the resort, up by the motorway. Not a bad walk past all the golf courses, but probably best to get a taxi back if your bags are heavy! The nearest pharmacy and doctor are 0.5 miles from the hotel on the road to the motorway. The resort is on the flight path into the airport but it isn’t noisy. We had hand luggage only and the time from landing to be in our room was 30 minutes which was great.

The positives
The hotel has good facilities and the bar area is really lovely. The hotel is located in a ruggedly picturesque location facing the sea one way, with the mount Teide behind.

The negatives
The pools were a disappointment as they were salt water and not heated and the food could have been better. Cockroaches in the room were not pleasant.

Tips
Sit on the left hand side of the plane as you come to Tenerife as you get great views from about 45 mins from landing of Mount Teide. Sea view rooms also get the sun in winter.

Summary
Good hotel but needs to work on the cockroach problem. We will not return, but only because I love swimming in warm pools, not cold ones.

Hopefully, this is a comprehensive review and answers any questions you may have, but if you want to know anything more, please ask.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms also get the sun in winter

We have just returned from 1 week at THE AGUAMARINA GOLF HOTEL overall we found it very good. The rooms spacious and clean could be slightly upgraded, the food was good always lots of choice. Staff very helpful and always cheerful. The only thing i did not like was that the bar stopped serving at 11.00 pm on the all inclusive after that you had to pay I did feel that this should have been extended to 12.00 am on new years eve.

We booked this hotel for two adults and two teenager for over the the Christmas week. we were very disappointed to find absolutely nothing for teenagers. There is a kid club and 20minute eve disco for under 10's and 20minutes of evening ballroom dancing for over 60's, nothing at all for teens or young adults. If we had know that the hotel was mainly a Saga hotel with 85% of the guests over 60's we would never have booked it, we felt as if we was spending Christmas in a retirement care home, not a 4* hotel
The hotel it's self is very very rundown, it is in need of a complete refurbishment and up grade. I would grade this at a poor 3* hotel in need of attention, not the 4* luxury we expected, the rooms are large and kept clean with the look of a OAP residence. The beds are so so hard my husband had to visit the pharmacy to get stronger pain killers to ease the back pain he was waking up with each morning. The food was varied and although sometimes a strange mix we found something most days that suited us. The hotel laid on a lovely Christmas Day dinner with a large selection from smoked salmon to roast meats.
We booked all inclusive but the all inclusive bar only operated between 11am and 11pm ....you couldn't even get a soft drink before 11am, only water or coffee. When the all inclusive was open you had the choice of 1 type of beer, wine, gin, vodka, whisky, brandy all of which tasted watered down and not good at all also 2 ready made cocktails which were also very diluted both tasted of cheap sweet squash! There really was NO selection to choose from, You couldn't even get free bottled water until 9:30pm and you was only allowed 1 small bottle each if you wanted water before that you was given a plastic cup full
The animation team worked really hard but they need to translate EVERYTHING into other languages to accommodate ALL guests ( unless you understand French it was hard to understand anything) and to be honest they only seemed to be interested in the French guests apart from saying the odd hello to all other nations that was all the contact they gave.
The location of the hotel was not good, it was on its own with only a handful of bars/restaurants/shops within walking distance, (and i do mean a handful) the hotel run a bus service to the near by busy towns 3times a day but spaces were very limited and you had to book the the day before and they stopped running a 3:30 in the afternoon and it cost 20 euros to get back by taxi.
The only plus was we had a relaxing sunny break missing the gales back home in the UK
Need I say it but
WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING

The hotel is fine if you are expecting 2*, it is most definitely not 4*. We have travelled extensively for both work and holiday and have stayed in a variety of hotels and youth hostels both basic and luxury. However, when we do choose to book 4*, then I have certain expectations. A very uncomfortable bed, holes in the grimy blankets, a fist sized hole in the bathroom tiles and bathroom fittings that were caked in dirt just weren't good enough. The breakfast was poor, the coffee was terrible and the evening food was overcooked and bland. I am sorry to say that even though we had paid for our holiday here (half board), we choose to cut out losses and check out to stay elsewhere. I'm not saying that you shouldn't go to this hotel, but be aware of what you are choosing.

Didn't realise hotel was catered for Saga guests (not my cup of tea really, little under age for Saga holidays!) Was put in room 2107 on first night, absolutely horrendous, air con didn't work, crawling with cockroaches, fridge didn't work, couldn't have door open to let air in as it was on ground floor! Went to reception next morning to be told might be able to change you but later today - as it happens they did, and we were on 3rd floor (view of mountains). Room as average, nothing special for a 4 star hotel, food average, staff average, everything average!

Room Tip: always request high floor rooms!

My wife and I returned to Aguamarina Golf Hotel for the second year running. We booked again this year after a very enjoyable week last year. We arrived on 23rd November which coincidently is almost exactly the same week as last year. The hotel is in a quiet area which suited my wife and I as this was a total chill week for us before the rigours of winter. We found the staff to be really helpful and cheery if you make an effort. We were recognised by some of the bar staff and some of the other hoteliers ferom our visit the previous year. As I said it is a quiet area and a quiet hotel( we are 49 - nearly SAGA time !!!!!) so if you are looking for rowdy, late resort this is not for you. The hotel boasts a very basic shop but does carry alot for its size. There is only one bar functioning at this time of year and so later at night near the end of all inclusive it can get busy but other than that you don't have to wait any length of time, as I said the guys/gals on the bar respond to you if you make an effort to get to know them. The rooms are spacious and clean maybe a little tired but beds are comfy, fridge works, bathroom good everything was working perfectly, we were in 211 which was quiet with view over the pool area and onto the sea. There is no english channels on TV except the news channels though. The food was just fine - no complaints. We have stayed in five star hotels with incredible food but PAID five star prices, there was not a breakfast, lunch or dinner that we could not find something we really enjoyed. The wine was a bit hit or miss - for 70% of the holiday the white was very drinkable but the 30% remaining left alot to be desired. My wife in particular enjoyed the freshly made pancakes for breakfast ( and we enjoyed watching two Russian? gentleman demolish a bottle of red wine every morning-go for it guys) There are no snacks to talk of but at the bar you can get peanuts and olives on A.I. The pool is cold but it was November and there were no problems getting loungers being that it was quieter. There is no need to take a beach towel as you can get one for 10e and recieve a full refund when returned. You can walk to San Blas along the beach front along the path - there is a bit where the path is not complete for about 50m it is walkable though and there is more shops bars etc in San Blas to explore. The French "animation team" who provided the entertainment were all really energetic and fun and as always if talk to them or get involved you will have fun - it is up to you. All in all great value for money we will definitely be back probably bumping in to Bill, Tommy and Fritz next year. If choose this hotel you can have a great time or spend your holiday comparing to other holidays that may have cost alot more. Enjoy

Room Tip: WE stayed both times on the second floor which was easy take stairs if lift was busy the lower no...
