“Excellent Food”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

Stopped at this pub after finishing a 3 hour walk around Warton Crags. First impressions were not great, the pub looked a bit tired and dated and there were only locals in, drinking and watching football. There was no-one else eating. However, the staff were friendly, and the toilets were very clean. Once the meal arrived we were very pleasantly surprised. The food was freshly cooked (no frozen veg), the meat was locally sourced and everyone enjoyed their meals. It was also great value at £5.75 each for sunday dinner with all the trimmings. I would recommend this pub for the food and know we will be going back soon.

“MOST ENJOYABLE MEAL”
Reviewed May 11, 2014

We ate in this lovely village pub Sunday, 11th May. We used the Bay Radio voucher. We booked for 1.30 and were very surprised to see how quiet it was. We all chose to have Sunday lunch which was excellent value at £5.95. Even better I can honestly say its the best Sunday lunch we have had in a long time, our compliments to the chef and the staff who were all very pleasant. We always take my Mum out on Sunday this was our first visit to The Malt Shovel, but we shall definitely return. Thank you

Salmon salad and cumberland sausage went down a treat. Toilets clean. Beer garden round the back. Food served 12 till 8 I think. Mix of locals and passing trade.

“A Very Pleasant Experience.”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

We chose this pub on a recent visit to a relative who lived in the village. As we were in a motorhome we needed a decent sized car park to leave the van in during our visit.

The pub is large and light and we were warmly welcomed. As it was a Monday, it was pretty quiet so we had a good choice of tables to choose from. We sat in a window around a large table and enjoyed watching the locals .

The menu is not overly large, which i always think as a good point - concentrate on what you do serve and make it excellent.

There were the usual sandwiches, all day breakfast, salads etc.

We chose: Ploughman's lunch £6.95. This was very good, a nice variety of salad products, including radish, tastefully arranged, a chunk of cheese, an enormous pickled onion, two types of sweet pickle, grapes and a very nice fresh italian style bread bun.

Soup -£3. This was butternut squash and was a large dish served with the same bread as the ploughmans.

My husband chose (as usual) the breakfast, opting for the smaller version - one of everthing. At £4.50 this was excellent value and consisted of fried egg, tomato, baked beans, sausage, bacon, blackpudding, mushrooms and toast.

We managed to finish everything and all thoroughly enjoyed our meals, considering we had no idea what to expect! Oh - and there was no problem with leaving the motorhome in the car park when we paid our relative a visit.

I did notice high chairs and sweetie machines so obviously families are very much welcomed here.

I'd have no reservations recommending this place, good value and home cooked.
