“Lovely meal”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

Called here when passing last Saturday not sure if we would have needed to book but as it was only 6.30 took a chance.
The staff were were very good and found us a table even though it was quite busy, and they had a big group coming in at 7.00.
The place was spotlessly clean and very traditional.
I had the duck and my wife had roast chicken. both meals where so well presented and beautifully cooked.
The staff where so freindly and helpful.
A pleasure to find this great place with lovely food and friendly staff

I called here earlier tpday with some friends and enjoyed an excellent lunch, well presented with very polite and efficient service. The place was quite quiet when we arrived and quickly filled up more but this didnt appear to detract from the service we experienced and observe. The comfortable pub atmosphere is well complimented by an excellent range of draught beers and the menu has many delightful dishes and we had the salmon, lamb and roast chicken between us and everyone commented on the excellent taste.

Room Tip: I would leave room for a dessert!

Having eaten at some of the fine restaurants of the world (Burj al Arab, De Karmeliet, Caprice HK, Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, etc) I must say this little restaurant really surprised me. 'The food was fantastic, it didn't have the style or finesse as those mentioned above but tasted easily as good. It was served promptly by very polite attentive staff. I will definitely return !

Four of us decided to have Sunday lunch at this eating and drinking house, just south of Lancaster. We'd heard the food was excellent, although perhaps a little pricey.
We were shown to our table immediately on arrival (the days of taking a seat in the bar first and ordering the meal, before going into the dining room, seem to be a fading memory in many establishments).
We were in the restaurant, which boasted a wood burning stove busy crackling and spitting out welcome heat on a fairly drab, drizzly winter's day.
We were impressed by the traditional decor and olde worlde atmosphere of this hostelry, which has been run by the Wilkinson family since 1992. They bought the premises as a freehold in 2010.
The restaurant service, handled effortlessly by cheerful and obliging male and female staff, was excellent and never flagged, even when two much larger parties added to their workload.
The Sunday lunch menu was enterprising and tempting.
Our starters included beetroot soup (a first for me, and extremely tasty), two seafood salads (plenty of salmon, prawns, mussels and crab) which went down a treat, and a black pudding dish which also disappeared in the blink of an eye.
The portents were encouraging!!
Mains choices were two roast Cumbrian beef (you had a choice of meat, one in which the animal appeared to be barely dead - pink as pink can be - and, second, medium and well done. We had the pink and it melted in the mouth; fish pie (my wife described it as beautifully moist without being runny, with plenty of different varieties of fish) and, finally, roast chicken breast, which my 98-year-old mother (a stickler for all that is good in food) described as beautiful. Praise indeed.
Burnt vanilla cream - almost like a brulee - sticky toffee pudding and a couple of cracking apple crumbles, packed with a veritable mountain of succulent sultanas, completed what we all agreed was the perfect lunch.
The only blip on the luncheon experience was that the tables and chairs were mightily close to one another, a little uncomfortably so at times, although it certainly didn't detract from a memorable visit.
So far as the price is concerned, we didn't think it bad at all. Certainly excellent value for money - and courses are individually priced.
The Wilkinsons clearly take great pride in what they do. They have every reason to be proud.
And the good news for my wife and I is that we'll be there again in the very near future, this time for an evening meal, as part of a larger group. Stand by for an update....

Room Tip: There are two en suite rooms in a converted grain barn, just across the road from the pub.

Would loved to have eaten at the Bay Horse. Unfortunately after a great diversion to eat there we were told that they had stopped serving. We were there well within time according to their website.
I complained by email, they have now changed their website but didn't bother apologising. At 8 months pregnant and then too late to get meal elsewhere was not happy!
I'm sure it is very nice, but have a back up plan! I'm not impressed that they couldn't manage a one line email of apology. How arrogant.
