“Potential for a proper day out”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

We visited late on a Friday afternoon; when life was slowing down and cafes closing. To me it is a good space to spend time browsing and questioning why you would want to buy anything other than a lunch (food looked good!). The Mill and the countryside are the stars; pologies to Mr Hockney but I could spend more time looking at the shifting shades and moods of the hills from the staircase than getting too serious over the vaguaries of the art on display.

“Diner is poor”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013 via mobile

Espresso was served in cold cups, so was tepid. Pizza was sub Pizza Express fare, mushroom burger was a mushroom in a bun for £9. Tables and chairs felt cheap, staff were slow and disinterested. Shame, the setting is nice, and the bookshop is great. Guess they don't need to try.

“Heritage experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013

Fabulous use of the very impressive Victorian mill building. Good and interesting shops within it, unusual book selection in the book shop. Very interesting history boards of the mill and DVD to watch. Very disappointed to find that parts, including the exhibition of the Hockney trees were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

“Disorganised, pleasant staff but poor food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2013 via mobile

Great to see the artwork displayed in such a way,not at all static. However more thought needs to be given to organisation and management. Poor directions from the car park, no obvious entrance. The cafe staff were friendly however the food ( not cheap) was poor. The chips were reheated for a meal eaten at 12.30!

“David Hockney in a historical setting.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

The village of Saltaire and Salts Mill itself are fascinating and important aspects of British industrial development and Victorian social housing.. There is a really marvelous exhibition of David Hockney's work, including video interviews with the artist.
