Hotel Toruno
Ranked #3 of 12 El Rocio B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 12, 2011

We spent two nights in El Rocio during a tour of Andalucia. Hotel Toruno is located right at the edge of the marches with all rooms having small balconies and a view of them - bird lovers can start watching the Donana wildlife (best equipped with binoculars) directly from the hotel. The room was clean and nice, but nothing special. Breakfast and dinner (half borad is great value for money!) are served in the hotel's excellent restaurant on the other side of the sandy street. The only drawback was that staff insisted several times (even after we had understood) that half board was only for two people in the double room, but not for the child in the extra bed - we had to order a la carte in addition.

El Rocio itself is a weird place that appears to Catholic worshippers, ornithologists and horse riders, so you'll meet plenty of these, plus a few tourists.

Staff was OK. We had a room next to a back street and walkway which got very loud that night for some reason. It was a little difficult to find and the lack of street signs and only sand (I got hung up) did not help. The breakfast was OK, but heavy on the sweets.

The hotel itself was lovely, quite small and quaint and the staff were friendly. We had a room overlooking the lagoon which was great. The only complaint about the hotel really is that you can hear people in the corridors and the rooms are wee bit small, but still comfortable.

The town itself is nuts. It´s not paved, but all sand due to the horse-mad community who go there and it had been raining torrentially so the place was a moonscape with large ponds in the huge roads and squares. Added to the adventure really. All the bars have high tables for horse riders and the hotels bar and restaurant across the street was no exception. The food there was excellent, if a bit pricey, and the service was good anfd friendly, although if some posh Sevillano family came in, it seemed to wane at your table.

All in all, a good hotel in a nice spot, but I´d only go in the quiet season. Trust me on that...

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the lagoon.

Superb location for our birdwatching holiday.I stayed in El Rocio 25 years ago and it has changed very little.Eating in the associated restaurant now enables you to look over the marsh as evening birds come to roost.Hotel comfortable and reasonably quiet.Taverna nearby much less expensive and very welcoming.Photography opportunities best early morning and late evening.

First, a correction: This hotel is not in the city of Huelva but in El Rocio, quite some km away (but still in Huelva province). El Rocio is famous for its springtime Virgin pilgrimage attracting 1 million of the faithful. Expect your local souvenir shops to follow a similar theme.

The hotel itself is quite charming, good value for the money. On the plus side, they have made some attempts to go 'green' (low wattage bulbs, etc.), the beds were not as bad as in some spanish hotels (normally like bricks, these were okay). The rooms are dark, which is an advantage in the summer sun. The location is just stunning. Imagine waking up to see storks, flamingos and herons out your window, as well as the daily turnout of the local horses to pasture in the marshlands. Parking is basically free outside, since you just locate your in an empty spot in the sand (no pavement).

On the negative side, I was appalled at the surly staff, who gossiped about the estranjeros as we passed by as if they didn't know any foreigner could possibly understand them. So unprofessional. Also, a hotel on a marsh really should have SCREENED windows since the flies prevented us from ever opening them. The restaurant next door has lovely views but is poor value for the money. Finally, charging one euro per 15 minutes for Internet access at the computer in the lobby is highway robbery, when every internet cafe in spain charges less than that for a full hour.

The continental breakfast is next door at the restaurant, and is included in the price of a room. The wild olive tree next to the restaurant is supposedly one of the oldest in Europe. Great beaches are a half hour south.

Even with these quibbles, I can't NOT recommend this hotel because it's probably your best bet if El Rocio is your destination. It is charming, but it's not perfect.

This is a nice but basic hotel which backs onto marshland with lots of bird life. The restaurant is excellent although a bit expensive, but have a splurge.

The very best hotel in El Rocio because the rear of the hotel looks straight over the winter flood waters of the Doñana nature reserve and, if you ask when booking, you may well get a room hwich looks straight out to many varieties of duck, geese and water fowl.
Breakfasts are excellent with as much first class coffee as you want.

The restaurant attached to the hotel is in a separate building but the food is fine and the prices moderate.

Prices are reasonable except during the annual romario (pilgrimage) when they are outrageous.
