“A quiet respite away from Tourists”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

We dined in summer 2011 at La Bastiglia on a day trip to Spello. Afterwards we promised to return & stay at the hotel...which we did last week. Spello is the quintessential Italian Hill Town and its narrow alleys are all flowerbox lined & pristine. Because Spello is small, most tourists are day tourists. La Bastiglia is located at the upper end of the city and away from the main tourist street, Via Cavour. Therefore, La Bastiglia commands a quiet perch looking out toward the mountains with the valley below. It's a bit dicey driving a rental car up into Spello to La Bastiglia (the smaller the rental car the better), but once you arrive, parking is free & easy. We had our daughter with us, so the fact that La Bastiglia has a wonderful pool that overlooks the valley made this a nice place to slow down & relax after touring around the larger cities of Umbria. If you're tired of watching tour bus after tour bus pull into Florence or Siena or Assisi, I suggest a night or 2 in Spello to remind you why Italy is such a wonderful family oriented place to vacation.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Junior Suite Ariana which has the BEST terrace!

The place is not a 4 stars. Rooms was not so confortable due to a bad fustiness. You sleep on twin bat you pay for a double. During our holiday, 2 days, we had a issue with the showers and no one help us to solve the problem in a reasonable time.
We also decided to make our dinner but the menu was to continental with dishes not local, to expensive and to much time to eat.
We are not happy for this place!

Room Tip: When you ask for a room remember to choose one of not near the street rooms. The deluxe room is very...

We had dinner in the restaurant at La Bastiglia and enjoyed our meal, without being blown away. The hotel and restaurant is right at the far end of Spello, which isn't a problem. The views are probably lovely in Summer, couldn't see much in the dark! Really knowledgeable and friendly people running the place, very ambitious food without being too clever. Excellent wine list and, given the status of the place, not too expensive. This is definitely a destination rather than somewhere for a quick tourist meal.

After a long walk from Le Silve, the view of Spello from the trail was welcome and made one imagine that one was a medieval traveler arriving at his hill town destination.
The hotel originally put us in a small and very starkly modern room, which would have been adequate, though cramped. Later that evening they moved us to a very large room with terrace into which we had been originally booked. Slightly worn, but much more comfortable with a mixture of traditional and modern decor, we found this room MUCH more pleasant. Nice views of the surrounding countryside from our terrace.
We anticipated the one star Michelin restaurant, but found the tasting menu anti-climactic.
The food was original, complex, presented quite artfully and strangely bland and uniform tasting.
A simpler meal following night (chef's night off) was much more tasty.....guess we just have peasant palates ;-). Breakfast was a upscale version of the universal Italian hotel breakfast buffet, with very good coffee, served very quickly.
On the whole, a pleasant though underwhelming experience

We particularly chose this hotel over many others for its outdoor heated swimming pool. When we discovered the water was in fact icy cold, the unnecessarily, extremely rude older women receptionist couldn't have cared less. Hardly took her eyes from the television that blared away in the background. We were already quite upset about no swimming at all in our two day stay but it was this horrendous woman's appalling attitude that got my shackles up. I felt they could at least upgrade us one notch to a room with a bath as some compensation and though the hotel was entirely empty she flatly refused. I suspect this woeful women was one of the owners but obnoxious people like this should not be in such a front-of-house position of responsibility. Our small room did have a delightful view but that was about it. Sorry, but cannot recommend this hotel at all.

Across to the other spectrum, the hotel's Michelin star restaurant was first class. The (slow) food was original, experimental even, fresh, perfectly cooked and artistically presented. It is truly one of the rare cases where the higher than average price is justified. I would even go as far to say, great value for money. I don't know of any other Michelin star restaurant, where for 75 euros you can have a 7 course degustation menu of such high standard, though we three we opted for a la carte and paid considerably less.

If in the area, the restaurant is a must...go out of your way even, but avoid eye contact with the hotel receptionist. You may just turn to stone!

We traveled to Assissi with a Globus tour (great by the way) and the hotel was in the nearby town of Spello. This was a lovely hotel in this mountain town in Italy, with spacious rooms, and our room had a patio overlooking the countryside, and under the olive trees. The room was clean, with European charm, and nice marble bathrooms with walk-in shower. The food in the dining room was excellent and so was the service. We would definitely go back to La Bastiglia.

After reading a five page article in the german Magazine Geo Saison 2008, we decided to visit this place on our way down to Tuscany. We were excited to find a little peaceful place with apparently wonderful Umbrian cuisine, one of the three best in the region! But unfortunately everything was a great disappointment. From the unfriendly receptionist on the telephone while making the reservation to the reception when we arrived. The room was kind of ok, without anything more to say about. The diner was served by a sour and arrogant lady, who basically looked down on us, when we tried to ask about a good wine to accompany the diner. The pasta was boring and nothing to write home about and the main dishes so so la la. The praised cook never appeared and no one asked wheather the food was any good or wheather we were happy with our stay. We left first thing in the morning, glad to leave the place and wondering how a place like this can survive!
