Legend says that here Pinturicchio lived and worked in this environment for a long time , (considered the most celebrated artist in the area). “The magnificence of Roberto Angelini”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2012

Spello is the gateway into Umbria known for less commercialization than adjacent Tuscany and a truly authentic Italian experience of yesteryear nearby historic Assisi. As you wander up the road into the center of town you encounter one of the greatest enoteca in all of Italy and its owners, the Roberto Angelini family. Roberto and his family are the ultimate Umbrian food and wine aficionados providing an enjoyable and educational Italian wine and dine experience. Roberto is internationally renowned for showcasing high quality but good value wines of not only Umbria but the most important wine regions of Italy. He matches the wine with simple but typical and delicious Umbrian fare. While he pours the wine and his delightful family and staff serve a wonderful meal, you are certain to want to purchase the wines you drink in the Enoteca Properzio and learn even more. You can even arrange to stay in one of their very quaint and restored medieval stone apartments. Roberto and family provide an amazing and magnificent Umbrian adventure loved by all and not to be missed at fantastic value!

“A hidden gem in the heart of Umbria”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

Many people travel to Umbria to visit Assisi and I couldn't agree more as it is a magnificent place. However, many travelers may overlook this small medieval town next to Assisi called Spello. There in the small town square is Enoteca Properzio - a perfect small restaurant and wine shop for wine and food lovers. Roberto Angelini and his family does it right. I first met Roberto back in April of 2009 and have become good friends since then. Even though he does not speak any English (nor I Italian), we some how manage to communicate to each other. His passion and knowledge for wine is contagious and just listening to him describing it is a music to my ears. Set up an appointment to go there and have him set up a proper food & wine tasting. Your mouth will get a glimpse of what heaven is like savoring in all the flavors caused by pairing the right kind of food with wine. I love that this town is still not overcrowded with tourists. While Spello does get their share of visitors, it is still a town that gives you the true local Italian way of life and experience. I highly recommend visiting this place next time you are in this area.

“Not to be missed!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

In early September our group of 18 took a guided tour of Assisi, and our guide brought us to Enoteca Properzio for what turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Roberto and his English-speaking daughter Irene guided us through several courses of fabulous food and outstanding wines for lunch. We all enjoyed the lovely outdoor patio and superb hospitality. Note that in the recent 25th anniversary issue of Conde Nast, this place is listed under the entry to Umbria as a "trip of a lifetime." They got it right! Make the trip; you will not be disappointed.

“A destination enoteca”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

It is worth a trip to the delightful, ancient Umbrian hill town of Spello just to dine with the Angelini family. Our party of four did not order from the menu but allowed Roberto and Lucca to guide us. And they did not lead us astray. Who would have thought that our peak dining experience could be in this mountain village? By the way, the truffles in the pasta were rooted out that morning by the family dogs. Now, THAT's fresh!

“When Only The Best Will Suffice!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2012

My wife and I just spent the afternoon tasting some of the best wines of Italy! We were at Enoteca Properzio located in Spello. We were guided by Roberto Angelini and his son Luca and daughter Irene. The combination of their hospitality, style, generosity and knowledge of wines is only matched by their collection! Stopping here has been a great highlight of our trip through Tuscany and we strongly recommend Enoteca Properzio and the Angelini family to all!
