“Decent accommodation, lousy menu & food”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

The hotel is situated on the main road in the centre of the village, which would normally be good, but unfortunately there are two loud chiming bell towers opposite, so sleep was interrupted a few times. The rooms are well appointed, clean and comfortable.

Don't eat, or drink here. The menu is quite expensive and the food dire. For France, this is an exceptionally poor place to eat.

This is a beautifully renovated hotel, athough the room we were given was under the roof and the only ventilation was a skylight window which we could not open because it was raining, so the room was too hot. We found the room very hot unless we turned on the airconditioner. We wished we had paid more for a better room. The reception was English speaking and very warm and helpful. We were there on a Monday night and the restaurant was closed so our only option, because we were hiking, was a fancy, expensive restaurant nearby.

We really enjoyed it here. The hotel has been really nicely refurbished. We had a very comfortable and spacious room with a good bathroom and shower and views out the back of the hotel over the hills. It's quite a simple place. Breakfast was very good - buffet style with lots of things to choose from. We ate here one night and had a very tasty meal.

The service was a bit brusque when we arrived but I think that was more a cultural/language issue than reality and overall everyone was kind and helpful.

The village is very characterful with lots of consistent local architecture. There are good walks all around. We did one from the village and drove to another.

After a great deal of research for a charming inn in the Basque mountains, we settled on Oppoca, and we were delighted. Beautifully renovated, this traditional building sits in the center of a perfect mountaintop village, with every window giving out onto a view of the green hillsides, complete with sheep and clouds.
The welcome, hospitality, and advice were everything we could have asked, and our dinner on the back terrace, surrounded by countryside, was superior. We had two of the best dishes we had on our month-long trip through France: a shrimp starter and the most perfect apple tart I've had in my life.
We chose a "caractere" room, which had a lovely window view, but next time I would consider renting one of the rooms with a terrace that looks out over the mountains. The view and outdoor sitting space would be worth the extra money in this location.

Room Tip: You'll want a view of the mountains, so inquire about that in choosing your room.

We stayed at La Maison Oppoca as part of our honeymoon around France and Spain - and we had never visited this part of the basque country. Unfortunately the reception (as mentioned in earlier reviews) wasn't very warm, and the service in the restaurant was very formal and unfriendly.

the Room was very big, and the bathroom had been well-done, but a swish rain-shower can't make up for feeling like you're unwelcome when you're paying 150 euros a night to stay somewhere!

The town of Ainhoa is very touristy, with several shops all selling the same tat - and only a couple of bars. Also, the options for eating out are very limited as restaurants are closed for several nights during the week, so we drove to St Jean de Luz and Biaritzz, becuase at least they both have some variety! it's probably a great base for walkers but unfortunately it rained for the whole of the 3 days we were there!

The restaurant is very nouvelle-cuisine, but has a good wine selection. We ate at the "bistro", and we had a very disappointing meal, although other people had ordered different things that looked much nicer (avoid the veal lasagna!). The breakfast however, were very good - with lots of selection and constantly replenished stock.

The night before checking out we were informed that we had to pay for our room in cash (but could pay for dinners/breakfasts on a card) - which was very inconvinient as we didn't have 450 euros in cash and had to drive around biaritzz on a sunday looking for cash machines that weren't out of money (the first 5 we came across were empty!). When I asked for a receipt I was told it wasn't possible, very odd.

Overall, our experience in Ainhoa would have been greatly improved if the reception was a bit warmer - we won't be back.

We stayed overnight on our trip from Portugal to the UK, arriving at 6 and leaving by 9 the next day. We had two very large rooms at the back of the hotel - away from the local church bells - which are very modern and beautifully appointed. Large beds, big screen TV, fully equipped bathroom with bath and separate shower and so on.

We ate in the Bistro as the restaurant is closed on a Sunday - and that suited us fine; like other reporters we found it odd to be asked what we would drink for breakfast...the meal was fine and served efficiently.

Breakfast is croissants/rolls, cereals, etc - but on reflection seems pricey at €9 each. We all considered later how much better it feels when breakfast is included in the overall price.

It's a pleasant place to stay and the rooms are lovely - but just seems a touch pricey.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back to avoid the church bells

Ainhoa, whilst pretty, turned out to be very much busier than we had envisaged. In July it was heaving the afternoon we arrived with day trippers, cars nose to tail along the single street, and a row of shops all selling the same mass produced stuff.

We very much enjoyed our evening meal in the hotel's pleasant and spacious restaurant. Fresh flavours and some interesting combinations with excellent breads etc. However our view on the hotel itself was somewhat mixed . We felt that our room was somewhat dark and stuffy as only a small seating area set to off side of the main room had any natural light or window you could open to ventilate the room. The service was proper but not in any way warm and had some odd features such as being asked immediately we arrived in mid afternoon exactly what hot drinks we wanted the next morning for breakfast in the dining room. This check in involved a flow of French which is clearly reasonable and to be expected as we were in southern France but, in this instance, it was not tempered in any way by any smile or signal acknowledging that this might stretch our now very distant school language skills.
