La Maison Oppoca Hotel Restaurant
Ranked #4 of 4 Hotels in Ainhoa
Reviewed July 30, 2011

Ainhoa, whilst pretty, turned out to be very much busier than we had envisaged. In July it was heaving the afternoon we arrived with day trippers, cars nose to tail along the single street, and a row of shops all selling the same mass produced stuff.

We very much enjoyed our evening meal in the hotel's pleasant and spacious restaurant. Fresh flavours and some interesting combinations with excellent breads etc. However our view on the hotel itself was somewhat mixed . We felt that our room was somewhat dark and stuffy as only a small seating area set to off side of the main room had any natural light or window you could open to ventilate the room. The service was proper but not in any way warm and had some odd features such as being asked immediately we arrived in mid afternoon exactly what hot drinks we wanted the next morning for breakfast in the dining room. This check in involved a flow of French which is clearly reasonable and to be expected as we were in southern France but, in this instance, it was not tempered in any way by any smile or signal acknowledging that this might stretch our now very distant school language skills.

The rather small room was a bit run down and poorly furnished, which is not right for the price. We were obliged to eat an endless and elaborate dinner or else go hungry, as the smaller bistro restaurant was not open for dinner, and this is a very very small town with nowhere else to go. Add to this we were tired and it was pouring rain. Staff a bit grumpy too. Not a bad place, just not a very good one. The dinner was horribly expensive. We asked for something simple, but no luck!

Stayed for two nights at La Maison Oppoca and very much enjoyed the experience. We were shown to a very large room with a private balconey. It had a beautiful Samsung HDTV to watch the French open, etc. A modern bathroom made us feel like we were at home. The hotel`s owner was a friendly and helpful hostess, who added to the comfort of our overall experience.

As it turned out, her highly regarded restaurant was closed on Sundays and Mondays, so we had two delicious meals in their bistro. If your travels take you to Ainhoa in the French Basque country, you cnnot do any better than the Maison Oppoca.

Hotel La Maison Oppoca is a beautifully restored and updated small hotel in the center of Ainhoa, one of France’s “Most Beautiful Villages”. It is owned and operated by the Massonde family who are very welcoming and helpful. The attached Bistro and Fine Dining restaurants are outstanding. The breakfasts are also delicious. The “Oppoca” is a great base for exploring the beautiful Basque region. If possible, reserve one of their rooms at the back for a great view of the mountains.

We stayed at La Maison Oppoca for two nights on a tour of the Pays Basque and could not have been happier. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and well-equipped and have been restored in a light, modern style. The muted grey and beige tones work well with light oak beams and flooring. We had one of the less expensive rooms but were impressed by its size and by the splendid walk-in shower.

The modern influence is also seen in the dining room were Patxi Massonde, who was named one of the best young chefs in southwest France for 2009, is responsible for the cooking. His father, Dominique (this is a hotel of two generations) is chef in the adjoining bistro.

Our departure could have been a personal disaster for me. After a couple of hours on the road I discovered that I had left behind a jacket and two pairs of trousers. Our anxious telephone call to the Oppoca received a calm and pleasant response. The missing items were forwarded by post to another address in France along with a warm and cordial note from Marilyn Massonde, wife of Paxti, who shares front of house duties with her mother-in-law Chantal. I owe them a big thank-you and would definitely return.

A well maintained hotel with well designed, large and comfortable rooms which would have given us a good night's sleep, but for the nearby chiming clocks.....yes, that's plural - there were two of them. They chimed every hour throughout the night, out of sync with each other by about two minutes, so we had a double dozen dose at midnight. Clearly the bells were nothing to do with the hotel, but if staying here, it may be quieter to ask for a room at the back, away from them. The staff were not particularly welcoming but the hotel restaurant was excellent, as was the typical French breakfast.

The hotel was mentioned in a Times article so seemed worth a visit. The hotel has recently been refurbished with the result that our room was a lovely mixture of period furniture with really up to date en suite facilities. Restaurant was very busy with a good if slightly limited menu. Staff are extremely helpful, chased up the road after us after we had left our camera in the restaurant, and attentive. Village is great for a day's sightseeing, if you've never been to this part of the world it's well worth a detour.
