Description: "The Ithurria Isabal family have been welcoming guests to the Ithurria Hotel in Aïnhou, France, for three generations. Set in the Basque countryside, the hotel has a warm, rustic ambience and is located close to the coast and the Spanish border. The dining room is the heart of the hotel, and with its terra cotta tiled floors, beamed ceilings and antique furniture the restaurant is ideal for cosy, romantic meals. Head Chef Xavier Isabal cooks up superb family recipes, and we love the Ithurria's signature foie gras pie cooked with ceps and fillets of wood pigeon served with a salad dressed with walnut oil and wild cherries in vinegar; and the Stephane cup – Bourbon vanilla ice cream with chantilly cream, grilled almonds and hot chocolate sauce. Had a Michelin quality 3 course lunch here in a converted farm house that is over 300 years old and the idyllic surroundings of Ainhoa certainly added to the enjoyment of the food.
Appetizer is Iberian Ham beautifully plated with some black mushrooms. Entree of chicken is lightly coated and tender and succulent. Pie for desert the crust is buttery flaky and tasty.
Ambiance is enhanced by the rustic wooden beams and antiques all around.
All in all a nice experience in the countryside.

No balance, no surprises. Pasta not al dente and "wet" from a sauce with too much cream. Pork meat which was far too done. We are convinced of the fact that the chief in the kitchen and the manager do have to improve their output to make things better.

We had a delightful meal in the middle of Basque country, about an hour from the coast. This restaurant is in a charming former roadhouse in the small town of Ainhoa. We had the 36 E prix fixe menu. The meal started with amuse bouche of fish over watermelon. Our starters were tomato tartes and zucchini wrapped goat cheese. My husband had filet with a delicious brown sauce, I had rabbit. We had delicious chocolate souffles for dessert which they substituted for the dessert on the prix fixe menu. This restaurant is worth the drive through beautiful countryside. Next time we'll stay here.

This family-run restaurant in a well-respected hotel, turned out to be a most pleasant -experience. It offered a traditional Basque and French menu of excellent quality and value in a traditional Basque house providing a dignified and intimate atmosphere with its 18th century furniture and accessories. This is not for the back packer looking for a hostel type bargain. There are 2 fixed menus of 36 and 58 euros which were artistically presented and were of excellent quality. We ordered the 36 fixed menu which included the entrée, main course and dessert with a generous offer of three amuses-bouches , two at the beginning and one after the dessert. A nice touch! There is also an à la carte menu which, in the end, can result in a more expensive dinner. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive and of a high professional level. Dinner service begins at 8 pm. Reservations were not needed in June. If you arrive early, we suggest a leisurely walk around the historic and picuresque streets of the village.
