“Hotel OK, Breakfast Excellent, Fine Dining it's Not!!!”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

The White Lion is a lovely old coaching inn in the centre of Bala just 5 minutes walk from the lake, The rooms are adequate, we were a party of three couples and the beds seemed to vary in degrees of comfort, ours was fine but friends woke up with stiff backs and another couple failed to sleep.

Breakfast is a treat with lots of local produce and a good hot buffet and selection of yogurts and cereal.

Dinner however was not good on either of the nights we stayed - tough steak night one and tasteless watery curry the second. They were running out of desserts faster than we could choose them. When we asked for a bottle of house white we ended up with a bottle of 5% sweet gooh. The front of house staff were very good and dealt with our moans and groans well but it took the edge off what should have been a brilliant weekend..

Room Tip: Ask to be on the first floor if you have fitness issues there are three floors and no lift.

One night stay in single room on third floor. Hotel clean, staff friendly and welcoming. Room a good size, perfectly clean and well prepared. A good bar with super 'Brains' beer. Plenty of choice for breakfast. This was excellent value and I would definitely stay again.

The room was excellent in every respect, apart from revelers in the street at 4 am.
The staff were kind and attentive. The Welsh breakfast was soon served and as good as you could expect anywhere.
Highly recommended

Nothing to complain about, spacious clean rooms, clean bright bathroom and powerful shower. Good bar food and the beers great. Loads of comfortable lounge seating, breakfast buffet was brilliant. Tons of it and good quality. Staff were helpful and worked hard. Very recommended.

This hotel is a liitle like Bala itself, comfortable and pleasant but jaded. The hotel is right in the middle of the town. The rooms are old fashioned and functional generally but the rooms and bathrooms are always clean and tidy. The digital TV and free wi-fi seem to work sporadically. Some of the rooms can be noisy from the street and there is little insulation between the rooms. Service is friendly and so are the staff and the log fires in the bar and lounge are nice on a winter evening. The food both in the restaurant and bar is simple, properly cooked to order and good value - but not exciting.
Prices can be negotiated outside the main holiday season and it is the best hotel in Bala, so it can be good value for the standard you get.

Room Tip: Negotiate your room price.

You really don't have much of a choice in Bala if you want to stay in a hotel. As it is the White Lion isn't a bad hotel, its just not to my personal taste. What can i say about it??? Well the bed was clean, the bathroom was clean (although could have done with a bit of a freshen up décor wise). The breakfast was OK. Service wise, I couldn't comment as we really didn't tax any of them!, no major concerns apart from the fact that Bala's only nightclub is directly opposite, so make sure you get a room at the side or the back!!!!

You could do alot worse than this hotel..

Room Tip: For the love of god if its a Saturday night, get one on the back, not on the front nor on the Tegid...

This is a lovely old-style hotel in a good location. The staff are the first thing i need to mention, all of the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. I had a lovely friendly welcome. I stayed in room 108. To the best of my knowledge there are no lifts in the hotel.

I will start with the only negative, as this is such a lovely hotel that I dont want to end on a negative. There is some kind of air-con compressor that runs all night outside room 108 and it was slightly annoying. It's not loud, just a constant background hum which I disliked.

Now, the positives, good fast free wifi in the lounge and bar (it didnt work in my room). Very comfortable chairs and couches in the tv room and lounge. The bar is a good friendly place to relax, with good service and an open fire. The menu was pretty standard style and I had a delicious pub meal. Ales, cider and spirit range seemed fine although there was only a choice of red or white wine. As it happened the Chenin Blanc was nice, and only £9.99 a bottle (which you can take to your room in an ice-bucket). They could do with a better range.

The hotel is on the high street with a co-op shop opposite, 4 pubs and a small selection of other shops. Parking at the rear was fine and seemed secure. The room was large, clean and the bedding was nice and fresh. There was a nice size bathroom with a lovely powerful power shower.

All things considered a good hotel, great staff, £60 for one night double and a smashing welsh full breakfast with cereals. The toast was granary and the coffee was fine.

I will be staying there again.
