easy to find, car parking facilities in the grounds, easy check in and out, lovely comfortable hotel, very oldy-worldy but so nice! Really nice room, breakfast was delicious and a few pubs and bars (albeit a bit grubby) on the same road which were ok to have a drink in or a bite to eat. Overall, very pleasant stay.

This is a Brains Hotel, and we stayed in room 203 on the 14th and 15th January 2012. We used the Brains "Stay the second night free" offer. We tried to book on-line but the on-line booking form wouldn't accept the offer code that we were given (JANFEB2012), so we phoned only to be told that the rates were not as on their web-site but more expensive. We elected for a Four-poster bedded room at UKP 75 (This is the same as the web-site for a Four-poster) For bed and breakfast (With the voucher this is the rate for two nights - the cheap bit!).
Room 203 is a large L shaped room (about 20ft square with the inclusion of the ensuite). However if the idea of a four-posted conjurs up the image of a romantic ambience, well not in room 203. Still the TV's large and had a DVD player and reception has a few DVD's that you could borrow free of charge. The bathroom was also large and clean (Looked newly refurbished) and had the most powerful shower that we've ever experienced - Fantastic!
The town of Bala is in an ideal location for outdoor pursuits and there is a very large lake with narrow gauge railway to take you to the end of it (You can also walk, jog or bicycle - the train only runs April to September + Christmas specials). With the vast influx of visitors during the summer season the town copes well with lots of Pubs and eateries, mostly empty at this time of year.
With the various offers from Brains, we chose to eat in the bar Saturday evening (Discount on two meals and a free, yes free pint). We had the chilli and BBQ ribs, each of which was very poor quality and we we kept waiting 40 minutes after placing out order. On Sunday evening we voted with our feet and went elsewhere.
The same quality problem with the food was present at breakfast, excellent service but poor quality ingredients spoiling what could have been a good experience. For breakfast Monday morning, I tried the smoked hadock - inedible!
The other "Fly in the ointment" was the noise from the eatery oposite (Ty Cwrt?) with loud music disturbing us trying to get asleep and loutish shouting in the street at 05.00 (yes 5 a.m.)waking us up!! Room 203 is at the front of the building, but set back well from the road.
The one saving grace is the splendid staff, all cheerful and helpful e.g. there's no lift, but help with our bags was readily offered.

Room Tip: Phone and book the room and discus position and size.

The deal that we got here was good although the Gala Dinner for New Years Eve was far from Gala. More like a quiet evening in a rather dull dining room. Nevertheless the food was good and the room was more than adequate. You would not believe that Bala can be rowdy but there was a shop window smashed to celebrate New Year.

Room Tip: We were placed on the third floor and there is no lift. Good if you want to burn off some pounds. The high street was noisy at night but it was New Year.

This is the second time I have stayed at the White Lion Royal Hotel. Both visits have been related to outdoor activity so the hotel acted as the base.

From check-in to check-out we experience friendly and helpful staff. We had a very large room with a separate bath room. The room was well equiped and provisioned for tea/coffee etc.

The food was good and not expensive, especially the bar menu. The beer was 'real' and also a reasonable price.

Overall I found this hotel (again) good value and the stay enjoyable. I will be back next year.

Room Tip: Try and get a room NOT at the front/main street facing.
