Attraction details
Owner description: Open Gardens and Adventure Playground but also food food food. Caerau Uchaf has the highest private garden open to the public in North Wales at over 1000 ft. We are Toby and Stephanie Hickish, who started building the gardens from scratch in 1994. They were a sideline to our garden design business and have been added to over the years. The cafe has become a significant part of the whole thing and we aim to produce really good home cooked lunches as well as Stephanie's great cakes. We also sell gifts and plants.Caerau Gardens and Cafe is now open SEVEN days a week from 10.00a.m until early evening. We can provide early evening meals especially in High season. At other times booking is appreciated.

“Stunning”

We found this place after browsing what places we could visit when staying locally. I did email them before to see if it would be suitable for mobility issues and dog friendly, I received a very warm welcoming reply. Once you turn off the main road you do wonder where you will end up as well as it being a single winding track ( as most things are in Wales ) there doesn't seem to be anything around. However, on arriving it is a stunning place the gardens are beautiful as well as the views over the hills. Much time and care have gone into them and the photos in the tearoom are worth a look. We had the pleasure of taking lunch here homemade French onion soup was a hit whilst the cakes were very nice too. Everyone here is so welcoming and have time to chat truly a hidden gem. We were also lucky enough to see the young pups their dogs had recently had and was really tempted to have another addition!

“Lovely surprise”
Reviewed August 9, 2014

Picked up a leaflet about these gardens and persuaded the family to try it out before going on somewhere else. Ended up staying most of the day. We were allowed to bring our large friendly dog in as long as he was kept on the lead which was fair enough. The gardens are a higgledy piggledy mixture from formal beautifully manicured lawn to wild garden and adventure playground. There were plenty of things to keep kids busy and amused and we were specially lucky as the family dogs had given birth to ten of the cutest puppies ever and the children were allowed to play with them on the lawn. The toilet facilities were rather basic hence only four stars.
The cafe served a great variety of food at reasonable prices and there was a wide variety of plants for sale. A great day out at a good price.

“Worth the detour!!”
Reviewed August 8, 2014

I had read a few reviews before visiting the Bala area and we popped in by fluke as we were passing. Very warm welcomes greeted us and were made to feel at home straight away even if we felt we had took a wrong turn. The gardens were lovely and well looked after, the trampoline got the thumbs up to along with the hidden fort in the trees and zip wire. We snacked too as recommended and we were not disappointed. After we had a spot of croquet in the gardens before sadly departing, but we would definitely recommend if in the immediate area.

“Hidden Gem in the Welsh Hills”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

What a lovely surprise!
We intended only staying for a couple of hours but ended up staying till closing time.
We were recommended Caerau Uchaf by another family where we were staying. It is very well sign posted from the main road.
We were given such a warm and personal welcome when arriving with a short introduction to what we could find.
You can find a quiet corner to sit in, climb a hill to a wooden fort or just wander through the beautiful gardens with spectacular views.
The café is wonderful with very tasty homemade food and reasonably priced.
Our 8 year old daughter loved it here and it felt safe enough to let her go off on her own with some other children she met.
The added bonus - we got to have cuddles with some very cute 7 week old sprocker puppies which we found hard to leave behind.
We highly recommend a visit and we will visit again.
Thank you

“Great for little kids”
Reviewed July 24, 2014 via mobile

We visited the gardens and cafe on what must have been the hottest day of the year. Once there our toddler found the trampoline and little cars great fun. The gardens were well shaded and the breeze kept us all nice and cool. We ate in the cafe, and had an enormous plate of curry, rice, popadoms and mango chutney which was delicious. This is well worth a visit, ignore the sign if it says closed, as sometimes they forget to turn it round.
