Owner description: Open Gardens and Woodland Playground . Caerau Uchaf has the highest private garden open to the public in North Wales at over 1000 ft. We are Toby and Stephanie Hickish, who started building the gardens from scratch in 1994. They were a sideline to our garden design business and have been added to over the years. The cafe has become a significant part of the whole thing and we aim to produce really good home cooked lunches as well as Stephanie's great cakes. We also sell gifts and plants. Caerau Gardens and Cafe is open from Thursdays to Monday’s incl. from 10.00am until 5.00 pm. Dogs are welcome, we have two of our own who will willingly show you around the gardens. There is plenty of space to explore and quite a few unusual plants. Up in the woodland there is a wooden fort and a zip wire. Children of all ages can spend hours creating and enjoying their own games. If the weather is cooler we have a large room with a wood burner where you can enjoy great coffee and lovely food!

We went to Caerau Ushaf for lunch on a very wet Sunday in October. Needless to say - we were the only ones there, but our host made us very welcome. We ate inside next to a roaring log burner and had the goat curry and the chilli - both very nice. Our dog had a lovely time too - no problem at all with owners dogs who were very friendly. We didn't really get a chance to explore the gardens - it was so wet, we just walked up the hill and back to our car!

We came to the gardens and cafe during a week long visit to Bala, and we were not disappointed! We pulled up and no one else was there, however a few more couples arrived during the time we were there. The resident dogs were unfriendly towards our boy but we think that is because he hadn't been neutered and we experienced a lot of unfriendliness from other dogs until after he had been neutered. Anyway, we thought we would have lunch before looking around the gardens and I had the goat curry from the specials board which was really yummy! The staff were friendly and jovial and we enjoyed the food. We then went to explore the gardens which was amazing, we had a little map which was good because we realised we should go up through the woods to see things like the Adam and Eve and the root chairs and there was also a play area complete with zip wire, rope swing and fort - this brought out our inner child and we spent a good half an enjoying this! Kids would absolutely love it here although I would recommend adult supervision. Also, make sure you wear decent footwear as there are roots and stones that could stub toes if not! Overall, a fun and pleasant half a day.

We stayed in the 'Pigsy' and what a fantastic place. warm, cosy, and fantastic views. The sauna was very welcoming after a days walking. The gardens are lovely and the owners (Steph & Toby) very welcoming. There is so much to see, the walks around the gardens and the surrounding area especially the lake are outstanding, and if you are lucky enough, you will be joined by the owners 2 beautiful and well behaved dogs. They certainly know the area and we were more than happy to follow them through the woodlands. We will definatley be back, sooner rather than later

We stayed in the Pigsty for a weekend getaway. The cottage feels snug and cozy with everything that need. We stayed in and used the kitchen to make all of our meals. The lounge had a TV and also a projector if you wanted to stay in and watch a DVD.

The location is really convenient for Bala which has a great watersports lake. It is less than an hour from Mount Snowdon. Overall a great break.

The view at the property is really stunning. The woods around the gardens are interesting to explore and we had fun with our children stumbling upon hidden sculptures and the fort and zip wire.

Couple of negatives though. Dogs roam freely around the gardens. Both of my kids are not particularly keen on dogs and one of the resident dogs just would not leave us alone. It followed us around the whole way which resulted in plenty of tears. My daughter got dog poo on her hands on the trampoline, which was not nice. We had a coffee and a cake in the cafe and again the dogs were there refusing to leave us alone.

Some of the more formal areas of the gardens which had beds had quite a few weeds and looked like they needed a tidy and restocking.

We would have stayed longer and for lunch if we had not been hounded literally!

I am so sorry you were hounded! We have 2 dogs who are pretty good and we keep them away from the tables but there are 2 more at the moment and I am feeling overrun myself. They belong to a friend who is painting our windows, more difficult to control!
This is our first less than great review and it was bound to happen one day but thank you very much for the 5 star review you have just given us for our other cafe,"Tegid"at the leisure centre in Bala. I hope to see you again and you can try our food at Caerau, the windows are nearly finished! Toby and Stephanie
