“Only saved by the restaurant”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

Stayed one night. Arrived to a cold hotel - heating not on in room, fire not lit in lounge . Nobody available to serve behind bar, no mineral water once we found someone to serve. Reception desk a mess, desk chair blocking access to stairway to rooms. Room shabby, carpet needs renewing, kettle dirty. Poor management very apparent - until we went to the restaurant, run with friendly professionalism by Jane...and Alistair's food was sublime - hope the owners understand what gems they are and reward them appropriately. But would only return if the overall management improves significantly and the place gets a makeover.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the old priory on wed 24 October 2012, after a visit to Longleat House! We were met with a warm welcome and showed to our room (School Room ). It had a lovely 4 poster bed and en suite bathroom, plenty of hot water for a long soak in the tub ,and soap s/ shampoos provided, the room was warm and cosy with all facilities, tea , coffee, kettle,, tv, alarm clock ,bathrobes, towels, even a few books to muse through etc!
I had booked a table downstairs for the evening meal, i sat in the lounge with a pot of tea and was served with some lovely little petit fours , while i waited for girlfriend to get ready . she came down and had a coffee and a few biscuits too ! Canapes were bought to us while we viewed the menu, i decided for the pigeon breast starter followed by blade of beef . my girlfriend had butternut squash soup followed by blade of beef, to be honest we were spoilt for choice . Homemade bread rolls were served with the food , and i cant stress enough ,how excellent the food was ! i would definately recommend the hotel and restaurant to anyone, the breakfast was lovely too ! A fantastic place , reasonably priced, lovely staff and really homely ! I would not hesitate to return !

We had a family reunion at the Old Priory and had a wonderful weekend. The staff are very welcoming and cannot do enough for you, there is a relaxed atmosphere and the food is out of this world!! Reccomended to anyone.

You may be forgiven for thinking that having a booking confirmation from the Old Priory Hotel website following 100% pre-payment for the room constitutes a valid contract.

Sadly, that's not the way they see it.

19 hours and 15 minutes after receiving a booking confirmation from the hotel website (No S6041000), I receive the following email:

"We are sorry to inform you that we have double booking situation on this coming Saturday. It happened simultaneously when someone else booked 2 rooms for Friday & Saturday before we closed our site."

Clearly, a much better offer than the one Saturday night we had booked. Querying the simultaneousness of the booking, I was informed:

"we use intermediate marketing websites such as Laterooms.com and Booking.com to attract bookings – these do not unfortunately automatically update our site in real-time hence the possibility of two or more simultaneous bookings."

In short, the Old Priory use 3 unsynchronised websites (their own, Laterooms.com and Booking.com) - plus presumably telephone bookings - to sell their rooms. Once a day, they obviously decide which one of their up to 3 or 4 "simultaneous" bookings should be honoured - and which ones cancelled.

Don't know about you but I think this practice unethical, a marketing disaster and a breach of contract on a regular basis.

Double booking actually happens very infrequently and can only arise when we allocate our last remaining room on a particular night. It is true that reservations through the marketing websites do not automatically update our main hotel website in real time but generally we update the various websites several times a day particularly for nights where we know the hotel is becoming full. In the rare event that there is a clash we prioritise the earliest booking in time and will try our hardest to make alternative provision for anyone adversely affected. In this case the delay in responding to this customer was caused by firstly trying to rearrange other guests into rooms to create space for this couple and secondly by contacting other local hotels to find alternative accommodation. For this particular customer, and unusually, neither of these actions were effective. We very much regret the inconvenience to this particular customer and will endeavour to minimize the risk of a reoccurrence.

I was looking for somewhere for a coffee inbetween meetings. What a fabulous place, full of character and charm and the garden was absolutely stunning. The staff were friendly and very welcoming, not only bringing me superb coffee but a platter of petit fours to go with it!. I had a quick look at the menus for lunch and evening meal. Next time I am in the area I am definately going to eat there and I might find a reason to stay the night as well! What a find.

Stayed here for 1 night over bank holiday. The rooms were quite nice and had a nice Victorian kind of theme. We ran late because of traffic and the owner was very nice to stay up for us and even gave us fresh milk for a late night tea/coffee. The breakfast choice was also very good.
However, since this is a very old house it had extremely creaky floors. If you want to stay here, I would recommend getting rooms on the top floor so you won't get disturbed by people waking up earlier.
It was also quite nice to be able to check-out by 11 AM. Gave us an opportunity to rest for longer :)

The Old Priory Hotel is the best in the area. The staff is the greatest. THey made us feel welcome, even did our laundry in a few hours which was above and beyond what we would have expected. The building is very old (not a minus but a plus) with all of the charm that you would expect from something of this age. The garden is relaxing and beautiful. The lounge is comfortable and welcoming even with the low ceiling. The room was well appointed and the bed very comfortable. If I am ever in the area again, I will stay here.

Room Tip: Any room is very good. Just be ready for being in a very old, but charming building.
