“Basically a good hotel but the rooms need to be of a higher standard”
Reviewed August 27, 2009

First impressions of the hotel are good. Just to the left of reception is the bar area and to the right is the restaurant. Both look clean & smart. As you go upstairs there is a very nice feature of two large wooden golfers built into the stairs. The room was a good size and clean, although slightly tired, but not scruffy. The bathroom had no bath but there was a shower and the room was a good size & clean. However, there were a number of things that I personally did not like.
In the bathroom
1) One thing that it really lacked was a shelf to store toiletries and other bathroom type items. There was plenty of space to do so and it would have been very handy.
2) The bathroom extractor fan was so noisy, it sounded like a badly tuned tractor diesel engine. In the night the sound was awful and the noise goes on for over 5 minutes after switching off the light. Most hotels will either have a quiet fan or a separate light that can be operated independently above the sink.
3) In the shower, there was nowhere to put the free shower gel & shampoo. It only needs a little soap dish on the wall. It would also have been nice if these free items were replaced after we had used them, but were not done so after the first night.
4) There was free hand soap in the bathroom but it was so very cheap with an industrial smell. The public loo’s in Swansea had much better soap than this. Surely a few extra pence could be spent to give a little bit of luxury.

In the room
1) On arrival, there was a constant noise from an extractor fan just outside the window. I had to shut the window (not easy as you have to stand on a chair & use a lot of force) but I could still here the noise. I went downstairs and asked if we could move to another room but the receptionist said they were full. I found this a little hard to believe as the next day at breakfast there was only about a third of the tables set for the available rooms. The receptionist also asked in astonishment “what extractor fan” as though they did not have one. I pointed out she was standing underneath it in the bar. She then said “okay – but it should go off later that night”. Of course, it was on 24/7.
2) We had one small window in the room but the glass on the outside was so dirty that I don’t think it has been cleaned since the last refurbishment (2004).
3) Our room (room number 8) was above the kitchen area, and it got quite noisy after midnight, with barrels moving, empties taking out, restocking etc, then by 01:00 they switched on the washing machine/dishwasher which kept going for the next hour. Between 02:00 and 06:00 it was quiet apart from the extractor fan outside the window. At 06:00 the kitchen day shift started and the first thing they did was to switch on a bigger and noisier fan.

The above problems with the room overshadowed what is basically a reasonable hotel. The food at breakfast was good & so was the service and the staff friendly. In fact the food was so good we had an evening meal there and again it was very good. The service in the bar, the staff and the prices were all good.

Overall, the hotel was basically good apart from the noise in our room. If you have a single room (top floor) or a double room with a sea view (at the front) then you would probably not get the noise problems. I think they need to refurbish the rooms to a higher standard, then the hotel will be one of the best in Porthcawl. Unfortunately, I think the room(s) above the kitchen area are always going to have a noise problem.

Having booked nearly 6 months in advance to stay at the Fairways for New Years Eve, we arrived to betold that our room had been cancelled. After the initial booking, I called in person to the hotel to double check the booking and was told that everything was fine - our room was booked and table reserved for teh New Years buffet and entertainment.

When we arrived on New Years Eve we were told that our booking had been cancelled. I had not telephoned and cancelled - obviously - but we were offered no compensation or alternative arrnagements. This left us without any plans and we had to return home, which luckily is only a 30 minute drive.

Will never recommend this hotel to anyone in the future - a total let down.
