“Not as bad as they say!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2012

We've just got back from 1 week skiing in Claviere staying at the Hotel Roma, I read the reviews just before we left and will admit I travelled fearing the worst. However I am very pleased to say I was pleasently surprised. I can only assume that since all the awful reviews were left the hotel must have had a make-over. We were travelling with a huge group of friends (67 in total) so could have a good look at several of the rooms and the all seemed of an equal standard. Ok, their not huge but their big enough, the beds are comfy, the bathrooms were all you need in a bathroom and there was sufficiant hot water to go round. The showers are big enough and do come with shelves for your shampoo so no turning off the hot water with your bottom as some people were saying! The rooms were cleaned each morning and fresh towles provided every other day. My only 2 minor complains would be that the ski room isn't locked so to get round this I took my skies up at night (theres a lift so its very easy) and there was only 1 electrical socket in our room but with a little thought it didn't cause a problem

Dinner was plentiful and very tasty, for those with bigger appetites they only had to ask nicely and the waitress brought round any extras. Breakfast wasn't overly spectacular but was there was plenty of it - rolls, cheeses, ham, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal etc and plenty of tea and coffee.

I've been skiing every year for the past 21 years and would say that overall this hotel is very much like most other ski hotels I've stayed in and would recommend it.

Hotel Roma is one of the best hotels I have stayed at for skiing purposes! Yes the hotel may be a bit basic but do you want complete luxury on your skiing holiday? Your only really using the rooms to sleep in if your a serious skiier like myself.
The resort itself is very basic so dont expect to come here and find something to do if your not going to be skiing.
There is only a 10 minuite walk to Mongenevre (France) an is definatley worth a visit.
Me and my dad come here year after year and it is one of the best hotels by far in Claviere with friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. Diane in the Roma is lovely and always brings a smile back to my face whenever me and my dad go out here!
I usually go over new year and they have some amazing festivities going on and this year im going out there over christmas so will also be an amazing expereince.
If you've never been to the Roma then it is definatley worth a visit!

Room Tip: Top floor if there is school groups and also a view of the mountains .. perfect thing to look at whe...

We have been taking students (18+) here for the last 7 or 8 years and this hotel has improved every year. It is a 2 star hotel but excellent value for money. Plenty of food and the staff are fantastic. You couldn't really wish for a better location in terms of skiing, just a minute walk to the ski school where you can ski to the lift. Diane (the owner) is very accommmodating and helpful. There is plenty of hot water in the evening for showers and a nice bar area with sky tv. Claviere itself is a small resort with limited night life but a couple of nice restaurants and bars. It borders on Montgenevre where you can ski to from Claviere which offers a more extensive area for all types of skiers. You can also ski to Sestriere, Sansicarrio and Sauze (although you'd have to be a great skier to get to Sauze as bit of a trek) .Claviere village is at 1800 and the highest lift goes up to about 2800 and so we've always had good snow going in March. Try and go on a skiddoo up the mountain one evening for a meal in one of the restaurants. Great experience and highly recommend. I would say this is a good 2 star hotel its clean, comfortable and functional. My partner and myself have actually stayed here too on a stopover on a personal ski holiday and wouldn't if we didn't think the hotel was good enough. What more could you ask for for the price.

We took a school group from North London to stay here at February half term holiday, the purpose of the stay was to learn to ski. The hotel was incidental as a place to sleep, eat and socialise from. Read all the reviews before we went, who were those people who stayed there. Yes its 2 star, yes the rooms were basic but they all had showers which worked well and were hot yes the furntiure was well used but servicable and where we complained they repaired/amended it to make it okay, yes the building is stone/cement in the corriodrs but noisy, only if you went screaming down the corridor, the walls were not that thin, we had sixth formers and year 8's, they all manged to sleep well, yes the bootroom and ski store was easily accessible from the hotel and from there to the snow. Food was for the majority of time well cooked and once they knew we were serious eaters they cooked as much as we wanted, yes we had to demand extras salads but they tried to make sure we had vegetables as well. Biggest drawbacks were breakfast, very basic, and the two English meals they gave us, very poor fish fingers, baked beans in Italy? but the hotel staff had a sense of humour and continually tried to make sure everyone had food on their plate, the manager listened to complaints (at 2 star have you every stayed in a hotel where you never ask for something extra but she helped us out and was always willing to listen and help. The other school party in the hotel got along with us fine and shared the common areas so that we could all hold our meetings when we liked. Was it noisy with 90 students, of course it was at meal times, they were very excited but for the rst of the day it was absolutely fine. Go back yes we would because it made the skiing affordable, no luxuries but a good week away, basic but it served the needs of the students and staff and gave us access to the snow which is why we came.

I was a little bit afraid of stying in that hotel after reading all theese negative comments. But fortunately hotel is not as bad as esribed. If you are ooking cheap hotel don't await luxury in your room. Hotel and rooms are very basic no tv no hair dryier o tee maker in the room, just beds and shower. But it was expected for such a low price. Breakfast in not english type but also not coffe and crossaint as I met in many places in Italy. I recommend this hotel for students not for families

i went to hotel roma in february 2010 with my school they charged us £750 including coaches and food which i suppose is okay. The rooms were spotless and i couldnt fault the clenliness of the hotel but everything i the room was falling apart ! there were no handels on the draws or the wardrobe ( and the wardrobe was tiny) and my friends door ended up falling off which ment they had to swap rooms and the beds were also breaking by the end of pur holiday. The staff were lovely and very helpful they were always willling to help us. The food wasnt that great but after you had been on the slopes for 3 hours you didnt care what it tasted like but there is a pizza shop down the road which we all used to walk to which was fine. The location of the hotel is amazing ! the veiws from the balconys were breath taking as you could see the slopes and the nature on them which would make amazing photographs. Overall my stay at this hotel was very enjoyable thanks to the staff of equailty ski shcool and the hotel staff ! THANK YOU on behalf of Cleeve Park School we felt very welcome i would reccomend this hotel for children on trips !

For a skiing holiday, it's all you need - a warm room, comfy bed, honest, wholesome food in good quantities and a short walk to the pistes. If you're looking for the frills - room service, TV/DVD player - forget it. You may also have to share (as we did) the hotel with several dozen noisy students, but just make sure when you book that you ask for a room as far away as possible from them. Certainly one of the more memorable ski hotels we've stayed at!
