This was my second trip to Anguilla (third if you count the day trip) and first time staying on Meads Bay. I met up with one of my college roommates and stayed a week in one of the oceanview rooms. Overall, the room was very clean and nicely appointed.

Only nit about the room--we asked for two beds which they accommodated. However, when they switch out the beds you get a downgrade in linens. Basically we had no bed spreads or head boards like you would if you had a king. We had two twins with a sheet and a thermal blanket. It was fine, just not anywhere as nice as the king size bedding.

Mead's bay is beautiful. There are a lot of hotels, unlike Shoal Bay, but very few people, also unlike Shoal Bay. The Viceroy on one end is ridiculously big. Did not hear any construction noise.

The breakfast that is included was a bit pathetic, but it was fine for a bite to tide you over to lunch. We at dinner here the first night--long story. My advice, don't. It was pretty pathetic. Subpar food.

The pool at the end of the day was awesome--great for watching the sunset and enjoying cocktails with other guests. We met some really great people and hung out there almost every afternoon from 4-6:30. (Hi to our friends from NY and NC!)

The biggest disappoint came when Frangi. decided to throw a BBQ party for guests and locals the last day of the boat races. We were basically chased from the property. The music was blaring club music. So load you couldn't read a book or talk to the person next to you on the beach, the walls of your room shook, drunk locals jumping into the pool clothed. Basically, the staff wanted a party for their friends. Paying guests were the least of their worries. They did comp us 50% of a night after we complained, but it was really tacky on their part. They thought nothing of their existing guests.

Overall, good experience. I'd stay again, but I'd probably go back to Ku or try one of the other properties.

The beach

The biggest draw to the Frangipani is its ideal location – we travelled all over the island and can honestly say that Meads Bay was by far the most beautiful and serene beach. We had the beach practically to ourselves, too – it was priceless. Don’t get caught up on the hype of Shoal Bay East – it’s commercialized with so many people that you can’t even see or fit on the beach. Even locals with whom we spoke admitted Meads Bay is really the most naturally beautiful. If a gorgeous beach is what you’re after, then Frangipani is your place.

The service

The service at the Frang, however, left much to be desired. Staff looked and acted miserable, giving off a very unhappy vibe. You could tell they had no interest in being there, let alone helping out. My fiancée and I were there to relax and have fun, but being surrounded by such unfriendly faces was a real downer. Please don’t rely on the hotel to offer anything in the way of “services” – we made all of our own restaurant reservations, for example, since the woman at the front desk couldn’t be bothered to assist. It’s a shame because the hotel has such potential but people really make a place and, unfortunately, the staff brings the hotel down (hence the average tripadvisor rating.) I wasn’t expecting or needing Ritz Carlton service but would it kill them to smile every once in a while? The GM (from San Francisco) arrived for his monthly visit while we were there and the service perked up a bit but, overall, it was a huge disappointment.

Because of its location, I wouldn’t steer anyone away from Frangipani but please interact as little as possible with the staff as you can.

The rooms

The rooms are stylish but without having much charm. We had an ocean view room and it was real treat to be able to look out to the turquoise blue waters. The non-view rooms, by comparison, looked pretty depressing, overlooking the gravel parking lot so I highly suggest you splurge a little more $ for an ocean view. The room, while not a suite, was spacious enough and very open. A little too open considering there was no door on the bathroom!

The food

The continental breakfast was as unenthusiastic as the staff but served its purpose. Some reviews have reported waffles and eggs as a part of the offering but we only had cereal, some (not very good) pastries and cold coffee. Considering the lackluster breakfast, we didn’t really stick around to check out any of the lunch or dinner options.

Food on the island, overall, is delicious but expensive. We went to Oliver’s on our first night and it was the best decision. Great drinks, great location/view, interesting cuisine (we had an appetizer of freshly prepared stingray that was amazing) and fabulous service. The restaurant’s manager, “Miss B”, gives the restaurant a whole lot of love and gave us terrific recommendations for other restaurants to try, can’t-miss activities to do, etc. Considering the hotel lacked any concierge ability, we were so grateful to have met her. We even went back for a pre-dinner cocktail one evening to watch the sunset on the deck downstairs. My fiancée also ordered a Cuban cigar and loved it.

Other great places: Piccante’s (wonderful fish tacos, friendly service), E’s Oven (food was superb and the prices were quite reasonable…get the seafood pasta…but the service could have used some fine tuning) and you MUST go to Le Bon Pain, a lovely little bakery on the Northeast part of the island. We went for breakfast one day (they close by noon) and enjoyed the best egg sandwich on the freshest and most delicious baquette we could have dreamed of.

We had heard great things about the fries at Le Bistro at Malliouhana (right down the beach) so we went there one day for lunch. It was good but I wouldn’t rave.

Blanchard’s is in walking distance to the hotel but, with so many mixed reviews and complaints about the expense for what you get, we decided it wasn’t worth it considering there are so many other delicious options to choose from in Anguilla.

Activities

Definitely rent a car. Cabs are expensive and the island is small enough that you can take in the entirety of Anguilla easily. We rented an open-air jeep and had a blast exploring the island, checking out other beaches and visiting other hotels (we went to Cap Juluca which is super close and Cuisinart, even using its spa one afternoon. Both are nice properties, with views of St. Martin, but their beaches don’t compare to Meads Bay.)

Go to Sicilly Cay – the rum punches are the best and only $5 or so. We took the (free) boat shuttle over, although it’s a good idea to tip the guys operating it. They close around 6 pm so it’s a day trip. We went on a Friday afternoon.

Enjoy some of the services at Cuisinart’s spa – I got a great pedicure and my fiancée really enjoyed his massage.

We also chartered a boat one morning. The chef at Oliver’s recommended a guy named Trevor, who picked us up right in front of the hotel and took us all over…to Little Bay (where we enjoyed a romantic swim) and Prickley Pear. Johnno’s on Prickley Pear makes a mean rum punch and delicious BBQ and snapper for lunch. Our boat excursion, while costly, was a real highlight of our trip so I recommend putting this on your “to-do” list.

As avid travelers (we’ve gone to other islands in the Caribbean, Mexico, Jamaica, etc), we can informatively say that the Anguillan beaches and waters are unmatched in their beauty by any we’ve seen. The food on the island, likewise, is definitely worth the trip.

The Frangipani Beach Resort is lucky to have such a perfect location because the service certainly isn’t doing the hotel any favors.

Hope this review helps and enjoy your trip!

We stayed at the Frangipani during a friend's wedding and I have to say it was not worth the money. We chose a oceanview room for $425/night plus 20% tax, which made it about $500/night. My friends next door at the Sirena were paying less than $200/night and the place was great, except for not being directly on the beach. The room was small, and while there were larger rooms available they did not offer us an upgrade. But the worst part of our stay was the service. The staff for the most part had no interest in making our stay pleasant and they barely had any information about the island to help us. The breakfast was mediocre at best, and if we wanted eggs they charged us $10. I would recommend you stay at the Sirena for way less, or if you want a beach front property, find one where you at least get value for money.

Anguilla is my favorite Caribbean island/beach destination, having also visited St. Lucia, Antigua, Playa del Carmen, and Belize. The Frangipani resort is in a nice location. You can walk down the beach to several nice restaurants and resorts, including the Malliouhana spa resort and Blanchard's restaurant. Other resorts and restaurants are a mile's walk away. The Frangipani is fairly affordable compared to the more luxurious resorts. The beach is beautiful and there are plenty of shaded beach chairs. The bar is a short walk from the beach. The only downsides are that the non-ocean-view rooms are dark and face a somewhat unattractive parking lot; and the service is a bit unenthusiastic. The room we were in featured an open layout, with no door between the bathroom and the bedroom and a fairly skimpy door separating the toilet. The door separating our room to an adjacent suite had its deadbolt installed backwards -- i.e., our neighbors could unlock it without a key. So just a flimsy interior door lock provided "security". I brought this up to the management, but they did nothing about it. The owner of the resort was on the premises for most of the week, but he never asked us about our stay. The food at the resort was good. I'd recommend the resort if none of your first choices are available, but get an ocean-view room.

I just cant say enough great things about the Frangipani and its staff! We recently had our wedding in Anguilla and the Frangipani was our home base and the place where most of our guests stayed and where we held our Rehearsal dinner for 70 people. The accommodations are gorgeous and very spacious! But the service is THE BEST. Staying at the Frangipani, you feel that you have a whole staff of people working just for you and this is something you just dont get at super large hotels.
I arrived at the Frangi about 6 days before my wedding and the airline had lost my luggage. This could have been a real disaster for me but the staff, specifically the manager Ed, personally tracked down my luggage and made sure it got back to me. Each and every staff member is sweet and personable and willing to help with anything you might need. Its wonderful!
The beach is absolutely gorgeous - pure white sand, clear water. The food is delicious and I cant say enough about the helpful staff.
The Frangipani definitely has the feeling of an intimate boutique hotel. It is quite quiet at night and very laid back. If you are looking for a real get-away-from-it-all vacation with a personalized touch and a perfect beach, book the Frangipani!

I went to Frangipani with a couple of friends near the end of February and had an amazing time! I have been all over the Caribbean to Barbados, Dominican Republic, St. Marteen, British Virgin Islands, and Jamaica and I have never seen such breathtaking scenery and such an exquisite resort. I would recommend Frangipani to anyone traveling to Anguilla, It's a chic resort with outstanding rooms and ultra-luxury features like the infinity pool that overlooks the translucent sky blue waters of Anguilla. We stayed in the penthouse which was everything you'd expect and more from a high class resort. The Food is outstanding too! All the staff makes you feel more than welcome and are extremely helpful in helping you plan any activities or excursions around the island. If you are traveling to Anguilla, there is no place finer than Frangipani.

Pros:
1) Beautiful Beach, Sand, Water
2) Rooms Nice at First Glance
3) Owner Seems Like Nice Guy

Cons:
1) Screwed up our booking. Didn't book us for the last day, forcing us
to move rooms at the end (though confirmation confirmed the dates we
had planned.) Tried to charge us $475 more than we had signed for
originally, upon arrival, when we departed, for the "extra day." Of course,
there was no extra day, only the original agreed and confirmed price.
They wouldn't let us leave without paying another almost $100, taxes and
service, for this "extra day."
2) Eight month pregnant wife and husband offered no help with bags upon
arrival. Escorted by reception to third floor (three flights of
stairs), while she watched us struggle with bags.
3) Twice, staff entered the room without knocking. One time was a porter, delivering bags for the wrong room, and the other
was while we were involved in marital relations. Kind of killed the mood...
4) Some serious maintenance problems with the two rooms we stayed in.
One room had a serious, serious leak from the kitchen sink, enough that
the maids knew about it and left several thick beach towels to try to
absorb it. The fancy tile showers were losing tiles, one shower with
enough where you could cut your feet, and the shower head was broken.
Ceilings badly water damaged and not recently painted, some parts falling
apart.
5) Staff not terribly friendly, somewhat standoffish.
6) Breakfast highly mediocre. Cold waffles and okay fruit. Good juice.
Bad coffee.
7) Major construction on both sides of hotel. Awakened very early
several mornings by construction noise. The stay in general was marred by
noise pollution and trouble sleeping.
8) A wedding party came at the end of our stay. They were
understandably celebratory and quite drunk, but kept us up all night as the walls
are thin, and they were slamming doors and screaming until very late.
9) One morning, we awoke to a terrible smell. They were hosing the
entire grounds down in pesticide. We had to run through it to get back to
our room after breakfast, as the guy wouldn't stop spraying.
10) All of the above would be completely tolerable if we felt we were
getting a respectable deal. But for $475 a night (plus an additional 20%
in tax and service), at $570/night total, you expect excellence. In
the end, we left feeling a bit ripped off and quite sure we wouldn't
return. We visited some of the more expensive resorts and wondered if they
might be worth the extra couple hundred dollars a night more.
