“Good beach location & low key”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

We chose the Great House for our accommodations while attending a destination wedding. Given the many choices, we selected it based on it's beach location, more reasonable rates and that it's a fairly short beach walk to the upscale CuisinArt Resort next door -- where you can enjoy some of their dining and spa options. The Great House was more than adequate and you can enjoy a relaxing stay at one of the better beaches on the island. I would most likely choose to stay here again for the reasons stated.

There's nothing fancy about the Anguilla Great House but it is affordable and allows guests the opportunity of viewing a spectacular ocean scene. Some of the minuses; no microwave, internet access is limited depending on what villa you are in. You may need to sit outside on the porch while mosquitoes eat away at your skin or lodge closer to the front office. And the service at the cafe is limited. We arrived for dinner at 7:30PM and the staff told us that they were closing two hours early because things were slow. We would have taken the closing much easier had their been prior notice. Hands down Rendezvous Bay is the best beach with the warmest waters to be at.

Room Tip: If you are looking for luxury or you have a great need to be pampered this is NOT the place for you...

Though I haven't always stayed here in AXA, I always visit and keep in touch with the manager,Will, and the lovely ladies who work in the restaurant/bar (Hi Tina, Chelsea, Serena).
There's nothing fancy about the Great House but it is charming and quaint and on what is probably my favorite beach in the world. The views are spectacular. It doesn't REALLY matter whether you have a garden view or ocean view room, because the room isn't the attraction- the island is- and the beach. One time when I was there I really didn't like my mattress, so they switched it out for one that was more comfortable for me. I asked for a coffee maker, and they got me one. The staff is eager to please, if you just open up and communicate in a respectful manner. The on site restaurant is really good and a great value for a midday meal for those who don't rent a car. But a car is really needed to explore all the beaches, only to conclude at the end of the day that you are staying in the best spot on Anguilla. Yes, you can upgrade to a fancier more expensive place, but you will always go back to Rendezvous Bay, because once you fall in love....
p.s. Mariah Carey was there in the middle of the 2 mi. long beach sitting under a canopy finishing up her work on one of her albums one year while we were there....you never know who you might run into....

Room Tip: If the bed is comfortable, take the room. You won't spend a lot of time in it anyway.

I have stayed at the Great House many times over the past ten years (most recently, in April 2012), and thought it was high time I wrote a review on it. Then I came across Christmas2010's review, and realised he (or she) had said almost all that I wanted to say!
I would only add two things. Firstly, the Great House is NOT a modern, sanitised concrete box of a hotel. If you want to stay in a hotel like that, then stay at the CuisinArt or one of the other newer hotels on Anguilla. But the Great House does have Caribbean atmosphere in abundance, and is in a spectacular location. Secondly, as a regular visitor to Anguilla, I'd say a hire car essential, if you want to be able to sample the wide variety of very good restaurants on the island, as well as the good number of excellent beaches.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in one of the bungalows facing the beach.

My family and I , 2 adults and 2 kids spent a week in this hotel the last April .
Our expectation were not high at all but you are always hoping for the best .
The only positive point is the setting: the beautiful rendezvous bay...the hotel is on the beach with a lot of palm trees around it ! Unfortunately is so round down and the service doesn't exist. The rooms were done in a carribbean style , nice and clean. The kitchen a part from a coffee machine and a fridge didn't have anything else.
The personnel is so unfriendly and not polite at all. The service is very slow . We had an issue with the bill of the restaurant and we are still waiting for an explanation of the manager ..does he/she exist!
We definetevely won't come back to this place. The island has great beaches but that's all!!! You can find a lot of place in the carabbean with beaches like that but also flavour in style and joy to live through the people....!!! If you search for that don't go to Anguilla!!!

The Great House is a single story, bunglalow style motel that is directly on the beach; you leave your room and walk straight to the sand and the gorgeous water of Rendezvous Beach, which in my opinion is the best beach on the island (of many beautiful beaches). You don't have to get in an elevator or walk down several flights of stairs or go through the lobby. If you forget something, you just walk the 50 or so steps back to your room. Easy and casual. The Great House rooms are fine; not the Ritz, but absolutely fine. Room 124 is the second closest room to the water and it has a king bed and a kitchenette (which we didn't use). It is large with an extra single bed in it which we didn't use either. The TV is small but the cable channels are numerous but are you really in the Caribbean to watch TV anyway? Our shower was the biggest shower I have ever been in and the water pressure and temperature were both fine. Occasionally there was an ant or two on the bathroom counter, but so what? The AC worked great, as did everything else in our room. The Great House restaurant is terrific. We ate out a lot during our vacation because we wanted to sample the different menus, but we also ate a lot at the Old Caribe restaurant at Great House and we really could of just eaten there the entire time. The pool is fine too, but I don't think I saw anyone in it as it is just steps from the most fantastic beach ever!

The staff at Great House is incredible. All our requests for extra towels or help getting a taxi or information were answered with smiles and real service.

What the Great House does not have is a fitness facility, a gift shop, a spa or round the clock front desk help. Who cares? If you want a massage, they can get an in-room one arranged for you or you can walk up the beach to the nearby resort. If you want exercise, walk or run the beach. It is gorgeous. There are 24-hour phone numbers to call in case you need something clearly posted in the rooms and frankly I would feel completely comfortable going to the next door room and asking for help.

The Great House is full of people who have been coming here for 10 or 20 years and who wouldn't stay anywhere else. That is it's best recommendation. People come back year after year. They are a large family and you will instantly feel a part of that. The owner, Will, is on-site and available daily. His Dad started the property and they take pride in their accomplishment.

Rendezvous Bay is the best beach on the island, bar none. It is 2 miles of wide soft sand on a bay looking south toward St. Maarten. There are hardly any waves and no seaweed and no rocks, and very few people during the week. So it is quiet and restful and splendid. On weekends, the number of people increase but it is still not crowded. It is the travel poster of Caribbean beaches!! Trust me.

We flew into St. Maarten and took the GB Express shuttle over to Anguilla. It went off without a hitch and I would recommend them. They take care of your luggage and immigration.

We also used Glennis Connor as our driver for the week. He is on-time, helpful, and professional and he will run you a tab for your trip and make you a good deal. I would highly recommend him to get you around the island if you aren't renting a car.

The Great House is the best value on an expensive island.

We recently returned from our fourth week-long stay at Anguilla Great House over the past 10 years. Few places in the world are more relaxing. Cottage-style bungalows (with five units in each single-story building) are spread in a semi-circle around an expanse of grass opening on to a spectacular 1.5 mile crescent of sand and water (Rendezvous Bay). Saint Martin defines the horizon in the background. The rooms are simple but elegant, and guests of each villa share a covered veranda with comfortable lounge chairs. It's a great value on the best beach of the best island in the leeward Caribbean.
