“A jewel for our trio”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Finding a holiday for three can be tricky - Anacaona made it easy. Stayed in a beautiful two storey junior suite in the garden. Clean. Great layout. Useful amenities. Everything was accessible. The mesmerizing beach. The quiet pools. The relaxing hammocks. The friendly staff. The fine dining restaurants down the beach/street. The local grocery store within a 10 minute walk kindly drove us back to the hotel after a local shop. The hotel next door also let us take out a catamaran. Loved the friendly care and interest everywhere in making sure we were enjoying our stay - especially from Watson.

Car rental warning. We organized a soft-top Jeep Wrangler rental which we were told the day of wasn't available but that we could rent a hard top Jeep. Walking to our rental in the parking lot we realized any SUV is considered a Jeep ((I.e. Terios, Suzuki, Toyota).

We loved our experience. A true jewel in the Caribbean if you like to relax, be pampered and enjoy great service amongst a lucky few.

Imagine what a perfect Caribbean hotel would include. I wanted a beautiful beach, a hotel with some local character, attentive but laid back staff, a gentle breeze keeping the bedroom cool and to fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The Anacaona has all this, coupled with a real passion for delivering old fashioned service. The Anacaona may have a couple of rough edges but it is an antidote to the over-priced corporate culture that has a afflicted much of the Caribbean and is a real Gem.

Room Tip: The beach bar Piña Colada's are a must.

Before coming to Anacaona hotel we stayed at Frangipani hotel, located just next door so we could compare them: Anacaona is wonderfull and we preferred it a lot!
Friendly atmosphere, nice staff, kind and helpfull; the room was beautifull, we had an upgrade to a junior suite that was so large, cleaned, confortable and so nice, with a wonderfull seaview on the ocean. We really appreciate it and we felt at home. We recommend it and sure we will come back again!! Even guests were happy, enjoyable without beeing sophisticated! Perfect location!

The hotel and staff are fantastic. The hotel is extremely comfortable, grounds beautiful and the staff friendly and helpful. There are beach chairs right on the beach and a beach bar - all this next to the tight line of chairs at the neighbouring Viceroy. Loved how every afternoon the woman who managed the beach bar brought refreshing almond scented cold face cloths to everyone sitting on the beach, followed by cups of sorbet.

The owners have created an atmosphere that is stylishly understated and extremely comfortable. Anguilla can be very expensive, but stay here and you can experience what makes Anguilla special without compromising your experience.

We returned to Anguilla for our five-year wedding anniversary, and decided to spend a few nights at Anacaona before moving over to the Cuisinart as a treat at the end to celebrate. Anacaona was perfect. Here are my thoughts...

THE ROOM. We had a standard, basic room that was quite clean. It looked out at the courtyard/pool and we could see a sliver of the ocean in the distance. There was a/c, a safe, and a plasma TV. Nice local soaps/toiletry products in the bath. Small balcony with two chairs.

THE FOOD. Breakfast isn't included, but it's moderately priced in their restaurant. I loved the homemade granola and yogurt option each morning. We never stayed onsite for dinner, but did enjoy a quick hotdog at the bar once. Speaking of which, thanks to Oliver - a great bartender!

THE BEACH. Yes, it's a short walk to the beach, but totally not far at all. I've walked farther from hotels on St. John and Virgin Gorda. We've never stayed on Meads Bay before, but I really liked it. It's a lovely beach. On the one day when a rain squall arrived, I dashed over to the beach bar at Viceroy for lunch, then paid to enjoy their fitness center until the sun returned. That's a nice option. The Anacaona also has two pools.

THE LOCATION. If you've never been to Anguilla, you want to be on this end of the island. On our first trip years ago, we stayed at the Arawak - which is on the more remote East end and is not even close to being this nice. From Anacaona, we walked to Straw Hat and Blanchards, which is great. The beach bars of Sandy Ground are a short drive.

THE SERVICE. Everyone we encountered was just lovely. On our final day, they held our bags for the day so we could pick them up after a day at the beach to then go check into Cuisinart.

My only recommendation to the staff would be to invest in perhaps better beds. The one in our standard room was a bit flimsy -- a relatively thin mattress. It was comfortable enough, but could definitely use an upgrade.

In my view, Anacaona is not intended to compete on the same level as Cap Juluca, Cuisinart and Viceroy -- and if you go there with those expectations, I suspect you will be disappointed. Anguilla is not a cheap vacation, so it's wonderful to see a boutique hotel in this tier that can deliver on its advertised promises.

We stayed 5 nights on our first trip to Anguilla. The Anacaona is everything it is advertised to be and more. We stayed in a Jr. Suite. It is two story with a kitchen, living area, and outside deck on the ground floor and master bedroom and bath a short walk up the spiral staircase. Nice view of the ocean from the second floor. Thick landscaping around the unit lends a feeling of privacy. Mead's Bay beach is a 2 minute walk from the unit. Anacaona provides comfortable beach chairs and umbrellas. They also have a little beach bar that will grill tasty ribs, burgers, or chicken on demand. They made pretty good smoothies and served everyone on the beach a little sorbet around 3:30. Anacaona facilitated a great time on the beach.

The hotel and grounds show some age and wear. It is a comfortable place, but could use improvement. We met the new owners at a reception Anacaona threw for guests one night. They seem committed to ongoing improvement of the property. Even with the flaws we found the property to be charming. The staff worked hard to make everyone welcome and to quickly resolve any issues.

The hotel is next door to the Viceroy, an over the top 5 star. We could easily walk over to enjoy their bars and restaurants. Their Sunset lounge is a great place to transition to evening. The Anacaona spa services were pretty limited, but the Viceroy is fantastic.

In addition to the Firefly restaurant at the Anacaona and several places at the Viceroy, we often walked down the beach to the Straw Hat and Blanchards. Both were excellent for dinner. Blanchards has a beach shack that serves good burgers and shakes.

The "walk to the beach" mentioned in some reviews was a total non-issue. It was a pleasant walk and MUCH shorter that what I have seen at many large resorts. I liked that the vegetation provided some seclusion and served as a wind break around the pools. We had a very windy day, but no wind was felt at the pool and nearby hammocks. I liked the feeling of seclusion and separation from the beach.

This was our first trip to the island. I am glad we chose to stay on Mead's Bay. Wonderful beach, spa, and restaurants all within easy walking. We did rent a car and explore the island. ALL beaches are public on Anguilla, but chairs are a premium. On my next trip I will bring my own folding chairs.

Places we enjoyed visiting were Road Bay in Sandy Ground (there are lots of bars and good music there), Gwen's Reggae Bar and Grill (loved the Scratch Band on Sunday afternoons), and the relaxing walk along Cove Bay and Rendezvous Bay.

To make the most of our time we flew into St. Marten on the late AA flight and stayed there at L'Esperance (good price for a 2 bedroom suite). We arranged transport to and from Anguilla on the GB Express shuttle. Cara at GB express arranged cars to meet us at the St. Marten airport and to pick us up from our hotel. GB Express got us to Anguilla by 10:00 AM. Anacaona gave us towels and access to their facilities immediately upon arrival. We were on the beach before 11:00 AM!

We loved Anguilla and we plan to return. The Anacaona helped make our first visit to the island a good one.

Room Tip: Jr. Suite or 2nd Floor in Main Bldg

I spent 3 nights in Anguilla with a gal pal and this hotel claimed it wanted to live up to the high standards of the best hotels. They are succeeding. The rooms are spacious, the amenities are made with local ingredients (and yes, I do mean the soap, shampoo and conditioner). Meals were excellent, prepared by a chef with his own unique specialties like the potato pancakes benedict (a tasty alternative to eggs benedict, with eggs gracing the top of the potato pancakes). There is entertainment a couple of times a week and the night we went we saw a local theatre group while being offered an interesting buffet of local specialties. The staff were friendly, helpful and warm. The location is great since you can go up or down the island from here easily and you never have a long drive.
