“'new' Caribbean luxe”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

The viceroy is a classy operation and this property is exemplary of cool modern LA-style in the Caribbean! The hotel is a modern and well designed property of suites, and villas spread out over two beaches in perfectly manicured gardens. With three pools ( infinity for adults and chilled), a square sun longer pool and a heated kids pool with jacuzzi, plus two beaches to choose from... There is never a shortage of public spaces to sun and relax. The views are gorgeous and the water is warm and turquoise... Absolutely idyllic. Fresh towels almost everywhere, sunscreen dispensers (10 SPF and 30) and umbrellas/lounge chairs aplenty you can always find somewhere to catch the rays. Staff are helpful but not obsequious or fawning, and the choice of restaurants is excellent! There is almost no reason to go 'off property' however...do! The island is unique and amazing for choice of beaches and friendly and unhurried casual hospitality. We found very little attitude or lack of service at any establishment we patronised and generally found Anguilla to be a refreshing change to other Caribbean islands whee the locals are apathetic to hostile towards tourists and visitors. Perhaps because Anguilla is not spoiled yet by hordes of cruise shippers or property speculators! The viceroy is a 'new' property aimed at the monied 35 - 45 hipster urban boho crowd of NY,LA or London.

The room facilities
Cool and modern designs with tasteful furnishings, art and space! Huge bathrooms of marble with terraces and jacuzzi tubs on the balconies. We were in the closest block to the hotel with a view of the Aleta pool. But, all rooms have nice views and the villas are ultra private with pools. There are three businesses going on here... Hotel business, weddings and residence sales ... But at no time did you feel the hotel was overrun with people or management didn't take their eye off the ball! The rooms have great beds, large toiletries, mini fridge kitchens and comfy furniture. Wifi everywhere is free and the room service and housekeeping was excellent and thorough. Baths and showers, ample closet space and storage with wooden hangars!! The details matter!

The food
Excellent! Gluten free and vegetarian options! coba is the formal dining and the fish was excellent, with a great wine cellar! The halibut and Mahi Mahi were our faces and the gluten free pasta excellent!! bamboo cafe was our favourite for lunch with the best staff at the resort by far! The cheeseburgers with sweet potato fries were exceptional as werenthe salads, fish and desserts! Illy coffee too with great smoothies and cocktails very day and evening steps from the azure seas and sugar white sands! The half shell is small, with a Greek-med style menu ( delicious hummus, pita and vine leaves) but be warned.. At mid day in April it is hot!! There is no a/c or fans and if there is no breeze you will sweat! The main cocktail lounge is also a restaurant with fantastic sushi and some unusual dishes which give you a break from big meals and a sense of variety! However.. Do considerbgoingnoffbresort to eat... We loved Smoky's on the beach a bike ride away (free bikes or golf carts at reception), picante Mexican (walk to the endnofbthe driveway and turn right 200 yards!) or try out local restaurants ( Veya, Hibernian - worth the drive or get the pick-upbservicebeyboffer!), Blanchards ( walk 100 yards down the beach) which was our favourite meal on the island by far!, and Flavours. The concierge will be happy to help with tips and advice! Room service was excellent and the hotel will set up dinner for you anywhere on property you want...anywhere! The only disappointment was Aleta for breakfast. Too small and too crowded with an ambivalent staff. It is thebonebthingbthat really let's the resort down and hopefully it will improve! If it isn't included consider going off property for breakfast (giraud's patisserie 2 km away!) or straw hat on the beach!

There are free water sports equipment for guests and tennis, gym activities and yoga every day. A kids club and there is a small and stylish boutique ( with great fashion items and long sleeve swim shirts for snorkelling or boogie boarding...vital!) Orelar & Brown swimwear, sundeck's and ray bans if you need them, and jewels, sarongs, hats and ephemera to keep the ladies interested and the wallets open!

Service
I have to say, the management redeemed themselves by what could have been a very tricky situation! I can only say how professional and helpful they were! The hotel had an 'A' list wedding of 225 guests which took over the hotel, over three days the wedding party took over the hotel and various facilities were closed. One night the Aleta pool became a super-club with lights, dj, balloons and all sorts of things. However, the hotel management really looked after us as practically the only non-wedding guests and offered compensation as well as some special privileges. They offered to move us too which we declined because of the hassle of packing but we appreciated the offer! I will say this... It is an amazing place for a wedding if you can afford it..but if you are staying T the resort and not part of the wedding be careful and ask on check in what will be closed and/or open! That is the only downside to a property that has a wedding business as part of its revenue and business plans.

The hotel is not traditional Caribbean and owes more to LA style, and for some it may be too big and soul-less but we found the modern luxury to be perfect as a winter sun escape with style. Mind you, it is not a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton and does not capture real European luxury however it is a very young and stylish place to stay to enjoy anguilla!

Room Tip: Ocean view suites in main building overlooking Aleta, or Villas near Half Shell are the most private

We just returned home from 7 glorious days/nights at the Viceroy. There were 9 of us total-two families spring breaking together. We have been to many 5 star destinations together (including four seasons, nevis, st regis miami, grand del mar, san diego) and this one tops the list.
First, the travel was easy. Once arriving at the airport-getting to our boat to get us to Anguilla was easy and the taxi driver was waiting for us at the dock to take us to the resort. Upon check in, Richard, the GM was kind enough to personally great us and introduce to us to the wonderful Jamel, who would be our butler for the week. I wish I could bring Jamel home with us and have him part of our family. He was great with our kids, so kind and perfectly attentive, always ready to help us with any need. Jamel took us to our villa (the villas are amazing-the perfect accommodation for two families, with two master suites upstairs and then two great kids bedrooms on the first floor-with a huge living area. And the patio was amazing, with an infinity pool, spa, lounge chairs, table for 6 and a grill.)
The views were unmatched and the sleeping was perfection, between the super comfortable beds and the waves crashing all night, it was the best nights sleep I've ever had at a hotel.
The whole feel of the villa is very high end, yet perfectly beach casual.
Our kids ages range between 6-10 and they all had plenty to do. The resort just built a beautiful new sports facility that our older boys couldn't get enough of. Every day they would go play pick up basketball with other boys vacationing at the resort. We also did a family sports day full of basketball and rock climbing. One day we recruited a bunch of families from the resort and had a parents vs children dodge ball game up at the basketball courts-it was a blast.
The resort also did some great things to accommodate the spring break crowds (btw-the resort was full, yet never felt crowded). They brought in this amazing magician from New York that put on shows at the kids club in the mornings and my kids haven't stopped trying to learn new card tricks since we have returned home. He even entertained the adults at the sunset lounge in the evenings and we were even amazed!
They also brought in Ricardo Vargas, a trainer from California, to run boot camps all week...and we all fancy ourselves as being in shape-including a marathon runner, and wow, he kicked our backends!! I wish I could bring him home with me, too!!!
For the adults, they brought in DJS from new York to entertain the crowds at the sunset lounge at night and it made for a lot of fun nights of dancing in the open air-tons of fun.
We visited Shoal bay one day and that was a great day of adventure, the people at the beach restaurants were fantastically fun, friendly and welcoming. We ate at Madeariman restaurant and Lucy was our server....she was a blast, just so much warmth and friendship!!
We also did a sailing cruise with Capt Rollins on Chocolat and that day was filled with the exploration of a few tiny, beautiful beaches. We ended our cruise with a stop at sandy island-which has its own beach restaurant/bar...and had some cocktails, so much fun-love capt Rollins.
Our kids loved to boogie board and that entertained them almost every day. The boards are complimentary at the hotel.
The hotel also offers complimentary kids club. It is definitely geared to younger kids-Id say best suited for 7/8 and younger. The staff at the kids clubs was great with the kids and our younger girls enjoyed face painting and cookie decorating. They also set up a big movie screen at night and had a great selection of movies for the kids with popcorn and cookies.
The sunset lounge is fantastic. A great selection of sushi, amazing views and super fun at night for the adults when the DJS were playing.
The beaches on Anguilla are second to none. Perfectly white sand matched with turquoise waters.
Overall, the staff is incredibly friendly and willing to serve, the resort is nothing short of eye candy from every view/angle and the activities are endless fun.
There recently have been some snarky reviews re the service at the Viceroy. We spoke to the manager, Richard at the end of our trip re rebooking for next year and I believe he said it best. "This culture is you get back what you give, if you are friendly and kind, the people of this island want to embrace you and you will receive fantastic service" Bottom line is-be a kind hearted person. The resort, the views, everything about this location should put you in a good mood-stop being so crabby.
And yes, to reiterate, we have already rebooked for next year, the first time we have repeated a vacation location...and we are already counting down the days.
Oh, and had a great dinner at Veya-don't miss that place!!

Room Tip: Villas are amazing and worth every penny.

We're glad you enjoyed your spring break stay with us and all our fun spring break activities. You're absolutely right about villas being great for families - and also for a good night's sleep! We let Jamel know that he was a wonderful part of your vacation. We are delighted that you've already re-booked another stay and very much look forward to hosting you once more.

My boyfriend & decided on Anguilla bc I wanted to try somewhere close besides St Barths (an absolute favorite of ours) since we had just gone there 3mo ago. Id always heard great things about Anguilla but now here, I am unsure why. We are both well traveled and enjoy top accommodations however this island & resort left us extremely disappointed.

1. UPON ARRIVAL in Anguilla at the ferry, we didn't feel like we were anywhere special. It was run down, there was no "town" and was very unwelcoming. Also many locals just hanging out and didn't feel like the safest place to be.
2. CAR RENTAL: we tried to find a place to rent a car at the ferry port. Ended up w some random man we were escorted to on the street who had no office and rented us this disgusting jalopy he had laying around. He said he only took cash, didn't even ask for a credit card, & told us to leave the keys under the mat at the airport when we leave. We are 2 days into this trip and I'm wondering what we do if it breaks down on us seeing as we have no way to contact him (and I'm doubtful the hotel wouldn't be of much assistance either).
3. ISLAND itself: driving here is much like driving through a third world country. Again, there is no town or any shops u would be interested in checking out. Everything is dilapidated, and unkept, not one beautiful or charming thing on the entire island except the Viceroys entrance! Also we drove the entire island and there were several areas with a vile stench especially in the Salt Pond region. Lastly, we've encountered several hitchhikers.
4. VICEROY PROPERTY: clean & gorgeous, everything about it.
5. VICEROY ROOMS: beautiful, spacious, comfortable beds, robes, slippers, water at turndown, always plenty of oversized towels, plunge pool was perfect temperature. Only complaints are the patio w the plunge pool could use a light, however I could deal at night. The bigger problem was some of the rooms have a main door that leads into an entryway for 2 separate rooms and whenever the anyone goes in/out both doors echo loudly through that entranceway and it has constantly interrupted our sleep. We did address this w 2staff members who offered us no help and finally a manager but by the time she got back to us we didn't feel like dealing w checking out another room as we were on our way to the beach bc the sun had finally came out. Not to mention didn't want to deal w packing/unpacking again.
6. VICEROY STAFF: friendly but slow, might as well be at an all inclusive in Punta Cana. Don't expect anyone to check on your meal see if u need anything. When they do finally take your orders it seems like the last thing they feel like doing. We had been hoping since it is such a nice hotel and the island has a higher-end clientele that we wouldn't experience so much of the island mentality.. wrong. Expect to often have to ask several times & wait awhile for everything.
7. BEACHES: beautiful, clean and turquoise gorgeous water! Only negative are the ppl trying to sell you trinkets which I didn't expect to have pestering me here. Maybe tmrw someone may ask to braid my hair.. Hotel service at the beach is pretty good. They set up the chairs, towels and give u water & menus. When they decide to come around for ur order just expect slow service.
8. NIGHTLIFE: pretty much nonexistent. The bar is it, but not exactly a party.
9. VICEROY CLIENTELE: a lot of families, children, babies etc. Also a surprisingly great deal of what seems to be other islanders here who Id guess to be from neighboring islands such as St Martin perhaps. I've never been to a resort (even low end) and experienced this at all, never mind so much of it. All I can say is I didn't come here to see men with pants sagged around their thighs or Little Wayne look a likes.
10: VICEROY DINING: food is mediocre-good, but nothing great. Prices are not cheap, which I don't at all mind if the food is good. Breakfast is a pain, if u want an omelet or crepe be prepared to wait 10-20min in line at the buffet.
Bottom line- for the amount of money u will spend to come here GO ELSEWHERE.

We traveled to Viceroy for our honeymoon March 7-13 and were completely blown away by the beauty and friendliness at this resort. I had been looking forward to this vacation for what seems like forever and was all over TripAdvisor in the months leading up. I'm so glad I did my research. A few amazing restaurants within walking distance to Viceroy are Jacala(lunch), Straw Hat(lunch), Blachard's (my favorite lunch of the trip) and Picante (amazing Mexican food)
The service at the Viceroy is top notch. From the moment we arrived, luggage, Sunset lounge, room service, concierge, Adult pool, basketball & tennis courts. 5 star treatment from start to finish. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned the guests at Viceroy all seemed very stuffy. I couldn't agree more! From the sound of all their conversations they were all from the East coast and don't know how to relax!
The only downfall to my trip was actually getting to the island. We took a taxi from airport to the ferry dock thru St. Maarten and same thing back. It was very hectic. Next time I will take a small plane to Anguilla.
Definitely walk along the beach towards Jacala, Straw Hat, & Blanchards. Very romantic! We also rented a car one day thru concierge and drove thru town to a market and stocked up on goodies, Same night drove to Picante(right down the street, 3 minute drive) that night for dinner, yum!
All in all it's the best vacation I've ever been on and can't wait to go back. Unforgettable!

I have actually stayed at the Viceroy for a week for the past three years. Always in the January/February time frame. Prior to the Starwood Property change-over this had to be one of the finest hotels in the world.
At every corner, in every restaurant, floor, gym or pool every single employee would greet the guest with a smile and a "good morning", "good afternoon" or hello. Now they don't bother to make eye contact unless it's The Half Shell or the Coba pool. Both of these locations have two amazing women that have been here every time we have stayed. A lovely greeting and it really brightens up the day!
The staff has definitely been cut back, however this shouldn't be an issue if the staff on hand wants to work and make your stay enjoyable.
They don't.
If management wants to make a noticeable change - your staff should understand that most people just want to feel special. A smile goes a long way, as does eye contact. Make the Viceroy special again and take note. It really doesn't matter how busy you are if guests feel cared for they will leave with a feeling of an amazing experience. All I left with is that you have a beautiful hotel with a property that no employee cares to work at and loathes the guests. It's really a shame. Here are a few of my personal observances from our trip this year.
This past year I witnessed employees drinking left over drinks - really? I thought it was a single incident until I continued to witness this throughout our week long stay. At the Half Shell and the Bamboo Bar and Grill in particular.
Ash trays continued to be dirty, very dirty - I noticed this year because in years past I found it funny that I never saw a dirty ash tray ( I don't smoke but know that several guests do).
It was quite busy this year and while sitting with my husband at the beach near the Bamboo Grill I was witness two waiters chatting with each other rather than take orders. We, along with other guests found it comical that we had to get our own drinks. This after waiting over 1 hour to see if anyone would come by I finally walked to the bar myself ordered drinks and a snack.
This year in particular we found it difficult to order drinks or food while sitting on property whether it be at the lounge areas or the pools. Employees walking by, not making eye contact and continuing on to do "nothing" as observed.
Twice they ran out of plates at breakfast once at Coba another time at Aleta - with employees standing around and no-one noticed. It really wasn't that busy so I am not sure why this happened.
I don't need much, clean room, good service with a smile, an occasional "how are things?". Didn't get one. When we sat at the Half Shell the bartender told us they were having problems keeping good people, we said we noticed. Our beach "guy" couldn't even keep his pants on - I felt like I was in NY the only thing missing was a sideways baseball hat. He was red-eyed and we saw more of his boxers than I would have preferred. While he did provide us with towels and a bucket of ice with water we never saw him again. I mean seriously is this the uniform?
Our one-bedroom suite was beautiful as usual. At $1,300 a night it's always been our favorite splurge. The beds are always comfortable. The linens clean and plentiful. Our first year the coffee machine was clean, refills provided each day complete with coffee, fresh tea and sugars. Last year no coffee machine and this year a cheaper coffee machine, worked well but never re-stocked after the first day - I had to call down every night for more sugar, coffee and tea bags. Not a big deal but frustrating because I know what the hotel USED to be. The mirror in the bathroom was cracked in the corner- it was big mirror so not worth complaining about. The trim was missing from the lower part of our decking. Looks like someone started to make a repair and never finished the job. I noticed this while reading out on the deck one morning. ( I think you can see the "glue" on the trim in the picture I posted of the plunge pool - not planned just happened to be in the picture)
We have stayed at three and four star hotels throughout the Caribbean with better service. It's funny how Starwood has not taken notice of the growing poor reviews of this property. The Viceroy just became part of an upscale "time-share" I wonder if that is why no-one really cares if the service is poor or not. Perhaps the hotel will be filled with guests no matter what. I noticed a few messages from others and thought I would give you another perspective from someone who has stayed here every year for the past three years.
We love to dive and stay in St. Martin, Anguilla and St. Barth's. Friends of ours have joined us and while we like the familiar surroundings of the Viceroy however we may have to look elsewhere due to declining service and no real signs of improvement.
All of these things may seem trivial but we get only a few vacations a year and look forward to them very much. When you pay this price for an experience you expect that you will leave feeling great, not stressed over little things - or big things like extra charges. This year we had two. One was a wrong charge of another guest on our bill the other was a excessive drink charge that we know we didn't run up. We asked to see the itemized bill and the signature - both they could not provide so they removed the charges.
This year we also noted that the concierge was no where to be found - we booked our own restaurant reservations, spa services and even called the car rental place on our own. Not a big deal since we have been there many times before - just would have been nice to have concierge to help.
It's a great property, very modern, great pools, spa is great, food is wonderful, sunset bar is one of the prettiest we have ever seen just don't expect consistent, good, personalized service. If you are one to expect to get what you pay for you might want to consider another property.

Room Tip: All three years we have had different rooms - always a one bedroom suite - large, lovely with great...

Don't get me wrong - this is a stunning resort, design-wise. Very few other properties in the Caribbean come close, save for maybe Amanyara in Turks & Caicos and the like. You know the minute you pull up to a gorgeous driveway and walk through a dramatic entrance to the lobby area. The design and and use of exotic woods and stone is incredible... they clearly spared no expense in construction.

I found the actual location of Viceroy and it's beaches to be mediocre, relative to the other resorts on the island. And while the breakfast area was fairly chaotic every morning, the selection was hearty and overall quite delicious.

Viceroy Anguilla is a stunning resort inside and out, but at the same time it felt too austere (the service was cold and impersonal) and the crowd made it feel even more pretentious (very much the "nouveau-riche" types). I've been to friendlier and warmer-feeling high-end resorts in the Caribbean.

One of our top priorities is ensuring that each guest is made to feel welcome and at home. We hope that you'll experience this personalized service during your next stay.

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon on 3/18-3/26/13 and I must say the Viceroy is a first class resort. Upon checkin, we were immediately upgraded to a studio with a plunge pool as a courtesy by the professional and friendly staff, which let us know that we were going to be treated very well throughout our stay. This assumption was later confirmed by the professional staff at the Sunset lounge when both Maiko and Sherlon went above and beyond expectations to provide exceptional service. In fact, if you do visit the Viceroy, please be sure to stop by Sunset and specifically ask for these two individuals and you won't be disappointed.

The resort as a whole is an incredible experience for those looking for a romantic getaway and I highly recommend it.

Congratulations! We're honored that you chose to spend your honeymoon with us. The Sunset Lounge is one of the most romantic spots in Anguilla - and is the perfect location for relaxing after a leisurely day in the sun. Maiko and Sherlon are two of the many wonderful team members that help provide our guests with an unforgettable experience.
