“Not a bad place”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Yesterday was our first visit in a while, and I honestly cant understand the negative comments on here. People are either very unlucky or have some seriously deluded expectations of a chain pub.

The guy behind the bar, Peter I think, was helpful when we asked for our booked table, and indeed the whole staff were friendly, if a little overworked.

Food was fine - the ham hock and beef rib both cooked well.

Would recommend here to anyone.

“Used to be so good!”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Have been to the POW a number of times over the last few years and it used to be very good with an interesting and varied menu of daily specials. Since becoming a Chef & Brewer its gone down hill and we wont be going back as there are better local pubs that provide great food and good service. This is disappointing as its in a great location and its got great potential but, is under the wrong management to exploit the potential. Yesterday, we were greated by a waitress who immediatley launched into the items that were off the menu, as they had only just been delivered and were "still frozen!" Twice they got the drinks order wrong and brought the wrong wine for one of our friends and my wife's glass of wine tasted off. The remainder of the service and the food was ok but, not great.

“lousy service, good value lunch time”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

I agree with many other comments about the very slow service. We arrived 13.45, for a late lunch, the place was about 2/3rds full. It took 20 minutes from ordering drinks for them to arrive. I'm not talking cocktails, just 2 x glasses of wine and two beers. The 2nd repeat drinks order was the same 20 minute wait, and still no drinks. I sort out the manager and told him his system (or lack of it) was not working. His customer services skills was like the drinks, no where to be seen.

However, the Steak & Ale pie was ok, and the price was very good for a lunch time menu. My advice, is take loads of time with you, and order your drinks at the bar.

“How dare we go there and want to have a meal”
Reviewed December 12, 2012

My friends and I met at this pub last night for a sit down meal. We arrived at 8.15 and it took until 9.15 before we were given our first drink. I would add that we were the only table in the whole pub who were eating so they were not busy. There was one waiter and a manager. The manager was not interested at all - in fact, we had to ask him at least twice for us to get some service. All he said was that our waiter would arrive shortly and then he went back to serving and laughing with the guests (friends) who were up at the bar. Our waiter, although very slow, was pleasant and we felt guilty complaining because he should have been given more guidance by the barman, who was totally uninterested. Needless to say, we didn't leave a tip at all. The food was okay - nothing special but wouldn't complain. Service was non-existant!!!!
