It was very well done for a VN museum. Translations in French, English and VN. A few really cool artifacts and heritage items.

We visited this museum while spending two days at and around Buon Ma Thout. A modern facility with interesting display about tribal life. There is also a display related to the Vietnam war (ended 1975). Overall it worth the two hours we spend here.

Why would an average Vietnamese farmer want to walk around in the Buon Ma Thuot Ethnographic museum? (aka Bảo tàng Đắk Lắk) Because it has plenty of old things from the highland's 31 distinct non-Vietnamese minority groups, has a vintage machine gun & stuffed wildlife. Divided into 3 sections, the original Ethnographic Museum was merged with a Revolutionary museum, a tribute to kicking out foreigners using violence, it makes for an entertaining afternoon.

The VN history section is actually the revamped former Revolutionary Museum, its 75% about war & typically one-sided communist drama, has propaganda posters of smiling peasants & Vietnamese lady-girls with AK-47’s. If you like stuff about French & US military defeats, you will enjoy this Vietnamese smackdown & yes, there’s a machine gun on display for big kids. This section is heavily influenced by the government in its content so take a fairy-tale book along, they have about as much truth as each other.

Educated people might find this section very interesting but for the average fat guy it will probably be boring. The good stuff in the ethnographic area about the 31 tribes in the highlands are the hollowed-out canoe, burial statues of various hill tribes & tribal artefacts of everyday tools like spears & bows. There are some old photos of life in the highlands 100 years ago which are pretty interesting & show a harder people. There’s a weird educational video of some backstreet gang members playing bronze drums. There are pieces of broken pottery, ancient farming tools recovered from the area & some ceramics, nothing worth stealing however.

The third part is about Vietnamese ecology & features wood of various tree species & info on the impacts of deforestation on Vietnamese jungles, it finishes in typical Vietnamese dramatic fashion with an out-of-place display of stuffed jungle animals, some are vicious-looking & will terrify children…brilliant! I was impressed with the building itself as it looks unusual, so you will at least walk in feeling excited.

The museum is located next to the city stadium & the only entrance is via Nguyen Du St. The bus from Lak Lake on Highway 27 passes behind the stadium. The museum doesn’t close for siesta & is open all day long. If you ask nicely you can leave your coat or backpack at the front desk. There is a small café near the front of the museum that serves cocktails & has free Wi-Fi to leech off. Definitely one of the better things to do in this city.
