Owner description: T&R Theakston Ltd is one of the oldest family breweries in Yorkshire and home of the legendary Old Peculier Ale. Visit this historical brewery in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales town of Masham. Experience first hand the craft and skill that goes into brewing our beers, the brewing process is built on almost two centuries of tradition, passed down through five generations of the Theakston family.2013 is a very special year as not only are we celebrating the 186th year of our company's foundation in 1827,but also ten years since we bought the brewery back from Scottish Courage and once again became a family owned independent brewery. Have a pint of our legendary beer in the Brewery Tap - The Black Bull in Paradise, names after the original inn, the Black Bull, where Robert Theakston first brewed our legendary ale and also the site where our brewery stands, once known as Paradise Fields. We always have six differnent Theakston Ales available on tap including our famous Old Peculier served from wooden casks. There is plenty to do and see including the Cooper’s shop where the cooper crafts the wooden barrels – one of the last remaining working cooperages in the country. Leave plenty of time to browse the gift shop full of ‘Peculier’ souvenirs and other Yorkshire delights.

We didn't go on the brewery tour during our week in Masham, instead visiting a couple of times to enjoy an excellent pint (as you'd hope for from the brewery tap!). With the open fire roaring away, the Black Bull in Paradise is perfect for a pint or two after a day on the hills. The staff (and locals) are very friendly and might offer a little sampler to help you decided on which beer to have next.

It does shut around 4.30pm in the winter so you can't drink too much, though maybe that is a good thing if Old Peculiar is your tipple!

Traditional, unspoilt and extremely cosy. The bar and shop inside The Black Bull in Paradise is an absolute must if you are visiting Masham ( Mass-ham not Mash-um by the way!) 6 hand pulled ales to try and other interesting brews. Be warned though, it closes early so get in there mid afternoon to avoid disappointment.

Though poor signage makes the Black Bull in Paradise harder to find than it need be, once there the place is a beer drinkers heaven. The tour was very informative and as technical or social as you wanted to make it. We were in a group of only four so we had all our questions answered by an well informed tour guide. The cost was great value for money and included a pint - or tasting platter. In fact we ended up having two pints for sampling as the guide introduced us to several other beers not on tap in the bar. A very good atmosphere with a tour that lasted an hour and the sampling that lasted as long!! Well worth a visit.

Having taken the Black Sheep Brewery tour last month, we decided to visit the other Theakston Family enterprise! The 2 tours are very different but in their own way enjoyable. The post-tour beer tasting in the “Black Bull In Paradise” was excellent – I particularly liked their “Masham Four & Twenty” and the “Smooth Dark” bitter. Prior to the afternoon tour, we lunched at their flagship hotel / pub “The White Bear Hotel” which is only a short walk away.

An original and historic traditional fully working and functional brewery. You see it how it is with little in the way of commercialism. An excellent bar awaits you at the end and the staff are friendly and keen to please. Beer is excellent. Not a family attraction, more aimed at traditional real ale drinkers.
